Location: Stonington, Deer Isle, Acadia, Maine, USA (Near Acadia Ntl Park and Bar Harbor, on Deer Isle)
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 1 Bath (Sleeps 6)
Drift Wood Cottage is well off the beaten path. Located down a looping private, dead end road that borders the woods. The home offers a quiet and private place to sit and watch the deer, birds or stars.
The house is filled with hundreds of books for those of us that like to read, and know everything. Comfortable furniture and new beds as of '07.
Five minute drive to Stonington village and all the restaurants, shops and harbor side attractions.
Stonington is a small lobstering/artist community that does not cater exclusively to tourism as many of the coastal towns do. One will not find tacky tourist wares and shops filled with outlet bargains. What you will find here is real people, fifth-generation lobsterman, farmers, long-time rusticators, and artists who prize their seclusion. The galleries and shops are filled with one-of-a-kind works. The seafood is fresh of the boat. The nature trails and smaller islands beg to be explored.
Stonington and Deer Isle Harbor offer dozens of spruce studded islands that experienced coastal boaters rank as the most beautiful in the state. Thanks to these exceptional islands, we are among Maine's most popular destinations for sea kayaking and adventurers from around the world. Many of the islands are open to day visitors and overnight camping. One of the Nature Conservancy owned islands hosts an untended flock of sheep in the summer.
Rocky and remote, this rough-hewn sea town remains dominated in spirit by local lobsterman and artists.
Stonington offers a vacation unlike any other. It's the place people have quietly been coming for decades seeking out it's powerful combination of invigorating small-town charm and peaceful coastal wilderness.
