About the owner: We moved from Indianapolis, IN in 2007 in order to live a more sustainable life-style. Drawn to the magnificent Mesa Verde, we purchased the 17 acres of land which literally backs up to the National Park. How could we resist the amazing view of the Mesa and the LaPlata Mountains?
We built our strawbale 600 sq.ft studio/guest house in which we lived with 3 dogs and 1 cat for the 6 months our house...also strawbale and stucco was being built. Living so close to the project, we were actively involved in the entire design and building process. The contractor, crew and we all truly enjoyed the dynamics of creating such a work of art.
Our home, the studio and the land are our spiritual haven. We are grateful to be living in such beauty and history.
Why the Owner Chose Mancos: We were ready to retire and leave our home in the woods northwest of Indianapolis and to live a simpler lifestyle. Friends invited us to explore southwest Colorado and when we discovered a small ad in the Mancos Times for the 17 acres of land, we knew at once we'd found our homesite. The beauty of the mountains, the magic of Mesa Verde, the cobalt blue skies and the rhythm of the west called to us. The spaciousness of the night skies, void of city lights and sounds, the vastness and diversity of the landscape embraces us and fills us with gratitude.
The Unique Benefits at this Studio: It was a gray, windy and cold January day when we first stepped foot on the land. Yet, we intuitively knew that the long drive would curve around the hill up toward the house, that the sun would shine 360 days of the year, that the slope down from the Mesa would be just the place to nestle a strawbale house. As we stood in the wind and faced the snow covered LaPlata Mountains, we knew this would be where our dream was coming true...to live more simply and to become respectful stewards of this sacred part of Mother Earth.
