Kailua house description

After a day of sightseeing or hanging out at the beach, my home welcomes you back with Hawaiian hospitality. Before the evening activities, you might want to take a short nap out back in the hammock, catch up on the latest news on the 47' TV or with the free WiFi, or grill some fresh Hawaiian shish-ka-bobs from Hibachi's on the patio. After dinner in the beautiful dining room, you can go for a leisurely bike ride through this lovely neighborhood. And then catch the beautiful Hawaiian sunset -- it can't be beat. After getting one of best nights of sleep you've had in a long time, thanks to some of the most comfortable linens available and awesome mattresses, you get the tough decision of what to do today... Catching the sunrise? Snorkeling? Surfing? Checking out the sea turtles? The list goes on & on.

The house has 2 private bedrooms with closet storage. There is also a queen bed situated off to the side of the great room, and the leather sofa is also a queen size bed. There is a Graco Pack' n Play for your baby.

For your entertainment, the house has WiFi, a 47' flat screen TV with 70 channels with DVD player, boogie boards, a surf board, snorkeling equipment, 3 bikes, etc.

                              • Kailua is the quintessential beach town and is known for its world famous beach and quaint feel. I fell in love with this area at age 6 and it has never left my memory and heart at 56. Honestly, it is the sweetest place on earth! This beautiful Kailua sanctuary for your family and friends is a 1200 sq ft home completely surrounded by 20 royal and 3 coconut palms with a hammock to enjoy the constant ocean breeze. There are two very cute bedrooms with queen size beds and an additional queen bed and a couch that converts to a queen. You could sleep 8 if you really love all of them, but 6 is very comfortable. There is a fully equipped kitchen with a bar and a beautiful dining room. If you enjoy outdoor cooking, there is a gas bar-b-que, two outdoor dining tables and patio seating (you can get some amazing Hawaiian shish kabobs and poke from Hibachi's in Kailua). There is also a washer/dryer, 47' flat screen, boogie boards, a surf board and snorkeling equipment. To get around, there are two folder bicycles and one Electra beach cruiser and a place to park your rental car. The house is about 3/4 mile from beach access 89A (shown in the photo) and a very easy 5 minute bike ride or 15 minute walk on Duck Lane (not the official name, but there are lots of ducks on this beautiful boulevard). The house is 25 minutes from the airport and has great access to the famous North Shore and if you want to try kite boarding or some great sea kayaking, Kailua Beach Park is the perfect spot. There are lots of sea turtles, too!...moreless

Mari and Don were fantastic hosts answering all my questions immediately and dealing quickly with any concerns that arose. The house is a 5 minute drive from an amazing and uncrowded beach, though get there before 11 on weekends to get parking. Kailua is a great town to get around, lots of places to eat, and get supplies, yet we were only 30 minutes away from Honolulu.

We much preferred staying in Kailua to Honolulu where our meetings were taking place. The rest of the family much enjoyed the beautiful nearby beach (and playground!), the wonderful house with garden and plenty of space, and the responsive hosts. Thanks much, we had a great time and can recommend this property to anyone!

We recently stayed in this nice home in Kailua. It was a great spot for our family. The great room was a nice place to relax and play games in the evening and had plenty of space for our 5 people. We enjoyed the kitchen which had everything we could need. We took walks to see the sunrise on the beach and loved this location in Kailua. We spent lots of time on the beach in Kailua along with hiking the pill box trail. Loved the Kailua community with the farmers market. Great place and highly recommend.

Owner response: We love the Pill Box Trail. It is so interesting to see the remnants of the WWII defenses. We also recommend, that is you or your children have not seen the Pearl Harbor Memorial, it is a must see. Pearl Harbor is very easy to get to from our home. The experience is very moving as the National Park Service and the Navy do a great job in explaining the attack, what lead to it, and what a monumental task was ahead for the United States. As you stare down into the twisted hulk of the USS Arizona and watch the fuel oil bubbles from her still leaking tanks rise to the surface, you realize they were the greatest generation. Go early and allow a full day. There is much to see and absorb and contemplate. My 7-year old was fascinated with it and she still asks questions. Thank you for your kind comments. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Don and Maristela

Thank you Don & Mari! We absolutely loved your home! We really enjoyed Kailua and didn't want to leave. We tried out a lot of the restaurants you suggested and weren't disappointed. Kailua beach is beautiful, so we spent a lot of time there. Our Grandson loved playing with the geckos and we really enjoyed the hammock in the backyard. Would definitely come back!

(It was the first open time in the house schedule in a very long time.) We were here upgrading a few things - new washer/dryer, window treatments, etc. We love it here too. Mari loves to walk that beautiful beach. It is four miles of white soft sand. I love to snorkel, especially to Flat Island. I am glad your grandson loved the geckos. My daughter loves playing with them too. They do not forget those things. Mari and Don

My husband and I took our four kids (8,11,15, and 18) to Hawaii and knew we didn't want to stay in a hotel during our vacation. We also knew that we were going to be driving a lot, and did not want the hassle of crowds, valet parking, and elevators found in downtown Waikiki. We are so glad that we found this house! It was perfect for us! There were bedrooms, beds, a washer and dryer, a fully stocked kitchen (for the nights we stayed in to cook), and sand toys and boogie boards for our many quick trips to the beach in Kailua! We took Don up on many of the recommendations that he offered for places to shop and eat, and they were always great! (Besides the muffins- the Kalapawai Market has great breakfast burritos and wonderful coffee!) The house was functional and private, and we enjoyed our drives to all of our events, the longest drive was to Waianae to go dolphin/whale watching, but it was no big deal. Although I had to wait 42 years to get to Hawaii, there's no way I will wait that long again...my husband is already recruiting a couple of friends to go back with us, and we would love to stay at Don and Mari's house again!

