This charming, spacious, impeccably furnished one-bedroom garden apartment with gas fireplace in a 1908 Edwardian building is in the peaceful, tree-lined residential northern Nob Hill neighborhood in the historic center of San Francisco, just six blocks from the luxury hotels atop Nob Hill, eight blocks from the "crookedest street in the world" and steps from the corner where the famous Hyde Street cable car line turns north to run to the Bay. The apartment is very popular, has many return visitors and is almost always booked, so reserve early.
The 750-square-foot flat, in a three unit building set well off the street behind a single-family house, has been completely renovated and is beautifully furnished with a combination of tasteful modern furniture and antiques, including vintage photos of the city and original water-color and oil paintings of San Francisco. There is a large gas fireplace in the dining/living area. The floor is gorgeous handmade Saltillo Mexican tiles, with Afghan kilim rugs. French doors open out north to a quiet private patio, filled with flowering plants and furnished with wrought-iron patio furniture and a barbeque. There are three good-sized windows on the west wall.
The bedroom features an antique iron bed, comfortable queen-sized European mattress, high-quality sheets and embroidered bed linens. It has two closets and a chest of drawers. The fully equipped stainless steel and wood kitchen has granite counters, a full-sized refrigerator, and a cooking island. Basic foodstuffs (oil, spices, paper towels, etc.) are provided. Impeccable bathroom with bath and shower. There is recessed dimmable lighting throughout.
The dining table seats six. The living area has a large, very comfortable sectional couch. There is also a very comfortable double foam futon second bed, as well as a single futon. All linens for the beds are provided.
The apartment has high-speed hard-wired Internet access as well as wireless Internet. Phone (free local calls), 27-inch TV with cable, mini-stereo CD system, DVD and VCR player.
Built-in bookcases hold a 1500-book library, including a large collection of children's books and dozens of San Francisco and Bay Area guidebooks. There is a work nook with a desk. The owners, two San Francisco writers, also provide a personally-written guide to the neighborhood, including their favorite restaurants, 4 great neighborhood walks described in detail, stores and services, suggestions for kids, etc.
The location is unbeatable: In the historic northeast heart of the city, on the desirable (residential, non-downtown) north slope of Nob Hill, just a ten-minute walk from the world-famous hotels on top of Nob Hill and a ten-minute walk in the other direction from the top of Russian Hill, San Francisco's most beautiful neighborhood, with its famous Crooked Street, Lombard. This is the only neighborhood in San Francisco where you can walk to downtown's Union Square in 20 minutes and also to the beach (at Aquatic Park) in 20 minutes.
Despite being in the very heart of the city, the apartment is very quiet, peaceful and safe: you can hear the cable car bells ring as you relax in the patio. There are excellent restaurants and a market half a block away and a charming sidewalk cafe on the corner. A major shopping street with everything, Polk, is a block and a half away. A 24-hour supermarket is four blocks away. Gorgeous parks, including Lafayette, Huntington and Alice Marble, are found in all directions, none more than a 10-minute walk away. The spectacular Crissy Field, the restored crown jewel of San Francisco's northern shoreline, is a 45 minute walk, a 15-minute bike ride or a 10 minute drive away. Street parking is decent (there are no meters) and there are inexpensive parking lots nearby. Public transportation is excellent.

Overall this was a great experience. The property owner was very helpful and provided spot on instructions on finding the property. He also was quite flexible with our last minute plans and early check in. The house was conveniently located near a cable car stop and was well stocked with creature comforts. We would stay at this property again if we get the opportunity to visit San Francisco.

We found this apartment almost perfect for 3 of us. It is a cozy and welcoming apartment with all the necessary amenities, apart from a washing machine (there is a laundromat very close by). Previous occupants have left a supply of non-perishables for anyone to use. The bookcases are stacked with a wide variety of content. The location is superb. Easy walking distance to many tourist sights - though the return walk is invariably uphill, often steep. Public transport is only a short walk in any direction. The restaurants on the corner are all wonderful. Gary and Kate have been very helpful and friendly hosts. We absolutely loved it here and would thoroughly recommend this apartment to anyone who wants to see the sights of San Francisco. Our only regret is that we have to leave.

What a great place to stay for our kids' first visit to San Francisco! We loved the location and all the conveniences the apartment had to offer. We would definitely stay here again on our next visit! Convenient to transportation, restaurants, shops - everything we needed!! Plus is was super easy to find.

We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone seeking a quiet, comfortable, homey, well-located, and reasonably priced apartment in San Francisco. Great location with lots of nice shops and restaurants nearby. Great access to public transit, including cable cars. Walking distance to Chinatown and other attractions. Plenty of room for our family of four. Apartment looks very much like the posted photos. Kitchen is great. Owners are very nice and very responsive. The only discrepancy that we experienced with the listing is that the wireless internet seldom worked. If we hadn't had access to an alternative provider, it would have to hard to use it most of the time. We didn't mention this to the owner as it didn't pose a problem for us, however.

If one could live anywhere in the world, why would one live anywhere other than San Francisco? I have often thought that, and the past week, spent in this lovely pied a terre, has only continued my feeling. We have stayed in many of these short-term rentals -- in California, Maine, Paris, Florence, etc. This was by far the most welcoming and comfortable. Some day I would like to return and just spend a week curled up with the books!

What a great comfortable place you have. Room for all four of us to relax and the kids to run around a bit. We walked and sightseed till we came back and dropped. Very relaxing place and easy to get to the many places we went during our visit to your fair city.

So ideally located...and great for the kids. We were impressed by the Aerobed. San Francisco was chilly, of course, but the city itself is warm. And so many things to see, to do, to eat...It was a splendid start for our first American vacation with two eight-year-old twins.

We enjoyed our San Francisco "home" tucked away a half block from the cable cars. Quiet for sleeping at night. The kitchen was so well-stocked it almost inspired us to cook. Candles provided nice atmosphere for eat-in prepared meals. It was great to live in a real neighborhood, get to know the local streets and stores and hop on the cable cars to everywhere. Thanks for the tips on grocery stores, restaurants and walks. We can't wait to return.
