Bailey cabin description
Welcome to the Retreat at Insmont.
Our 115 year old historic retreat is located approximately 45 miles from Denver via Hwy 285 and 2.1 miles south of the town of Bailey. The 1700sf retreat was originally built in 1898 and its history served as the Insmont General Store and Post Office, Depot for the Colorado Southern and Pacific Railroad, private home and art studio of famous painter Frank J Vavra and now our family mountain retreat.
The retreat is a truly inspirational home situated a stones throw from the North Fork of the South Platte River and nestled in the solitude of the Pike National Forest. The sound of the river rapids are heard year round and sweeping views of the river and mountains to the west make for some of the best sunsets in the area. It is understandable why our retreat is the perfect location for writers, artists, lovers, hikers, anglers, and all those who seek intimate sanctuary and solitude from city life. You will be surrounded by nature, tall pines, firs, wildflowers, deer, elk, wild turkeys, small mammals, fox, a variety of native birds and the picturesque beauty of a meandering river below a mountainside backdrop.
Over the past 7 years we completed the preservation of our historic retreat. Although it’s not a true “historic preservation”; painstaking efforts were taken to preserve the property the best we could, yet incorporate some modern comfort conveniences too. Directly off of the kitchen is spacious master “sunny side” bedroom with a queen size antique sleigh bed, adjoining bunk room for the kids and a quiet bay window seat that is ideal for enjoying the view while soaking up the morning sun over a cup of coffee. The “riverside” bedroom has a classic pedestal queen size bed, view of the cliffs and river, sitting area and access to the main living area. Both bedrooms share a classically restored bathroom with antique claw foot tub with views of the river and historic vanity and sink. The main living area is a spacious room with 9 foot antique tin panel ceilings, hand carved beams, and a large fireplace perfect for sipping brandy in the evenings. The main eating area is grounded by a large 12 foot farm table and chairs which is perfect for hosting large group dinners or crafting your favorite art project. Off of the main living room is the entryway and reading room with two cozy reading chairs, vaulted ceiling and an amazing view of the river and the mountains to the west. It is common to view Elk, deer and other wildlife in the meadow from this room.
Mountain Activities near the Retreat include:
• Jeeping Grants Pass, Hall Valley, Redcone Peak, Guanella Pass and others.
• Hike the nearby Colorado Trail, South Twin Cone Peaks, Platte Peak, Payne Benchmark.
• Fishing our stretch of river regularly produces native and raised trout in excess of 20”
• Additional fishing can be done at Wellington Reservoir, Anglers can fish in the river below or go to Boxwood Gulch, Cheesman Reservoir, Blue River, Long Meadow, or along the South Platte and along Bear Creek.
• Drink a morning coffee riverside outside of the retreat!
• Stargazing is some of the best in the area!!

• The Bailey Hundo Mountain Bike Race June 16th-18th
• Colorado Burning Man is less than a mile from the Retreat

Exquisite cabin, superbly located close to town and on the river, spectacular fall scenery and hiking in all directions, wonderfully relaxing and beautifully appointed. Great kitchen, comfortable fireplace, wonderful furniture. Perhaps best of all was the fascinating history of the homestead and the area. A true treasure. Owners most accommodating. We'll be back!

Exactly what we were looking for and more.

The Retreat at Insmont was such a relaxing and enjoyable place to stay. Nestled in a beautiful valley along the South Platte River, we found it to be the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. We stopped in Denver for food and supplies and made full use of the well appointed kitchen (spacious gas stove/oven was a nice touch). After a delicious meal we would relax (aka nap) on the cloud soft leather couch watching flames dance in the fireplace. It was exactly what we were looking for and more. The quality and detail of the workmanship throughout the house shows the amount of love Doug and Pam have for the place. We were so glad to have stayed here and would not hesitate to come back. Doug was very helpful and provided ample information about the property and the surrounding area. I highly recommend The Retreat at Insmont.

Owner response: I actually got good laugh as I have learned to avoid the couch and loveseat ifi want to get anything done while I am up there! Small children have been known to sit on them never to be found until dinner! Glad you enjoyed your stay and we hope to see you again soon!
The Retreat at Insmont is truly everything it's cracked up to be. The cabin is much bigger than the pictures show, and twice as charming. Many modern touches like the kitchen make it very comfortable. World class flyfishing to several amazing streams is a short drive away on top of the small pristine section of the North Fork of the South Platte in the back yard. Saw lots of wildlife. Located just close enough to decent sized towns if you want to grocery shop, eat out or even have a Starbucks. All the while, you feel a million miles away from everything when hanging out at the cabin. Historical information provided by the owners really makes you feel the significance of this place as it's covered with handcarved doors, wood beams, beds, etc from the famous artist who once lived there. It is uniquely charming and I had to drag my wife outside after 2 days as she was completely content relaxing inside. We would stay there again.

