Love the house and view
Love the house and view
This is a cute little house with gigantic views! My husband and I looked into staying in Elk at a couple of the B&Bs. The prices ranged from crazy to stupid expensive for just a room (250.00 to 450.00) and then a friend said I should look at VRBO. Yeah! Found this house, asked about dates and booked it. Did everything over the computer after talking once to the lady who is managing it for a friend. We could walk to the little store (expensive but worth not driving) to get picnic stuff. And we walked to breakfast and dinner in town. Nice to park the car and leave it. Flannel sheets and clean quilts. Cable and wifi. Bathroom has only a shower but everything was very nicely clean and towels provided for the hot tub too. We cooked a few times and found everything we needed in the cupboards. 5 minute walk to the beach and the hot tub has the most amazing view of the beach and the stars at night were beautiful. Also we could bring our dog for a fee of 25 bucks. Most of the places we checked either said no pets or 50 a night for our Mollie. I think we have found our place to escape from the hot valley!

Manager response: I'm so happy you found a place that Mollie could enjoy with you. Both the owner and manager have dogs and know what a big part of a family they become. We are very happy to be able to welcome the furry members of the family to the coast and the cottage.
My husband and I were fortunate to spend our 35th wedding anniversary at this lovely home perched on the ocean. We originally booked three nights but were so happy with our stay that we were able to add another night. We found the house clean, homey and well furnished. The views are breathtaking, the bathroom small yet clean, the beds had great linens and were very comfy, the kitchen was complete with everything we needed, the living room was great and the laundry facilities were sufficient. Oh, the hot tub was superb! We loved the location as it was quiet but within walking distance of restaurants. We spent one day in Mendocino, one day at the Botanical Gardens and one day driving the spectacular coast north to the redwoods. Wineries are close by as well. Overall we were extremely pleased with our stay and hope to return again when we are back visiting our son in San Francisco. It was a cool retreat from our long hot summer here in Georgia.

Manager response: I am so glad you enjoyed the coast. The Botanical Gardens are a very special place...and the views from the western edge are spectacular!!! Please come on back when the Georgia heat is too much to take!
Great location. Terrible management.
Great location. Terrible management.
The location was great: quiet, and some wild life. I am giving this unit a zero (one is the lowest vrbo offers) because the "management" service was unresponsive - negligent, even. After leaving and cleaning up the unit, the manager Holly emailed that we were losing money on an agreed upon return because "according to the housekeeper she had 'a half hour worth of cleaning'" from how we left the unit. In fact, we had cleaned up the unit (which wasn't so clean to begin with: bathroom, bedding, hot tub, etc.) before we left. The manager Holly has repeatedly ignored our requests for explanation of this untrue claim to be given our refund. She has yet to return any of our calls or emails regarding an outstanding rebate - from dirty housekeeping when we arrived. Totally unacceptable and unprofessional.

Manager response: Wow. I am speechless. I have nothing but 5 star reviews on this property (not many, but we just started renting it)....AND on my other two VRBO vacation rentals. And I take great pride in my 5 Star reviews and having hosted the VRBO Bear at one of them. Soon after checking in on a Friday, this couple called to say they were unable to locate the BBQ. I purchased a new BBQ and briquettes delivering both in a timely fashion. This couple was offered, and accepted, a 75.00 refund as compensation for the BBQ being missing/stolen for the "inconvenience of changing our menu around". They sent me an email on Sunday afternoon, expressing the concern that the bedding wasn’t clean. I was able to reassure them the house had been cleaned and the used sheets/towels were actually at my house to be laundered. They were also offered access to the supply of clean sheets in the laundry area. We do not charge an added cleaning fee in addition to the rental fee...According to the rental agreement, which these guests signed: "you are responsible for washing/drying/putting away dishes/pots/pans...etc. If this is not done, you will be charged at the rate of 25.00 per hour for time needed to complete this task". The stove had used pots/pans on it and the dishes had not all been washed. Housekeeping staff take care of all other laundry and cleaning of the vacation home. I emailed them and let them know their 75.00 refund was being reduced to 62.50 for the cleaning of pots/pans/dishes. They have been issued and sent a check for 62.50. This deduction from the 75.00 “BBQ missing” refund was in lieu of cashing their security/cleaning/damage deposit of 150.00 and refunding 137.50 after the 12.50 charge. I have not heard from them since the exchange of emails regarding the 12.50 deduction. At no time during their visit did “management” receive any comments or complaints from them about the bathroom or hot tub being "dirty".
I and my family stayed here earlier in the spring. Though we’ve been here a few times before, this was our first time under the new management. Even before the change and marvelous updates, I was a real fan of the property…though previously the furnishings were a little bare-bones, there’s not really a better location and view on the coast for my money – especially with the hot tub out back with the views of the coast and sea stacks, and Milky Way at night. Now that the place has undergone a few updates, it is really unbeatable. Nothing too fancy, but more cozy (and with internet…not sure if that’s a blessing or a curse ;) ), which makes it an excellent retreat and/or home base for exploring the Mendo coast. Don’t expect the Ritz, though it is more than decent for our needs – even has a nice little gas fireplace to warm you up when the fog rolls in. Can sleep six, though we are usually there with four (two bedrooms and a pull-out couch in the main room; 1 bath). It also has direct walking access to the Greenwood State Beach. This is a big plus for us – many of the properties up there have great views but no access to the coast, and our friends and family love cruising down to explore the tidepools, go kayaking, or to picnic. Also, great sandwiches at the little market across the street – and don’t forget to hit Queenie’s for breakfast/brunch. Bottom line: I liked the place before and I love it now. Would recommend for anybody who doesn’t necessarily need the lap of luxury but loves a welcoming spot with amazing views, sounds, and beach access. Can’t think of a better place to let the sound of surf put you to sleep each night.

Elk is an awesome little town and this cottage fits the bill for a relaxing vacation. We have stayed in Elk many times and this cottage was a first. Homey and includes all the amenities; TV, phone, laundry, and hot tub. I would love to live there! Close to the beach, store, and Anderson Valley. Quiet and restful. Grab a bottle of wine and relax. Holly checked on us and made sure we had everything we needed for a great vacation. I highly recommend for a couple or family.
