Property description

Pool house for two on the sunny South Kona Coast.

'Hale Polu Lani' (Blue Sky House) rests on the lower slopes of Mauna Loa, where sea and sky meet. It boasts grand views of the Pacific Ocean and the Kona Coast, colorful gardens, sun-drenched days, stunning sunsets, and starry nights.

This 3-room guest cottage on our 1-acre property is surrounded by lush gardens and comfortably furnished with new island-style decor and tasteful touches.

A large, main room is filled with amenities and spaciously accommodates bedroom, living room, kitchen & dining areas. The bright, comfortable living area has lots of windows and a ceiling fan to bring in afternoon trade winds and cool evening breezes sweeping down from the mountain. There's also an air conditioning unit for exceptionally hot days.

The queen-size 'Sleep Number' Select Comfort brand bed adjusts so each of you can sleep comfortably, according to whether you like your mattress soft or firm. Bedside tables have reading lamps, radio/alarm clock, and a wide selection of books, magazines and travel information.

A separate dressing area in an adjacent room is outfitted with full-size dresser, hangers and shelving, large mirror, and a luggage rack. There's a writing table here for you and a notebook filled with information on all there is to see and do on the island.

The bathroom is a sunny space with a beautiful stone tile shower and stone tile floor; it's stocked with all the basics (plush towels, shower gel & hand soap, hair-dryer, TP, kleenex, etc.) and features a second door leading directly out to the pool.

A small but efficient kitchen is well-equipped with refrigerator, microwave, hotplate, toaster, blender, electric coffee grinder and coffeemaker. Dishes, flatware, beverage and wine glasses, cooking pots and pans, cooking and serving tools, cooking oil, wine & beer openers, coffee filters, bottled water, paper towels, salt & pepper, sugar, napkins, dish soap, towels, etc., are all in place. Additional cooking facilities are on the lanai just outside the sliding glass doors on a gas grill with separate burner for frying, boiling or sauteeing. This is, after all, Hawaii and we do most of our living outdoors!

You can choose to dine poolside under the patio table umbrella or inside at your cozy table for two.

Your own swimming pool, surrounded by palms, bromeliads, banana trees and other tropical plants, is just steps from your door. Chaise lounges, sun umbrella, table and chairs make a quiet day relaxing by the pool a great option if you want a break from all the other activities available to you on the Big Island. Evening here is softly lit by tiki torches and a string of lights under the eaves; for an absolutely memorable experience, pause to enjoy a glowing orange sun setting on the Pacific or the vast Hawaiian night sky studded with stars seeming so close you could touch them.

Hale Polu Lani is a perfect romantic getaway for honeymooners!

The closest beach, on palm-lined Honomalino Bay, is a short hike from the village of Miloli'i; it has great snorkeling, spinner dolphin, sea turtles, and the occasional migrating whale. Quiet and serene, truly off the beaten path, you're likely to be the only ones on this local black sand beach. Other beaches nearby include Hookena where caves and pristine reefs offer exceptional snorkel adventures, 'Two-Step' at Kealakekua Bay, the Black Sand Beach at Punalu'u, and Green Sand Beach at South Point, a marvel in hue and isolation.

Snorkel gear, beach towels, chairs and a cooler are available (at no charge) for your personal use during your stay at Hale Polu Lani.

Well situated on the west side of the island on the South Kona Coast, halfway between Kona and Volcanoes National Park, the cottage is located an hour's drive from Kona and approx. 2 hours from Hilo and the east side of the island. We're a short drive from a number of coffee farms offering free tours and tastings. Other notable sites nearby include Pu'uhonua O Honaunau (Place of Refuge), the Painted Church, Captain Cook monument, and Amy Greenwell's Ethnobotanical Gardens.

We are here on-site (our house is next door to the cottage) to offer a friendly welcome and personal recommendations as well as provide for any special needs you may have. We do, however, respect your privacy (it's quite possible you won't even see us during your visit -- if you choose not to!) and you can consider the cottage and pool your own while you're here.

E komo mai! Welcome to our ohana!

The sunny South Kona Coast has some of Hawaii's best bays and reefs for snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and fishing. Colorful reef fish are varied and plentiful. The western coast of the Big Island is also home to sea turtles, spinner dolphin and migrating whales.

Coffee plantations dot the mountainside with tasting rooms at regular intervals along the highway. The history and importance of Big Island coffee farming is artfully explained at Greenwell Farms. Amy Greenwell's Ethnobotanical Gardens are nearby.

The drive down the coast from the airport to Milolii treats you to a variety of island environments, expansive ocean views, lava fields and a nature reserve.

This part of the island is also home to a lively arts community (SKEA) with many galleries, live theater and craft fairs. Farmers markets, where local growers bring fresh pineapple, coconuts, papaya, mango, mac nuts, and other fresh produce, are held daily up and down the Kona Coast; these are also excellent opportunities to find authentic artisan crafts using local koa wood and other natural elements of the island. Antique shops are rich in Hawaiiana. Great restaurants and roadside cafes are easy to find.

The south end of the Big Island is home to dramatic cliffs and rocky coastlines. World-famous Punalu'u Black Sand Beach and fascinating Green Sand Beach at South Point are just a couple of stops you'll want to include in your itinerary. Quaint Na'alehu is the southernmost town in the U.S. and boasts a great bakery.

A must-see for everyone visiting the Big Island is Volcanoes National Park. Plan on spending at least two days exploring this natural wonder with its other-worldly landscapes, caves, steaming calderas and active lava flows. Seeing fiery red molten lava falling into the dark blue surf of the Pacific ocean at night is a stunning and memorable experience. Entrance to the park is an easy 75-minute drive from Miloli'i.

Hale Polu Lani is located in the Hawaiian countryside -- you'll pass an avocado orchard and a macadamia nut farm on your 1-mile drive down Miloli'i Road to our home. Our closest 'town' is the village of Miloli'i, an ancient fishing village and still one of the best deep-sea fishing areas in the Islands.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2012

About the owner: My husband and I are originally from Minnesota and Iowa, but have also lived in northern California. We first visited Hawaii 20 years ago on our honeymoon, spending the majority of our time on Maui and the Big Island. When the opportunity presented itself last year we leapt at the chance to move here permanently.

Why the Owner Chose Milolii:
We wanted something away from town, in a quiet, more rural area, off the beaten path, with some land around us. An ocean view was a must! Our idea of 'night life' is watching the sun set over the big blue Pacific, scanning the ocean for passing whales, enjoying dinner on the lanai and, later, star-gazing into Hawaii's amazingly vast night sky. We love the pool and all the tropical plants. Being avid gardeners and home improvement veterans, we relished the opportunity to put our own stamp on this place. That we could also welcome guests to our little piece of paradise is a great bonus. We love sharing our experiences of the island, offering restaurant recommendations, and helping visitors make the most of their time on the Big Island. The cottage is a stand-alone ohana/guest house on our property, adjacent to the main house where we reside. My husband and I are here to help if you need or want it, otherwise you're on your own; we respect your privacy. This is your vacation!

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
This is a very diverse island, where one can experience nearly every earthly climate. Here, on the southwest slopes of Mauna Loa, at approx. 1200 feet above sea level, we're perfectly situated to enjoy the best of the Kona Coast's warm, sunny days, consistently cooling tradewinds and clear, star-filled nights.
