Walk around the property and enjoy the flowers and jungle-like vegetation. The property is very very quiet. When the stars come out, there are millions to see and watch for falling stars. The ocean is just a look away over the lanai or out the large windows from inside. • Experience Island living as you never dreamed of. Two separate houses with two bedrooms and two baths. One house with the kitchen, living and dining area. We pride ourselves on keeping the house clean inside and out. This peaceful vacation rental is on the Big Island of Hawaii, just one mile up the road from one of the island's most beautiful locations, Laupahoehoe Point. A short walk or drive will reward you with vistas of green cliffs, often dotted with waterfalls that drop down into blue-green ocean. When you get to the point, you will see some of the most spectacular rugged coastline you will ever see. Take beach chairs any time of day and be hypnotized by the waves. This is great place to stay for two couples or small families because of the privacy afforded by the two buildings connected by a short walkway. This is a sweet house with beamed cathedral ceilings, Corian countertops and beautiful gardens. There is a great lanai to sit on for hours looking at the ocean, at the gardens, whales in the winter and the occasional double rainbows. Ohana is about 600 feet above the ocean on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the grand 13,796 foot extinct volcano that is snow capped in winter. Waipunalei, (why poona lay) is just 2 miles outside of sleepy little Lapahoehoe. Large windows continually remind you to look at the marvelous ocean. Just sitting on the lanai with a mai tai or a glass of fresh squeezed juice and you will know why Waipunalei is so heavenly. Coming back after exploring the rest of the over 4000 square mile island, you will be glad to be home. Just sit, relax and enjoy. You will feel like you are home-not just another vacation rental. The gardens of full of gorgeous flowers and birds such as the Hawaiian Pheasant. This part of the Big Island is truly heaven. The island is so beautiful that it will be hard to stay home and enjoy just being here. Beach chairs, boogie boards, beach toys, umbrella and towels are provided. All you need to bring are you clothes. We encourage you to rent for two weeks. There is plenty to do and see. This location is great for taking day trips to explore anywhere on the island. With two weeks, you're not as likely to feel 'driven' to be always on the go and not relax. People have thanked us later for encouraging them to go this route. The house is best for a family or two couples...or newlyweds. Minimum rental is one week. The Ohana is not for those who want to have a Waikiki kind of vacation where you lay in the sun on a while sand beach every day surrounded by crowds of people. Honolulu (Waikiki) can be a free stop over if you want to spend a couple days there on your way to the Ohana or back. The most beautiful while sand beaches are within an hour of the Ohana and other beaches are closer. It is a great location for family or couple to explore all the treasures of the Big Island---volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, hiking, golf, biking and beaches. The Ohana has it's own driveway and total privacy. Also, there is satellite TV and high speed wireless. Local calls are free. If you need long distance phone service, Verizon is a local cell carrier but, you can always use a phone card. The Big Island has it all - gorgeous white sand beaches, and active flowing volcano, huge waterfalls, 13,800 foot extinct volcano and more. Average temperature is the low 80s. We can help you see a Hawaii many people don't see. A cleaning service is not included and people are expected to leave the house in nice condition. This is reflected in our reasonable rates. A cleaning fee option may be available....just ask. We delight in sharing this piece of paradise with you. Email for availability or with question you may have. ...moreless

We loved being in Mango Cottage on the hill overlooking the ocean in a lush surrounding of foliage. It is 30 scenic miles from the great Farmer's Market in Hilo and on the way North to Waipio Valley and over to Hapuna Beach. This was our second time in Mango and fourth time on the hill close to Laupahoe point. The Fifties Restaurant in Laupahoe has delicious meals and great pies. It is quiet and lovely for meals on the front lanai of Mango Cottage.

We just finished up our stay here and it was amazing. Comfortable, clean and very affordable! The caretaker was a delight as well. You will have to do some cleaning when you leave, and take the trash to the transfer site, but it was so worth it. The view is breathtaking. Just don't try to find the property the first time in the dark. It is situated a ways back from the road. Once we found it though it was a breeze after that. Thank you for making our trip amazing. It was nice not to have to share a room next door to others, and the house offers optimal privacy because of it's location! Just splendid! The extra house is nice too, for couples or kids who need privacy. Bathrooms were cute and the house is decorated nicely. Lots of dishes, a blender, microwave and more. There was a lot of food leftover from the previous tenants. Oh yeah and an awesome coffee maker!!! It has everything you need! :)

Manager response: Thank You for your excellent review. Hearing such praise makes it worth while for me. I value my guests a lot and enjoy hearing from them. I try! Yes, I am a bit of a stickler for cleanliness and we have to be on top of it. It is the tropics after all. Yes, the Mango House is "off the beaten path" and that is what makes it a little more unique as it is secluded and private which, is definitely a plus for our guests. We do give good directions via email so, no matter which way you come from, Hilo or Kona, you can find it. One does need to pay attention to detail though. Once you are there, it is so worth it. What a wonderful place to truly enjoy Hawaii!!!!!!!!!! It had EVERYTHING! The view was just amazing to enjoy from the lanai every morning with our cup of coffee, and then to be surrounded with all of the lovely Hawaiian trees and vegetation! You didn't have to leave the house to enjoy your stay! The house was well equipped, and just perfect for us, too!