Romantic Weekend Getaway
Romantic Weekend Getaway
My boyfriend surprised me with a romantic weekend getaway to Insmont, and I fell in love with the unique house, comfortable and cozy rooms, the beautiful kitchen, and that huge stone fireplace. We loved cooking dinner and eating at the big wooden table, toasting s'mores over the fire, and trying a little fishing in the river out back. The house had just about everything we needed for our stay, and we were sad to leave. We stayed Friday night through Sunday morning, and after dinner on Saturday night, we were relaxing in front of the fire, sipping wine, when he pulled a diamond ring out of his pocket and proposed to me. It was the most romantic weekend of my life, and I'm so thrilled that he chose such a beautiful place to make such wonderful memories. I'm so looking forward to our next visit!

Owner response: CONGRATS!!!!! and thanks for sharing your experience and confirming why we decided to share this amazing property with couples like yourselves! We look forward to seeing you on the Honeymoon!!! ;-) If you need a wedding photographer let me know!!!
My fiance, I, and our friends were very happy with our stay at The Retreat at Insmont. It is no mere rental with some personal touches added. Rather, it is a fully genuine and charming home in a great location. We found it bigger on the inside than the pictures made it look. The outside provides some nice seating areas and access to the river. The nights here are wonderfully dark and silent. I can't imagine a better place to spend a couple days unwinding, which is what we were there for. Doug stopped by to welcome us and ensure everything was in order. He was exceptionally accommodating during our visit, even allowing us an early arrival our first day, since the property was vacant the prior night. We recommend The Retreat at Insmont unconditionally.

Owner response: Glad to hear you enjoyed our Retreat!! Also, congratulations on your engagement! The place is great for honeymooners too!!! ;-). Hope to see you backs sometime soon!
The house exceeded expectations, the property is very well equipped and comfortable, The area is remote enough yet a close drive to town. It is a great getaway for people from Denver as it is only 45 miles away, so you can get there quickly yet you feel like to you far away from the city. Ideal for those looking to get away from their job for a few days to relax and unwind. Best sleep I have gotten in a long time.

Owner response: I have to say that's one of the nicest features of the Retreat being 45 minutes from the city but you feel like you are way into the wilderness while you are there. I also like the quietness as well which allows the sole to decompress from the week!
Most enjoyable retreat ever!

Our stay at the retreat was a real treat! Not only is the inn amazing but the surrounding landscape provides a nice view of the mountains/lake and lots of interesting art. Inside the inn there are not only are the modern conveniences that make the adventure enjoyable but, more important, this is almost like visiting an art museum...a plethora of artistic touches...around every corner. We loved the fireplace and made a toasty one each morning and evening. I highly recommend this as an option for anyone who wants to get away from the crowd and take a break.

Finding the Retreat was simple and the drive up was breathtaking!! We are so lucky we were able to enjoy it! The Retreat was gorgeous( pictures couldn't even capture all it's beauty) and I loved all the details the former artist added to this property. RIght when you walk in, you have a gourmet yet rustic kitchen and take in the beautiful views from the window facing the river! The furnishings are traditional and rustic and everything feels like an adventure while you are here. Everything was clean and comfortable and gave a calming and inviting feeling as we arrived and as we stayed there! My kids enjoyed hunting around to find the hidden treasures and details in the exterior and loved the bunk room as their very own hideaway! Pay attention to the details in all the wood carvings throughout the Retreat! We enjoyed hiking, fishing, Pine Valley Ranch Park, the cute town of Bailey ( everyone was so helpful there) and celebrating our daughter's Birthday too! The owners were super helpful and the house manual was very detailed too! Our nightly campfires were breathtaking as we star gazed and roasted marshmallows and had fantastic family bonding time. I can't wait to go again in the fall and make more memories! I would HIGHLY recommend this property for your next getaway!

Owner response: What great comments about the property!!! We Look forward to hosting you again in November!!!
This property is beautiful! The scenery is amazing, and then the house is decorated with the perfect mix of comfort and artistry. You are so close to the river that all night one can hear the rapidly running stream. Every night, a pair of deer walked right past the large picture windows. Cell phone reception is a little sketchy, but the wifi connection was great. There is no cable TV, but the included subscriptions of HuluPlus and Pandora were great! The owners are great to work with, and you will love to read about the history of the property. The pictures are beautiful, but do not do justice to the actual property. We hope to return!

Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: As life long Colorado natives, we take full advantage of our little retreat in Bailey to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. We originally purchased the retreat in 2007 after a searching the state for a perfect mountain property that was close to Denver, had mountain views, was located in a National Forest and most importantly, was located on a river or lake. As you can imagine, those properties are rare and expensive to say the least! As fate would have it, we literally fell into this property after spending an evening at our friends cabin less than a stones throw away.
Why the Owner Chose Bailey:
The retreat is one of the most intimate, charming and rare one-of-a-kind, historic homes in the Bailey area. It has it all, mountains, solitude, history, waterfront, National Forest and clean mountain air. If the 3 bears really did have a home.... this storybook property would be it!!
