Our home is an 18th century dwelling that was restored and enhanced by noted Tuscan preservationist and architect Stefano Lazzarini. It has been featured in numerous magazines including 'Piscine' and 'Case di Campagna.'
Highlights: - Sleeps 6 very comfortably - 65 foot swimming pool - All modern fixtures and facilities - Private, gated location - High quality linens and towels - Free WiFi Internet - Maid service included - Close to beaches, mountains, Lucca - Meticulously maintained
Amenities include a 65 foot swimming pool with teak furniture and a large, adjustable umbrella, meticulously tended gardens, a full modern kitchen and modern, well-appointed bathrooms. All linens are 100% high thread count cotton, and high quality towels and beach towels are provided.
The house sits on 4 enclosed acres of terraced olive groves and gardens; there is a locking gate for privacy. It is located just 6 miles from the beaches of Viareggio, 25 miles from Pisa airport, and 25 miles from the walled city of Lucca, with its vestiges of ancient Rome and the Renaissance.
We are a five minute walk from the village of Bargecchia, where there is a café/bar that serves pastry and ice cream, a small hotel/restaurant, a full-service butcher, a fruit/vegetable store, a small grocery, and an excellent pizza restaurant.
The house sleeps six with plenty of room to spread out. In certain cases we may allow additional guests for an additional fee; please contact us for details. In our view it is perfect for 3 couples or a family of up to six people.
There are four bedrooms, each of which can be set up with a single king-sized bed or two twin beds. All bedrooms are upstairs; there is a master bedroom with its own private full bathroom, and three other bedrooms which share a full bathroom.
Downstairs, there is a third 3/4 bathroom (shower; no tub) a large living room, a comfortable library, a dining room, and full eat-in kitchen with pantry. During the warmer months, we generally dine outside. The house has two porticos, one of which houses a large marble dining table which seats eight, and another which has more casual seating and is a great spot to shelter from the sun. There is a charcoal grill available for use should you wish.
Two hours per day of housekeeping is included in the rental fee; our housekeeper, who has been with us for more than twenty years, is also available to cook, babysit, and do additional personal laundry for a small hourly fee.
In addition to our housekeeper, Mila, we also employ a house manager who lives in the village minutes away. She is fluent in both Italian, her native language, and English, and is available to help with any needs that arise—from arranging a physician to handle any medical issues to simply making restaurant reservations or helping with the logistics of your stay.
Our guests have included art historians who wish to visit the well known sculptural center of Pietrasanta, aficionados of Italian food and wine who visit to explore vineyards and take classes at the world-class cooking school located just 5 miles from the house (www.toscanasaporita.com), avid walkers who like to explore the back roads and hiking trails of the Apuane Alps, families with children and grandchildren who enjoy the pool and privacy, and other individuals from all over the world who enjoy shopping, fine dining (and country cooking!), distinctive local wines, and beautiful beaches just 15 minutes away.
There are scores of beaches to choose from up and down the coast, the so-called Riviera della Versilia, where you pay a daily, weekly, or monthly rate in exchange for dressing cabins, showers, umbrellas, etc. Some have snackbars. The fanciest are located in Forte dei Marmi and Marina di Pietrasanta, about a 25-minute drive from the house. We often choose Bagno Nettuno in Viareggio, a family-owned establishment with a pool, games/sports for children, and an excellent menu.
Hiking and country walking routes begin just out our door; from flat and rolling terrain to high mountains, there are options to accommodate your fitness and preference.
In Viareggio and along the coast, seafood is the main specialty. In the countryside and mountains, wood grilled meats and home-cured salamis and hams feature prominently. Some delicious tradtional dishes are: zuppa di farro (a white bean and grain soup served with a drizzle of olive oil), rosticciana (wood-grilled pork ribs rubbed with herbs and pepper), and panzanelle (served as an antipasto along with salami and cured meats, this savory fried dough is decadent but delicious!).
There is a also a great variety of pasta and risotto dishes to delight you. Much of the inventiveness of Italian food, however, is found in the antipastos, particularly, in our area, those comprised of seafood (antipasto di mare).
Fresh, local ingredients are available to cook for yourself, or you may enlist our housekeeper, who is an excellent cook, for a small additional fee. We also provide a detailed list of preferred restaurants with contact information, hours, and directions to our guests. It's also our pleasure to offer you our own olive oil from the yearly harvest on our property for use during your stay.
For entertainment, our home is equipped a 40 inch Sony Bravia television with satellite which, in addition to the full gamut of Italian programming, also carries the BBC, CNN, CNBC, Fox, and other English content. We maintain a collection of more than 300 movies on DVD, mainly classics from all eras of film, and more than 35 complete operas on CD. For guests who wish to stay 'connected' during their stay, we have free wireless high-speed Internet. In addition, most cell phones receive an excellent signal at the house, making it easy to stay in touch with work, friends and family.
Our family enjoys spending time here throughout the year; while summer is the 'high season,' fall, winter and spring can be equally charming, and slower paced.
Finally, we are happy to offer returning renters a 10% discount as appreciation for their loyalty!

Our home is located in a small village conveniently located six miles inland from the beaches of Viareggio, 24 miles from Pisa airport, and 25 miles from the walled city of Lucca. Our village features several dining options, as well as a bar/cafe, butcher, fruit and vegetable shop, and grocery store.
The location is a great springboard from which to explore Pietrasanta (8 miles), Lucca (25 miles), Pisa (25 miles), Florence (65 miles), and the Cinque Terre (70 miles to the mid-point of Vernazza, which takes 1.5 hours).
There is a world-class cooking school nearby, and an infinite number of country walks and hikes just out the door. The home features a 65 foot swimming pool and outdoor leisure/dining areas.
About the owner: We have been renting our home for the last 15 years, relying primarily on word of mouth and referrals from friends and family. We enjoy many return visitors who continue to make their own memories here, and we offer a 10% discount to returning guests.
Why the Owner Chose Lucca: This part of Tuscany, while not as heavily marketed as the areas further south, offers an incredible experience to the sophisticated traveler. The weather is more temperate than you might imagine in the summer, owing to our hilltop location and proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. While July and August still see very hot days, the evenings are generally very comfortable and breezy.
The larger towns closest to us—Pietrasanta and Camaiore—both offer a great deal of history, art, and shopping just minutes from the house. There is an annual Puccini festival each summer close by which is not to be missed.
Lucca, which is much larger than either of the aforementioned towns, is encircled by a medieval wall and features winding streets, beautiful churches, endless gastronomic possibilities and some fine art and music options.
Slightly further afield, both Florence 60 minutes to the southeast and the Cinque Terre 75 minutes to the northwest are popular day trips with our guests.
Our location enables easy access to two major autostradas, the entry points to which are just a 15 minute drive. Viareggio offers convenient train service for travelers.
The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House: We take a great deal of pride in the upkeep and care of our home, and we only ask that our guests do the same and treat our home as they would their own. The gardens, pool and living spaces are here for you to enjoy and relax. Our house manager can help iron out any details to make your stay more comfortable. And our housekeeper Mila's home-cooked meals are not to be missed!
