Red River studio description
Riverview Cabin is a studio apartment. It offers a quiet retreat where nature sings her seductive song like the babbling Red River accompanied by gentle wind through the pines as you step outside your screened door to relax on the deck. Riverview Cabin has a small refrigerator, toaster, microwave and coffee maker for your convenience. The large bathroom features a shower big enough for two. Down the driveway you have access to the deck on the main house and of course the Red River where you can cook that just caught brown trout on the stone fire-pit or make smores which is a treat for all ages. A flat screen TV is watched from the queen bed or enjoy reading by the light above the bed.
The town is just 4.7 miles away where a grocery store carries everything you could possibly need to make your vaction complete. Red River has some great restaurants too.
Wildlife you will see are goldened mantled ground squirrels, elk, deer, grouse, a melange of beautiful birds, including the blue steller's jay, dark eyed junco, and hummingbirds galore. Black bear have been seen on our property so please bring in food after dark especially the hummingbird feeder we make available to hang outside your door.
As a bonus, Riverview Cabin has an RV pad just steps away with water, sewer and standard 20A electric outlet available.

The Carson National Forest surrounds the Upper Valley and affords world-class hiking. One of our favorite hikes is found by driving to the end of Hwy 578 then on the forest road to the right is the trail-head to Middlefork Lake. Middlefork is a foot-traffic only hike that ascends about 1500 feet. Wheeler Peak can be hiked from Middlefork Lake and is the shorter route. If you stay to the left at the end of the blacktop, you will pass the duck or beaver pond which is a short hike from our cabin. Continuing on the forest road takes you to the official east fork trail head of Wheeler Peak and the Wheeler Peak wilderness. Wheeler is the highest peak in New Mexico at 13,161 feet....moreless

Our stay at Riverview Cabin was one of the most tranquil getaways we have had in a while. The description on their website (as well as the two dozen photos provided) represented exactly what this retreat offers, including several amenities in a cozy space. We were pleasantly surprised by the owners’ offer to use the beautiful deck of their home, as well as the stone fire pit. As described on the website: “Down the driveway you have access to the deck on the main house and of course the Red River”. Not only did we enjoy the s’mores we made by the fire, it was a treat to our senses watching and taking in the aroma of the pinon smoke (we brought our own firewood) wafting through the river valley. We spent several hours by the river. While the trout were elusive, I enjoyed watching my husband try to catch one while I sat lazily on the swing. We even enjoyed the walk up and down the driveway, with two small ropes we easily stepped over/under on our way. The owners clearly explained these barriers in a personal email, and we appreciated knowing we had this privacy without worrying about vehicle traffic. Plus, the Stellars bluejays would not have been as willing to stick around and put on the magnificent show we enjoyed. While the river is beautifully visible from a couple spots on the cabin’s deck, the vista that surrounds the cabin is breathtaking. Our first dinner of grilled burgers, was second only to the next night’s steaks. We planned our side dishes based on knowing the small appliances available. All this was savored on the deck table with the sound of the river below. The town of Red River is an easy scenic drive from the cabin, but we spent as much time as possible at Riverview. It was nice to be farther away from the bustle of town for a price comparable to a hotel room on Main St. We will definitely plan a return visit to this gem.

Manager response: Thank you!! It warms our hearts and makes our year when folks enjoy what we've come to cherish so about this little piece of Heaven in the mountains. We count our blessings and have to pinch ourselves still each time we return. We look forward to meeting you. Hopefully our visits to Red River will overlap. Laurent and Candee Perron
grossly over sold for "river front/ side" cabin.
grossly over sold for "river front/ side" cabin.
Cabin was very clean and had a large bathroom. however you must be careful not to trip over the bed when you walk in the door. The owners dont tell you that you have to walk down the hill to their cabin which is be the river to be near the river. We were afraid to walk down there because there were TWO cables across the road at TWO different places indicating for honest people to stay the heck out. So we stayed out. Thus not having access to the river untill the last day when we met the guy who cleans the place up. The owners have a very nice "riverfront" cabin for them selves, but dont expect to much from this place. It is perfect for someone who simply wants a place to lay their heads at night and stay away all day.

Manager response: There might be some validity to this review if we had not sent a welcome email just prior to their visit in which we say to please enjoy the table and chairs on the deck down the hill by the river at our main house. The renter received this email as do all who rent the Riverview Cabin. In our description we do not represent the RIVERVIEW Cabin as being river front or riverside. That's why it is called the RIVERVIEW CABIN. The first rope across the driveway is not a cable. The small rope is to prevent two wheel drive vehicles from attempting to drive down the hill because when they do, they invariably dig holes in the gravel with their back tires trying to come back up. And the one cable at the bottom is so cars do not drive all the way down to our home by the river. The Riverview cabin was originally built for my wife's head injured mother-in-law who was hit by a ten time DWI drunk driver in the DFW area in 1985. There is ample room for a wheelchair to go through the 3’ wide front door to the large bathroom. No one has ever or will ever complain about tripping over the bed when entering the studio. That statement is simply a gross exaggeration and just plain unfair. Some folks get a burr in their blanket and nothing anyone can say or do can make them happy. Laurent Perron

Quiet and restful

We enjoyed our stay. Cabin was super clean and very well maintained. I spoke with the owner twice by phone well ahead of out trip and his pride of ownership was evident and well deserved. My perception was slightly different than actually found. I was under the impression the rental was nearer the river, but in actuality it was approximately 100 yards above up the driveway from the owners personal home which did sit very near the river. The deck/porch of the rental was delightful, just sitting there with a glass of wine watching the humming birds and mountain wrens while taking a break from reading. I even saw a large buck deer with a very big rack about 100 yards behind the owner's home. All in all very enjoyable week with unseasonably cool weather. Thanks to owner, caretakers, and VRBO.

- Nearest Motorway: NM State Hwy 578 at Red River
Year Purchased: 1988
About: Candis and I have always liked the same things. On our honeymoon trip in 1975 driving our VW squareback from Texas to Disneyland in California, we fell in love with the mountains of New Mexico. Candee's sister's husband's family had and still has a place in the Upper Valley just around the corner where we spent fun holidays with them. On a hike in the summer of 1988 we saw the for sale sign, threw caution to the wind and wrote the Realtor an earnest money check. We did not break ground for seven years. It honestly was and is the best thing I've ever done besides marrying my best friend. We hope you enjoy our Riverview Cabin as much as we do.
Why Red River:
Being right on State Highway 578 is a plus especially in the winter months since the state maintains the road, plowing snow when necessary. Down the driveway next to the Red River is where we built the main house. The sound the river makes rushing over the rocks is such a gift and puts us to sleep like nothing else can. You too will hear the river from the studio apartment.
The Unique Benefits at this Studio:
The NM Game and Fish regularly stock the Red River near our cabin so try your luck right on our 75 feet of riverfront. We also have a spring fed pond on the place where several years ago my nephew released a brown trout he'd caught in the river. The trout is still there and has become a beloved pet so please try to see him but please please no fishing in the pond. Riverview Cabin has an RV pad with easy pull in access at the junction of Hwy 578 and Monte Vista Road directly behind Riverview Cabin. The level RV pad can accommodate a big-rig and has water, sewer and a standard 120V 20A outlet not recommended for use with an RV A/C but believe me, you will not need A/C up here. Maybe you might use your furnace at night only. Daily fee is $15. Only RV pad in the Upper Valley. Note: Sewer hookup will require almost double the length of a standard hose. Dump stations are available in town at two or more RV parks.