Owner response: Kate, Thank you for your kind comments. We so enjoyed having you as a guest. I know exactly how you feel about Hawaii. Once it is in your blood, you can never forget it. For me, every time that aircraft door opens and the waft of the ocean air comes into the cabin, it literally brings tears to my eyes. Hawaii is unique - there is NOWHERE else like it. We really look forward to seeing you again. Aloha, Don

The spacious, well equipped dining room, kitchen, and living room were perfect for our family holiday. Lovely large dining room table, excellent kitchen with new refrigerator, great cooking equipment with spices and other supplies available. Good grill. Bedrooms have good beds, big closets, shelves but no dressers. Lots of windows and natural light. House is close to beaches and town with Whole Foods and Foodland and many good shops. Car necessary. Some traffic noise during rush hour. Owner responds immediately to questions or concerns, gives excellent information about area. Kailua beaches are awesome. Explore them all. Listing and photos were accurate. Property was clean, yard well maintained. We really enjoyed our stay.

Owner response: Anne, We are so glad you had a great holiday in Kailua. Actually, I am a wood worker and am building some dressers from zebra wood. I hope to have them completed soon. We are also adding two additional bikes to the house, so there will be four bikes. (A new blue Electra beach cruiser was just added.) We are also doubling the size of the video library. We hope to see you again next Christmas. Mahalo, Don and Maristela

Uncle Don, thank you so much for letting L. & I use your beach house! We had a wonderful time. There is no way our honeymoon would have been even close to as amazing without the house in that great town. You were totally right about the 4th of July. The parade was spectacular, the air show was awesome, and the fireworks topped it off. You created the perfect honeymoon for us, in the perfect place. We met several locals who were so friendly & welcoming. Thanks again for an amazing trip.-T

Having never used VRBO, I was hesitant and then pleasingly surprised. Unit was in condition as described and ideally located for all that we wanted to see, North Shore, Pearl Harbor, PCC/Laie, and downtown Honolulu. We'll-stocked kitchen and interior spaces large with lots of seating. Really no time for TV, though it was nice and lots of DVDs. Actually the one bathroom worked out fine, especially with 6 adults and one toddler. Overall great experience and would definitely rent same place again.

Owner response: Luana and Family, We are so happy you had such a good time. We know when we are there it is so nice to come home after a big day around Oahu and see the quiet retreat of this little house in the palms. We usually don't last too long before sleep calls to get ready for the next day. Thank you, again - Mahalo! Don and Maristela

We had a great experience staying here with our 2 preteen kids. The conveniences were the best part, just minutes to the beautiful Kailua beach by car, a couple of bikes, snorkel gear, boogie boards, towels, kitchen appliances etc... it made it easy to relax and have fun. Whole foods was nearby as well as shops and other quick eateries. Easy highway access and rentals for kayaks and paddle boards. It is on a busy street but tucked away in the back. Would highly recommend for an active family!

About the owner: I am Don. I spent the early years of my childhood on Bellows Beach, just around the corner from Kailua. I love it here. One unexpected benefit of sharing our home is we are so excited about Kailua and Hawaii, in general that we love for others to experience this wonderful place. Our guests have told us how sad they are to leave. We remind them that the Islands will be here for them when they return. Mari is from Rio de Janeiro and grew up on Ipanema Beach. (She is my 'Girl from Ipanema.') She was skeptical that anything could compare with Rio. The moment she stepped through the beach access onto Kailua Beach she said she knew that this is where she wanted to spend the rest of her life. It blew Ipanema Beach away. We both love the water and out of doors. Mari is a dance instructor and helps our guests with what they need to have a memorable Hawaii experience. We live in Phoenix, full time due to other life commitments. Our plan is to one day, live in Kailua, Hawaii full time.

                              Why the Owner Chose Kailua:
Kailua has the best location in all of the Islands. It has all of the charm of a small beach town with easy access to Honolulu. I picked this house for my own retreat. I looked at many. It had the right balance of seclusion, beach access, compactness and efficiency, airport proximity, and charm. It made it possible for us to leave on the 8AM Hawaiian Airlines flight and be on the beach by 1. Where else can you do that? We have outfitted this house with 'the best.' The bedding is all Martha Stewart 600 thread count, the kitchen pots, pans and utensils are all Williams and Sonoma first quality. In July, we will be hanging a very large (7'x5.5') original oil by Pat Bailey on the dining room wall. If you stay with us before then and wonder about the 3 spot lights on the wall, they are for this art we want you to enjoy. We have tried to ensure most of what you need to have fun is provided - boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, bikes and surfboard.
