About the owner: Although Joan grew up in Pittsburgh, she has lived her adult life in New England, raising a family in Vermont and moving to Maine in 2006. She has been a vocational counselor, consultant to small non-profits, interim UCC minister on 2 Maine islands and currently hosts retreat guests during the winter months. Joan loves to cook for friends or guests, and also knows how to give them privacy.
Why the Owner Chose Rockland: I love getting lost in the lush, private yard that connects me to nature, yet is only minutes to films, food, music, art, playgrounds and the buzz of a small town. In 5 minutes I hear the sound of the ocean's waves, watch the ferry and sailboats come and go, and sit on the boardwalk for the sunset. Right away, the house felt like home to my adult son and daughter when they visited from Maryland and California; my grandsons (6, 9, 13) quickly found
sidewalks for their scooters, a park 3 blocks away, a beach for collecting sea glass, a walkable library and a home that feels like they had always been coming here.
This is truly a home that has stood the test of time, and welcomes both quiet couples or lively families.
The Unique Benefits at this House: Life in this part of Maine is 'just the right size'. The stresses of a more complex life 'from away' slowly melt. Using Rockland as a hub provides just the right mix of relaxation and adventure. The house itself has a welcoming energy that guests comment on as they walk in the door. The wavy glass in the windows, warm hand-turned woodwork, bevelled glass in the front doors and well-worn 140 year old pine floors give the feeling of being a part of history, when Rockland was a thriving boatbulding and trading city for Boston and New York. A short walk to the Farnsworth Homestead at the Museum takes you back to the Victorian 1870's as this house used to be furnished......while displaying contempory sculpture in the garden and three generations of Wyeths and other American paintings in its galleries. Most of the house windows face south or east to the large yard. Some front north to a quiet street (only four blocks long), that is minutes away from activity of town and peace of the ocean. On this block you will find the 'three sisters', 3 Victorian houses built with the same exterior and a few distinguishing differences. Neighbors are both native to Rockland or have moved here 'from away.'
