Car: Not Necessary

What a blessing to live in our friendly, walkable small town on the water. Remember to slow down and breathe in Maine.

DAY 1, you might walk 3 blks to Atlantic Baking Co, pick up coffee & pastry and walk 4 blks to harbor boardwalk bench or Sandy Beach. Help kids collect sea glass and rock climb. Circle back to Main St and pick up live concert or film tickets at Strand theater and a bag of locally roasted Rock City coffee for morning. After lunch on front porch, retrace your steps 2 blocks to enjoy your favorite paintings at the Wyeth Center Museum or Lighthouse Museum, schedule a massage while the kids do the playground & library, then pick up ferry schedule (passengers, bikes or cars).

DAY 2 Perhaps take ferry to Vinalhaven Lane's Island Preserve and fresh seafood at the Harbor Gawker. Return on last ferry for dinner on Rockland's Main St.

DAY 3 you might have your morning coffee in the back garden, then drive 10 min. to the walkable mile-long Rockland Lighthouse Breakwater, the pounding sea at Owl’s Head Lighthouse,to the top of Camden Hills’ for wild blueberries and head-clearing views over Penobscot Bay, or 10 minutes to Waterman's rustic lobster pound right on the water. While there, have their James Beard award-winning pies!

DAY 4, you could explore picturesque Camden Village 15 minutes away, hoose one of the windjammer cruises, or venture to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, a 2 hour drive.

BY DAY 6, enjoy staying right at home with Rock City coffee, ABC baked goods and the newspaper on your front porch, stroll to Main St for Matinicus Island lobster rolls, or pick up fresh Vinalhaven lobster at Jess' Seafood Market and cook it up here. Give the family the memory of a fire in the backyard with smores for the kids and a good wine for the grownups.

WANT AN ADULT EVENING OUT? Choose from a unique array of walking distance quality restaurants for meals and cocktails, including Cafe Miranda, In Good Company, Fog, Rustica, Suzuki's Sushi, Waterworks, Bricks, Sunfire Mexican....or a 5 minute drive to Primo.

DINNER OUT WITH THE KIDS? Sure, at LHBurger, Rockland Restaurant, Thorndike pizza & ice cream, McD, Dunkin Donuts, Appleby's are options.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2007

About the owner: Although Joan grew up in Pittsburgh, she has lived her adult life in New England, raising a family in Vermont and moving to Maine in 2006. She has been a vocational counselor, consultant to small non-profits, interim UCC minister on 2 Maine islands and currently hosts retreat guests during the winter months. Joan loves to cook for friends or guests, and also knows how to give them privacy.

Why the Owner Chose Rockland:
I love getting lost in the lush, private yard that connects me to nature, yet is only minutes to films, food, music, art, playgrounds and the buzz of a small town. In 5 minutes I hear the sound of the ocean's waves, watch the ferry and sailboats come and go, and sit on the boardwalk for the sunset. Right away, the house felt like home to my adult son and daughter when they visited from Maryland and California; my grandsons (6, 9, 13) quickly found sidewalks for their scooters, a park 3 blocks away, a beach for collecting sea glass, a walkable library and a home that feels like they had always been coming here. This is truly a home that has stood the test of time, and welcomes both quiet couples or lively families.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Life in this part of Maine is 'just the right size'. The stresses of a more complex life 'from away' slowly melt. Using Rockland as a hub provides just the right mix of relaxation and adventure. The house itself has a welcoming energy that guests comment on as they walk in the door. The wavy glass in the windows, warm hand-turned woodwork, bevelled glass in the front doors and well-worn 140 year old pine floors give the feeling of being a part of history, when Rockland was a thriving boatbulding and trading city for Boston and New York. A short walk to the Farnsworth Homestead at the Museum takes you back to the Victorian 1870's as this house used to be furnished......while displaying contempory sculpture in the garden and three generations of Wyeths and other American paintings in its galleries. Most of the house windows face south or east to the large yard. Some front north to a quiet street (only four blocks long), that is minutes away from activity of town and peace of the ocean. On this block you will find the 'three sisters', 3 Victorian houses built with the same exterior and a few distinguishing differences. Neighbors are both native to Rockland or have moved here 'from away.'
