Casa Cardinale is situated just a few steps from the main piazza at the top of the town with views across the valley to other hilltowns nestling on the Apennine range in the distance. This very special place is right in the centre of the delightful hilltown of Montefalco noted for its rich history and the award-winning Sagrantino wine.

Restored by artist Neil Moore with extraordinary authenticity, the building was once part of a cardinal’s residence and has been exquisitely decorated to preserve the colours and forms of its Medieval and Renaissance past.

The rooms within Casa Cardinale are of generous proportions and contain original oak beam ceilings, floors in terra cotta, and exotic furnishings including an Etruscan cinerary urn as the bathroom hand basin in apartment "Lucrezia" on the first floor. The two levels can be rented as one house which sleeps up to seven on two queen-sized beds and sofa beds. "Lucrezia" has a fully operational kitchen with dining area and is more suitable for longer stays. The ground level apartment, "Federico", has a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave oven, sink, kettle and coffee-maker.

Expertly modernised in a way that harmonizes with its historic detail it will provide a memorable experience in the the heart of one of the gems of Umbria's hilltowns. The house itself is in a quiet side street - the most photographed in town - with an award-winning restaurant and other eating places just a few steps away in the main piazza.

Montefalco is fast becoming renowned as a wine growing district and in particular for its award-winning Sagrantino wines. Wine tastings, cooking classes, truffle hunts, guided tours, shopping expeditions, hiking and bicycle excursions as well as a dedicated driver can be organised by negotiation.

Visit the numerous nearby wineries and olive groves, hunt for truffles with local farmers, attend festivities in the piazza or simply unwind in a local spa and sauna. Alternatively, you might explore other historic towns such as Bevagna, Spoleto, Spello, Perugia and Orvieto with major remnants of their Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance past, visit Assisi and its surrounds notable for the life of Saint Francis, or Deruta for its ceramics. No matter how you spend your time, this magical place will undoubtedly entice you to return and discover more of its treasures.

Why the Owner Chose Montefalco

We fell in love with Casa Cardinale and the lifestyle it affords virtually on the central piazza of Montefalco with its cafes, restaurants, spa - and in particular the award winning wines.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment

The apartment is very close to Montefalco's central piazza, and just a few paces from Umbria's best cook in the restaurant Alchimista. The town has recently established itself on the wine lover's circut with its Sagrantino red wine, winning awards as Italy's best red. Sitting in the piazza at sunset with a glass of this liquid treasure, some local pecorino cheeses, and wild boar salami helps keeps us focussed on life's essentials. Cristina, our property manager, is just a 'phone call away should you require assistance.

Wine tastings, cooking classes, truffle hunts, guided tours, shopping expeditions, hiking and bicycle excursions as well as a dedicated driver can be organised by negotiation.

Hilltop Magic

Our stay at Casa Cardinale in July 2011 was our best lodging of the entire trip. It was the best combination of exquisite period accommodations, proximate location to the center of a unique hilltown, with access to great and varied food. We speak of it often and would return any day.

Dear Carol, Thank you VERY much for making available to us such a perfect vacation. I have traveled a lot over the years, but cannot remember enjoying before anything quite so fairy-tale like. The pictures truly do not represent the beauty, quality and care evident in the apt. Anyone could have happily just moved in. Your advice to use the book for a restaurant destination was also right on. You are wrong about Vassani, and I would without exception recommend it to your clients if they could possibly afford it. They have a fixed price menu, so at least there would be no surprise. You and everyone else there were so friendly and generous. This would have been such an exception in most places, One day we found ourselves in a town, headed into to avoid the truck fumes on the way back to the tunnel from Norcia, and thought we’d get a cold drink. The little town on a hill, Valle something, had literally not one commercial place as we stolled though its winding walkways. The grandmas sitting out front, if here, would have had shotguns or at least made it very clear: what the hell were we doing there? But no, we got smiles and hellos. You furnished the apt. with such nice things. I hope we left it in the same condition in which we found it, at least we did try. We will return, and this time you will find us on a big motorcycle. As for me, I’d pick up and move to the area on the fly tomorrow. Again, thank you for “setting the table” for us. We are sincerely appreciative. Yours, Gail Simon and Matt Gannon
