Two people and two dogs stayed very happily and comfortably here. There is plenty of space for families as well. All instructions were well thought out, easy to follow, and convenient. The property is perfect for dogs to relax outside without worry. The three main bedrooms are spacious and private. Main floor is great for entertaining with movies, pool, or the big dining table. Stove and fireplace were easy to use, and the wood was well stocked for guests. The first fire was all set up before we arrived...just had to light a match! I plan on staying here again with more guests. Nice artwork throughout the house of desert landscapes. No complaints at all. We even saw a Roadrunner in the front yard on our first day.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We're so happy it was a pleasant experience. Thank you for the comments on the artwork too. We look forward to your coming back with your friends. Thanks again!

We thought we would try vacationing in a rural Arizona setting and found the rain house to use for our 10 night stay. We discovered the wonderful wineries in the area and highly recommend touring them. We also visited Kartchner caverns which is a MUST DO! However, we found we were not cut out for rural life - too far from grocery store/restuarants/other. And we did not realize the house was not centrally heated but had a wood burning stove and several electric heaters. We had some cold weather during our stay, 2 inches of snow, so we had a bit of a learning curve trying to figure out how much wood was needed and where to place the electric heaters. Karen was helpful in coaching us how to warm the house, brought out reclining lawn chairs to enjoy on the sunny days and encouraged us to let her know if we needed anything. The only downside to our stay was the kitchen. We are used to cooking in and found the sink, dishwasher and oven to be challenging. The dishwasher is a small countertop unit and the 3 part commerical sink is bar sized - so neither were conducive to washing lots of dishes and cookware. We ended up buying paper plates, bowls and cups. We paralled this stay to renting a cabin, nice but more rustic than anticipated. On the plus side was the very good internet service and wide variety of Direct TV channels, a large selection of DVD's, novels and non-fiction and a nice walled yard for our dog.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, pet owners, sightseeing.
Owner response: We have now installed a brand new Bosch dishwasher, so even though it's not as energy-efficient as the old counter-top, it is much more convenient and holds more. We try to keep our rates lower than all the other VRBO homes in Sonoita, Patagonia and Elgin and hope that the amenities offered outweigh any inconveniences.

We enjoyed the house and were quite pleased with the solitude afterall if you were expecting 5 star accomadations and dining available you should go to a CITY...we too had chilly weather but being we are from the north we found it a joy that there was wood ready and available and WE didn't have to go cut it. The house has it's quirks and yes the kitchen made me think I was back bartending in a country bar...but really I just hand washed dishes no reason to go buy paper..afterall there was water and soap. The house has some quirks and once one gets on to them they just add to the adventure..loved waking up to the desert and Karens birds including a lovely bossy cardinal. We had bought a chiminea and unpacked it building fires each night and listening to the desert come alive. The only problem we had was a very barking dog next door which Karen called the neighbors and they kept him in and he was no longer a problem all in all a grand adventure. Thanks KarenRecommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: We're glad you found the property overall enjoyable and thank you for your stay. We are planning to put in a real dishwasher this summer instead of the counter-top one and are gradually working the other quirks out as time allows. Yes, I agree - if someone wants sleek, modern and totally un-quirky, then staying in town is a better bet. Hope you have the opportunity to come out again!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Rain Valley House. The house was comfortable and very well appointed. We particularly liked the fact that the house was so very pet friendly. Our dogs were able to enjoy their stay as well. We would love to visit your beautiful state again and would not hesitate to return to the Rain Valley House. Thanks for your hospitality Karen! You really do think of everything.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We're happy that you enjoyed the property and that your dogs were also pleased. Pets seem to get pretty comfortable there in a hurry - if they could only write reviews! We look forward to having you stay again sometime. Thanks! Karen

