The house was amazing, it was cozy and well furnished. We were in town for a cultural event and wished we could have stayed longer, just to relax. It was clean, quiet and beautiful.Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway.

We so enjoyed staying at the Papa Bear house over President's Day weekend! We were three families, and there was plenty of room. The giant living/dining/TV room was amazing. We loved the hot-tub, and the little deer that visited us two days in a row. I would highly recommend it, and would love to stay at the Papa Bear again!Did you find this review helpful? I stayed here with a group of friends over the New Year's holiday and had a wonderful time. The house is beautiful and the owners are incredibly hospitable. They even had bath robes laid out on the all beds for us! I would recommend the Papa Bear to anyone looking for the perfect getaway in the woods.Did you find this review helpful? Our three families of four had an exquisite time in he lodge. We spent our days lounging and reading, and our evenings by the river. It is obvious that you take great care in this special place and we thank you for sharing it with us. Memories were built.... P.S. this was the best 40th birthday weekend I could imagine.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Dear Drue, We had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed the large living room at Papa Bears. Ideal for a rainy Memorial weekend. We barely noticed the kids underfoot. They swam and hiked in the Yuba! We look forward to coming back in any season. Kind regards. P.S Sorry we didn't meet Rene, but we loved her pottery and style-next time.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

This was the perfect place for our daughter's family to stay for her wedding. It reflected on so many values we hold. Nature, natural setting, quiet and room to come together and share. Rene and Drue, you were so helpful and flexible, thank you. We had a wonderful stay. I am exhausted from the wedding but renewed in spirit. I think I will smell the lavender before I go to take a little of Papa Bear with us.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Owner info

About the owner: We have lived in this wonderful community of Nevada City for over 20 years now, and find that our guests love the area as much as we do. Papa Bear's Lodge was our family home until our son went away to college. We now live in town, right next to Rene's studio, just a short distance from the lodge and cabins. We personally attend to the upkeep and management of the property. Our cabins reflect our love for the arts, and you'll find Rene's handmade pottery there too. If you hit it just right, you may be able to catch one of us in a local play.
Why the Owner Chose Nevada City:
We stumbled upon the jewel of Nevada city 24 years ago, and impressed with the local theater scene and the wholesome, friendly atmosphere, decided this was the place to live and raise our young son. Now, having raised along with him, goats, horses and veggie gardens, we decided to moved a couple of years ago from Papa Bear's Lodge to our home in town, which is conveniently located next to Rene's pottery studio. We love the friendly people, history, culture and ambiance of Nevada City, as well as the beauty of the surrounding foothills. We consider it a gift to be able to share our lodge and cabins with visitors to this area.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Though you feel like you are out in the woods, you are only 2.5 miles from the energy of downtown, with it's many shops, live theater, fine dining, city park and pool, and night life. Go the other direction, and you are just 3.5 miles from our magical Yuba River with its huge boulders and big swimming holes as well as fine hiking paths. If you want to just stay cozy in one of the log cabins, you will not be disappointed. The feeling there is so serene, even we feel like we are on vacation when we are there. In the summer time, the children's camps are in session all around Lake Vera. We are located next to Camp Augusta. To see their summer schedule, go to www.campaugusta.com.
