Siracusa condo description
This apartment home has been completely renovated and refurbished to a high standard. It is located in a beautiful, historical building on one of the most desireable streets in the heart of the charming, walkable, and quiet Mastrarua neighborhood of Ortigia, the historic center of Siracusa. The ground floor of the palazzo pre-dates the 1693 earthquake with 2 wells dating from the 1500s. Upon entering the palazzo there are two sweeping stairways to the left and right which join in the center, forming spectacular arches. The upper floors of the palazzo post-date the major 1693 earthquake, and were constructed in the 17 and 1800s!
The home consists of a living room, a large eat-in kitchen with a sea-front balcony, 2 double bedrooms with city view balconies, a very large and spacious, modern bathroom with sea view, a secondary living/TV/computer room with sea views and 2 spacious terraces with direct sea views.
This home is located in the heart of the Ortigia Island historic district in Siracusa. It is only a few minutes walk to Piazza Duomo, the Ionian Sea, the ancient Jewish mikvah, the Temple of Apollo, the marina and many other historic monuments and sites, not to mention fine restaurants, shopping, a seaside promenade, and more. The ancient Greek Theater, the archeological park and museums are a half hour walk or ten minute drive away. The airport at Catania is approximately 45 minutes' drive to the north. (Airport pick up and drop off available at low cost from a local friendly taxi service!)
The apartment is located on the second floor (above the ground floor) of an old historical ‘palazzo’ on what was once known as 'La Mastrarua', the most important and prestigious street in Siracusa with the best residences and buildings. From the communal street entrance, two sweeping stairways provide access to the private entrance to the apartment.
The private entrance to the apartment leads into an entrance foyer area that in turn provides access to the living room, to the left and to the two bedrooms, to the right. There are classic Sicilian terra cotta floors, inset with small, hand-made tiles in the entrance foyer, living room and kitchen. The living room has been furnished with two comfortable sofas, comfortable occasional chairs, coffee table, bookshelves and a stereo system for your musical enjoyment. The walls are done with a rich Venetian plaster finish, the ceiling is vaulted and there are beautiful, ornate crown moldings around the perimeter of the room. All of the original vaulted ceilings in this home are registered with the Ortigia Island Historic District offices as architectural features that cannot be changed or modified. This living room is adjacent to the kitchen and affords sea views even while relaxing on the sofa, while listening to music or listening to the gentle rhythm of the waves.
Glass lighting throughout this home adds to the elegant feel of this elegant apartment home. The kitchen is located just beyond the living room. It is equipped with a double sink, gas range/stove, microwave oven, refrigerator, and an oven with convection and other features. The kitchen cabinetry is real cherry wood with a beautiful, mottled, Italian 'pink' marble top. There is a dishwasher too. Most importantly, the kitchen has huge 10' high balcony doors that open to reveal the shimmering blue Ionian Sea. Eating in this kitchen is like eating on a cruise ship with unobstructed views. Some folks say a view becomes 'neutral' after a while. I did not find this to be true as I could spend hours cooking with the balcony doors open, enjoying the sight and sound of the sea below. I never tired of the endless horizon and the nuances the sea offered each day.
There is small 'laundry room' off the living room, near the bathroom which houses a washing machine for our guests' use. This small room and the bathroom, feature original antique doors that have been completely restored.
The master bedroom is furnished with a California king-size bed (probably the only one in Siracusa), bedside tables, two large walk-in closets, a dresser and a chest of drawers. There is ample space for clothes and storing luggage. Like the living room, this room has beautiful, vaulted ceilings and crown moldings. Unlike the living room, this room has centuries old, original, octagonal-shaped floor tiles in near-mint condition. These floor tiles are not only beautiful, they are rare. These tiles are a protected architectural feature of this home and they are registered in the Ortigia Island Historic District offices. A western-facing balcony completes the master bedroom. It offers city views and ample western sun in the afternoons. The ample storage has made this apartment home a comfortable home for those seeking a home for several months, instead of simply 1 or 2 weeks. The bedroom also has an air-conditioning and heating unit, just as the other rooms in this home do.
The second bedroom is furnished with a queen-sized bed, two night tables, a large dresser, wardrobe and occasional chair. This bedroom boasts a floor that is among the most beautiful and prized floors in Siracusa. The centuries old floor tiles in the floral pattern are rare and valuable. These tiles are also a protected architectural feature of this home, registered in the Ortigia Historic District offices. This bedroom, like other rooms in the home, has an original vaulted ceiling, beautiful crown moldings and a balcony with city views, offering rich western sun during the afternoons.
The modern, sunny, windowed bathroom has been decorated with rich, terra cotta floor tiles and simple Sicilian wall tiles. It offers a large glass walk-in shower, sink, bidet, toilet, two sinks and rich marble surfaces. There is plenty of storage and surface space for all your toiletries.
There is a stairway from the kitchen which leads to 'the mansarda' - the Italian name for attic room, however the word attic hardly describes this high-ceilinged, beautiful space. The mansarda is a secondary, more informal, living room which is used to enjoy TV/computer and which has access to the two stunning terraces. The mansarda is painted in a soothing, robin's egg blue tone, that mirrors the sea and sky. It features the original, commissioned, mosaic works of Italian mosaic artist, Ercole Bordin of Venice. Because there are two sets of terrace doors and two windows, this room is flooded with air and light. It is a wonderful retreat where you can relax with a good book or simply nap on the sofa as the gentle sound of the waves rocks you to sleep.
The front terrace is an ideal place to have a cocktail or glass of wine, or at least that was our habit. The back terrace which is larger is great for relaxing with friends in the evening and maybe even having an informal meal of Italian appetizers 'al fresco' under the starry sky. There are stunning, unobstructed views of the sea and beyond from both terraces.
There can be parking immediately outside the property along the sea wall, as the street where one enters the building has parking only for residents. There is additional parking available within very short walking distance of the apartment. Many of our guests choose to rent a car and so far, we have had no complaints or problems regarding parking.
Sites of interest within the city include the ancient Greek Theatre, where performances are still staged during May & June, and which forms part of a larger archeological park. The archeological museum has one of the best displays of archeological remains in Sicily. The old cathedral located in Piazza Duomo, the heart of Ortigia (and the city's 'Living Room,') dates from 1728, and includes eighth century Norman artifacts and the columns of a Greek Temple dating back 2500 years.
Siracusa also offers beaches which are generally located to the south of the city and include the resorts of Arenella, Fontane Bianche, and the protected coastline of Vendicari. There are summer ferries to beautiful beaches as well, just across the harbor and there is even swimming 3 minutes walk from the apartment on the shoals surrounding the historic district!

About the owner: Hello! I'm Frank Riela, one of the property owners. My partner and co-owner is Kevin Brandt, and I need to find a photo with both of us in it! We are from the Los Angeles, California area (Pasadena actually). We 'discovered' Sicily in the early 1990s. We were here for the 'millenium new year' with about a dozen friends in December 1999, when we serendipitously found and bought our beautiful centuries old home right on the Ionian Sea in the Siracusa historic district. By 2004 we decided to move here and 'live our dream' of giving up our careers and trying 'la dolce vita' (the sweet life) on for size. We love Siracusa, Sicily and all of Italy. I'm sure you will too!
Why the Owner Chose Siracusa:
This property is special because it is rare to find a home this large and this comfortable in the historic district. It is also rare to find a home that is updated to the degree this one is and even rarer to find one literally across the street from the sea.