This rental home had plenty of room for 3 couples and a baby. Our hunting trip was based in Patagonia, so it was about 30 minutes away, but having a large enough space for 6 people was very important and this house definitely had that. The two fireplaces help keep the house warm and the chimney of one of them runs up through the master bedroom upstairs keeping it toasty up there as well. The Internet worked beautifully which was important for me as I had to do some work even though I was "on vacation." We did not have a chance to visit the wineries in the area of Elgin, but it would have been a short drive to go check them out. Definitely had a nice vacation here!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you so much for staying at the house. We're very glad it was a nice getaway for the whole family. We just upgraded the internet this week so it should work even better next time. Wishing you happy travels wherever you go next. All the best to you and your family, Karen Howard

Very unique property with creative design features. The house is in great condition and included everything we needed We rented the house primarily for the night skies and they were incredible , we had our telescopes out each night. We also enjoyed the local wineries , Tombstone, Tubac, and shopped a few art galleries. My wife and I plan to make an annual pilgrimage to this area. Thanks Karen !Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our family--adult kids, grandkids (ages 2 and 4), gramma, grampa, border collie, and tiny little dog ALL enjoyed the home. The kids kept busy the first couple of hours just exploring all the nooks and crannies. We cooked a couple of wonderful meals to share with friends/family and the home provided a wonderfully convivial gathering place. We would/will rent it again in a heartbeat. I would recommend it for a single person, couples, families with small children, pet owners, women's retreat....just about any type of gathering. The owner was super helpful. Thanks so much for making our first family vacation with grandchildren super and unforgettable!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We spent a wonderful Thanksgiving at Karen's eclectic, peaceful home outside Sonoita. I echo the other reviewer's comments, but also wanted to add that this is the most dog-friendly rental we have stayed in. The enclosed, very large yard was great fun for our dogs, and worry-free for us. For those traveling with dogs, I would highly recommend this rental.Recommended for: Pet owners

We just returned from a week at the Rain Valley House. It was wonderful. The home is very spacious with very thoughtful touches everywhere. We enjoyed the quiet solitude and are looking forward to going back during peak birding season. My husband brought his celestial scope and the stars were magnificent. Views were amazing from every vista. Bed was very comfortable, lots of linens, kitchen set up to cook in and basic supplies present. There was tons of room and it seems even six could fit very comfortably (we were only 2). Karen was also very gracious to let us apply our deposit to this trip after we had to cancel last spring due to a family emergency. We will definitely be back!.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We have stayed here 4 times this past year & each time has been great. The listing description is accurate and the pictures show everything clearly. It's just a great place, which is why we will make reservations to stay there again. The owner is so helpful & makes all the planning & visit very easy for us. It's always very clean & there are nice extra touches everywhere. We enjoyed just hanging out at the house as it's so peaceful there and also exploring the wonderful wineries nearby & beautiful scenery all around. Our dog loved it there too! Highly recommend!Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our pups were so glad we brought them back to the Rain Valley house this spring. This is the perfect place for a relaxing time for all family members! I love every room of this home and sitting out in the yard with a good book. The fence surrounding the property keeps even our tiny Yorkie safe on his explorations. We also love to explore the surrounding area. Wine country, Coronado National Forest, birding, photography, the possibilities are endless.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This year was our 4th stay at the Rain Valley House. You couldn't find a more perfect location. A beautiful, unique home and property even better then described. Peaceful and quiet and centrally located in Southwest Az to many beautiful sites. Or, as we like to do, enjoy our morning coffee in the so private walled yard. A perfect place for our 4 legged family members as well. They also could relax and be perfectly at home. Karen is the best hostess! Thank you for sharing your wonderful home. Can't wait until we can visit again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Thanks so much for opening your house to me. I loved it here - the location, privacy, views & the unique architecture of the house. The dogs were in doggie heaven - they had never had such a large space to run free in before & took full advantage of it. I definitely hope to come back again. Maybe next time I will actually leave the property & do the sight-seeing I'd originally planned to do!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

We have stayed at Rain Valley House twice and are planning on a third time and more. The owners are so helpful and friendly, the house is quirky - in a good way - and our two dogs just love the safe yard. The stars at night are glorious, plus strolling around the yard watching the sun come up with a cup of java in your hand is the perfect way to start your Arizona day. As much as we hate to spread the word about this special place, we have to state that it is one of our favorite spots for our winter vacation!! Thank you Karen and Jim!!!