Manager response: Having great guests and hearing from them, like this review, makes it worth while. They make me want to do a better job at keeping the grounds up and the house as clean and fresh as possible for them. I always try to see what my guests see when they come in the door for the first time and first impression and go from there. I will put fresh flowers or colored leaves out and fresh fruit from the property like bananas or oranges and limes to squeeze on the papayas.

House was beautiful and the gardens were awesome. Enjoyed the orange juice fresh each morning from the trees in the garden. The views of the ocean from every room were beautiful. Home was immaculately clean and was very comfortable. The lack of air conditioning was not an issue as the wind through the windows was cool and fresh. The point with the waves crashing on the rocks was incredible. Hilo was a short distance away and Kono was not too far for day trips either. Would highly recommend Manta Ray dives with Jacks-most incredible experience.

Manager response: Thank You Elizabeth for your kind review. Laupahoehoe Point is a great place, isn't it? Sitting down there watching the waves crashing onto shore is amazing. I'm glad you enjoyed it and the weather here....It's about 75F here today on December 10th with a beautiful view over the ocean. I wish you the best.

The property was very nice, very clean, everything was first class. Staying in the Mango House is like living in a tropical paradise: go out your door and hand pick mangos, pineapples, oranges, lemons, limes ant other tropical fruit. If you are looking for a property that is quite, and very relaxing with lots of fresh air, Mango House is for you. While there be sure to visit "The 50's Cafe" it is only a short drive away and is an experience and a meal you will not forget.

Wish I had the time to expound on what a fabulous place this turned out to be for us. Ever the optimist, I am typically disappointed because my hopes are set impossibly high. The Mango House turned out to be exactly as expected, only better. Jane, the property manager, was terrific from start to finish. Next time we visit "The Big Island", I know exactly where we'll be staying. This wonderful rental offers lots of privacy, and is perfect for those who love a challenging walk or run, as well as just relaxing on the lovely lanai enjoying the spectacular view, a glass of wine, and a good book.

I believe this home is under new ownership, but with the same property manager-Jane, who is awesome! There were a couple dozen 5-star reviews which is part of why we chose this place. We were not disappointed. 1/2 hour north of Hilo and nestled into the hillside, the "mango house" offered total privacy, stunning views and easy highway access. This place is ideal for 2 couples or a small family. It's actually 2 little houses next to each other. One has only a bedroom and bath, the other also has a living room and kitchen. On our first morning we walked down to Laupahoehoe Point, which took us maybe 1/2 hour. This side of the big island is lush with tropical foliage, which we like better than the starkly contrasting desert climes of the Kona. It rains a lot on this side, but we had alt of sun too. If the rain were to persist you could always plan an activity near Waimea, or Hawi or Kona or the volcano park. Our only regret is that we only had a week here. Thanks Jane for the all the great tips and for being so available if we needed anything!

Manager response: Matthew and Suzanne, Thank You for the kind words. We enjoyed having you. Yes, my partner Dick and I, are the new owners for almost a year now. The previous owners decided to call it quits and enjoy retirement. We are just the opposite and are now moving into retirement and are challenged by this VRBO. Jane is a great gal to have working for us and I'm sure she loves it; especially working with great guests such as the both of you. Thanks again and please come back.

                      Manager info

                      Year Purchased: 2012

About: Dick and I are laid back and retired guys who want to enjoy life after work. Being from Wisconsin, we can relate to anyone wanting to escape the Mainland and have a great vacation. We hope to be the best for you.

                      Why Laupahoehoe:
We came over to the Big Island for a vacation and left with real estate brochures. Within 6 months, we were the proud owners of this beautiful property. Dick and I bought this place with the thought of having a piece of paradise for ourselves and to share with others. We truly want to share a great experience from your flight, to the Ohana and the Big Island itself. What sets this property off from others is the location. It is on the Hamakua coastline northerly of Hilo about 30 miles and easy to drive to, as well as Waimea, 30 miles northerly of us where there are many things to do. The Hamakua coast has many waterfalls and vistas that are just fantastic. Just sitting on the lanai looking out over the ocean with a cup of coffee in the morning is truly a delight making it hard to start your day of sightseeing or relaxing elsewhere. Laupahoehoe Point is a good walk, with about 2 miles r/t, where you can really just sit and watch the waves crashing over the rugged coast.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
From the first time we saw the online pictures of the Ohana, we loved it. The views from the lanai and the privacy of the area are phenomenal. It is almost rural enough but, close to lots and loads to do. Whether it is just sitting out on the lanai watching nature, grilling out, just having a drink or enjoying being alone; you are in a very private setting. Whether you want to just relax there or elsewhere close, it is all there. There are many seaside areas to enjoy and it's close to waterfalls, gardens, parks, golf, Mauna Kea, Hilo, Waimea, Kona, shopping, movies....it's all close enough to go see or do.
