In The Fall
If you want to see beautiful New England leaf color in October, then Mt. Desert Island, and the Acadia National Park in Maine, is the place to do so. While most think of Bar Harbor, on the island as the place to visit with its shops and tourist atmosphere, the real treat is to visit the other small communities, like Northeast Harbor, Somes Harbor, and Southwest Harbor to experience the flavor of Mt. Desert Island life. We had a wonderful experience staying at the home of William S. Patten, which is a short distance off Highway 102 between Somes Harbor and Southwest Harbor near the old Hall’s granite quarry. The home has a perfect view of Somes Sound, and the forest of Acadia National Park and Mt. Cadillac beyond. The home is a non-traditional 3-level Asian exterior design with open beam ceilings on both the interior second entry level, and the master suite above, with full views of Somes Sound. The property extends down a pathway to a boat dock with its own canoe on the Sound, and then up from the house, via a steep-hike pathway to a picnic area and fire pit with an even more stunning view of Somes Sound, Acadia National Park, and almost to Mt. Cadillac in the distance. As we learned from Bill Patten, and the local Granite Museum, the home site was originally mined for huge slabs of granite cut from the hillside and loaded directly to sailing ships a hundred years ago. Because of the depth of Somes Sound, there was sufficient draft for the ships to pull along shore and load granite directly from the hillside to the sailing ships. The home is spacious with great views but confined enough that it maintains a quiet cozy feeling throughout, on each of its 3 levels. The modern open kitchen is excellent for cooking meals for 4- 6 persons while entertaining the guests. We felt the Patten home was the perfect ‘home base’ for a week of leaf viewing and unhurried entertainment. There was a great deal to see and do, but then we could return to the refuge of the Patten home and be in complete privacy with a view of the ocean’s inlet and Acadia Park-- as if we were the only people on the island.

Great House - Excellent Location
Great House - Excellent Location
My family just returned from spening 4 weeks at Acadia Lodge. The house is very nice and in an excellent and private location. We enjoyed being on Somes Sound and seeing the sail boats and lobster boats out the windows every morning and the kids had fun fishing and launching kayaks right from the private dock. The house itself has all of the amenities necessary for a long stay and is very comfortable. Finally, the location is great for accessing all that the island and Acadia National Park have to offer. Nothing is more than a few minute drive away!

About the owner: Summer resident of MDI for over half a century, author and retired newspaper publisher in midcoast area, raised three children in midcoast Maine, I enjoy sharing unique experiences and memories. My wife, who is a musician and composer, and I live part-time in South of France, but we have enjoyed the last three winters in the beauty and comfort of Acadia Lodge.
Why the Owner Chose Hall Quarry:
Somes Sound is a legendary sailing area both for the racing sailboats I grew up on and as a source of inspiration for some of my wife's recent compositions. We enjoy hiking on the National Park mountains that surround it. Hall Quarry where the house is located on the western side was once a granite quarrying village. From the top of Acadia Mountain one can hike along the park trails south over St. Sauveur and Flying Mountains past Valley Cove to an encampment where Native Americans used to settle for the summer and the Jesuits built and chapel in the 17th century. We collect mussels from the rocks at low tide, kayak along the edge of the Sound, sail out from there to have lunch on neighboring islands or take the outboard to the Claremont Hotel to have drinks and dinner.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The home is located down a half mile private drive on the 'quiet side' of Mount Desert Island but only two minutes from lovely Echo Lake (where my wife swims each morning with a group of women friends) and ten minutes from the thriving town of Southwest Harbor. This village offers excellent restaurants and stores, and a golf course and tennis courts. But it avoids the crowds in Bar Harbor which can still be reached in twenty minutes. Acadia Lodge combines privacy, a unique scenic location on the water, and easy access to the rest of the island.
