Our private cottages enjoy a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean, lush tropical gardening, and enchanting starry nights. Breathtaking Waipio Valley, with its black sand beach, is only seven miles away. Our central location makes the Volcano, Akaka Falls, the Botanical gardens, and snorkeling beaches and all the other sights an easy and beautiful drive away.
A short walk away from our quiet two acres are quaint shops, local style restaurants, historic theater, and an old plantation town where time has stood still.
Our quiet tropical paradise lets you feel as if you are miles from civilization-but you can walk to town for groceries, a pizza, and a movie.

We loved our stay at this cottage. The setting is beautiful and the cottage is lovely. The cottage has everything you need, and is very tastefully decorated. The bed is comfortable, the kitchen is great, and the deck is nice and big with a beautiful view. We only had two nights here and wish we could have stayed longer - it was one of the nicest places we've stayed. Thank you!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car.

Before I discuss anything negative, I need to be clear, the view from the porch is fantastic. Through tropical leaves we watched the sun go down, a cruise ship slid by all lit up, and we read books overlooking the pacific. The cottage itself was in need of some TLC. Plants were growing through the boards on the porch, the floor badly needs to be replaced, and we picked up a 6-legged pirate or two in our luggage. The kitchen was not the 'full kitchen' described, more of a dorm room kitchen really. The location was great, we explored the north Kona shore, the Hamakua coast, and realized later we should have made our Mauna Kea trip from here. Be sure to check out Waimea for good food, and the KTA for groceries.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Tyler, Thanks so much for your input on our cottages. I want you to know we have planned a total re-model for both cottages in November. Yes the foliage needs constant cutting back, especially the passion fruit vine on the deck of the lower cottage. It grows so fast but gives such wonderful fruit, I wish it had been fruiting when you were there. Actually the permit from the county only allows a full size refridg. and a two burner hot plate. There is a Ronco rotisserie oven available but you need to ask Sandy for it. I will have her post a notice so people will know it is available. I am glad you enjoyed the view and location. Hopefully you will return to see the re-model. Aloha, Marsha

We absolutely loved our stay. It was the perfect location to explore the entire north end of the island. The cottage was immaculate, the bed was comfortable, the kitchen was great to prepare simple meals, and the porch was just wonderful. It was hard to leave every day, as we could have relaxed there all day! We loved walking around the little village, it was close enough to Waimea to go in for a nice dinner, and our Jeep afforded us the opportunity to drive into Waipio. We only spent 2 nights, but wished it had been many more. Sandy was very helpful and attentive and the entire experience was wonderful. We wish we could afford to purchase the whole property! Thank you so much for giving us 2 great days of relaxation and exploration. It was fabulous!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We stayed for 10 nights in February/March 2012 and went back for 5 nights in mid-March after very bad weather prevented us from getting to Kauai. I didn't see ANY whales from the balcony, but we did stare endlessly at the beautiful ocean...my only complaint is we had trouble many days getting away to go elsewhere, as the view was too beautiful to leave.... This is not a typical Hawaiian vacation stay: the beaches are a 45 min or more drive west (a list to pick from!) BUT you have so many other choices of things to do: drive through cattle country around Waimea and then into North Kohala along the ridge highway to Hawi (astounding...the road goes above the clouds! i saw 4 rainbows at once); go east to the Hilo area and see the botanical gardens (you won't see that kind of flora on the west side of the Big Island!!....VERY LUSH), or take in some history at the local Hilo museums, get to the volcano in an hour; walk in the nearby state park; take a day trip to Puna (gorgeous trees and east coastline, but a bit too wild west like for us; or drive along the Old Mamalahoa highway remnants between Waimea and Hilo: we kept stopping the car and gawking at truly real/old Hawaii. The road up/down the Waipi'o valley is a short but intense hike (steep), then maybe 10 minute stroll to a beach: no swmming but we did see surfers and whales...so quiet and beautiful. The town of Honaka'a is a lovely small town: locals were SO friendly to us, we felt like we were back home in small town Ontario. We bought lots of grass fed beef at JJ's country market (unfortunately there is no BBQ at the cottage, just a 2 burner thingy) and the grocery store in town is not much more expensive than Waimea; we also took in a movie at the old theatre...... Back to the cottage: it's essentially mostly windows & bamboo blinds on 3 sides and in the morning, the birdsong is wonderful...great foliage surrounds the place: i couldn't wait to roll the blinds up and gawk again, every day. I did not fold out the couch to test it as a bed but it looked like it might be more suitable for kids or others with very spry backs; our bed was very comfortable. In sum, a comfortable cottage for 2 adults and maybe 2 kids in a friendly town which is an excellent base for viewing the valley (we went 4 times), the local area and the north and north/west or north/east coasts generally. probably not suitable for kids due to distance from sea. kitchen set up is a bit awkward due to the 2 burner....Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you so much for the wonderful review. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We used to provide barbecues but our insurance company does not allow them anymore since our decks are wood. However, if you ask Sandy the manager, you can grill on the cement by our home and she will provide the barbecue. We are planning on remodeling this winter so things will be even nicer next time you stay! Aloha, Marsha and Ray, owners, Luana Ola Vacation Cottages

We loved this simple little cottage with the awesome view and nightly serenade from the forest creatures. We used Honokaa as a base to to explore Waipio Valley, Waimea, Hawi, Hilo, and Waikoloa the first week of our Big Island vacation. The town of Honokaa is quaint with choices in dining and shopping. The Simply Natural shop has the best coffee we found during the entire vacation. The hot malasadas at Tex Drive In are sinful-- luckily we didn't find them until the last day. Spend your days exploring and come "home" to your cottage in Honokaa. We did just that and loved it. P.S. If you're in Waimea stop by pizza at Pau.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

My husband and I adore this place! We try to go every year in the summer for a relaxing and romantic vacation. The views are breathtaking, the town itself is very charming, and the owners are very nice and helpful. So much better that staying in an expensive crowded resort. It is very tropical but not too hot or humid and so much nicer than staying in dessert like Kona. About 10 minutes drive from the stunning Waipio Valley black sand beach (it has hiking, horseback riding, atv's and waterfalls!) and about an hour away from both Kona and the Volcano. The decor in the cabins is very cute, like 1950's Hawaii but with a bit more class and are equipped with satellite TV and DVD player. Our Cabin also had fruit trees around it and the property also has coi pond. Staying there always makes me feel like a movie star hiding out from the paparazzi. You can walk to town from the cabin where there is shopping, restaurants (but we prefer to cook in the cabins kitchen), grocery store, gym, yoga studios and even an old movie theater that plays indie films and blockbusters. We just really love the place! It is a hidden jewel and a real Hawaii experience, not some lame Honolulu tourist trap. We highly recommend it!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

About the owner: I am the resident manager (but not the owner) for Luana Ola Cottages, and I have been a resident of Hawaii Island for seven years. I lived several places on the mainland working for large corporations and being married, but now single, I enjoy my life in paradise walking, hiking, the beaches, snorkeling, volunteer work, cultural activities and enjoying my community. I have also served in management capacities with two music festivals on the island. Cleo is my cat, and you may see her around the cottages.
Why the Owner Chose Honokaa:
The owners, Marsha and Ray, bought the cottages, then added the main residence. Their two teenage children lived in the cottages until they were converted to vacation rentals. They moved to Hawaii Island from Napa Valley, CA to live a more family oriented life style with their children.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The ocean views from my two lanis, and meeting so many of the wonderful people who stay with us, return again, and recommend our cottages to friends and family. The town of Honokaa is only a few blocks away, so I rarely drive my car.
