Come sit on the upstairs lanai with an 180-degree view of the ocean and watch the sun rise and set. Enjoy our lush gardens, the trade winds, and sound of the surf pounding on nearby lava cliffs, and the far off cry of whales during the months of December through April. Some have called this coastline and walk along the famous Red Road, where spinner dolphins and turtles can be sighted, one of the more beautiful sights in the islands.
Our local black sand beach is a short 15-minute walk. There you can bask in the sun, snorkel, swim, and in the early morning enjoy a respectful romp with dolphins. A 20-minute walk to the east is a retreat center which provides delicious vegetarian food, yoga, and occasional classes in hula and other Hawaiian subjects, all in an expansive tropical setting.
Ahalanui Beach Park, where the warm (90 degrees F) geothermal tide pond is a comfortable place to swim or just soak and relax, is a 15-minute drive to the east. When you drive ten minutes to the west you reach the end of the road, Kalapana. Breakfast or lunch is available at a local spot. It is yummy! You can take a short walk over the old lava flow to see the new beach that is forming (not for swimming), where many of us have planted coconut palms.
The nearest town, Pahoa, was founded in 1908 to mill ties for the Santa Fe Railroad. Wooden sidewalks still exist. The town is funky and fun with some great restaurants: Mexican, Thai, Tuscany Italian, burgers, natural foods, take-out Chinese, and a fresh fish store. On Sundays there is an extensive food and "stuff" market about ten minutes north of Pahoa.
Our home is comfortable, bright, and spacious. In this solar-powered house we do not provide TV or a DVD/VCR set up. But, do you need that in this gorgeous setting? The electrical system does not allow for appliances producing great amounts of heat, such as hair dryers, toasters, and irons. You know, the native islanders did not use those either. However, you can plug in your computer, charge batteries for cameras and shavers, and enjoy our wonderful selection of CDs and tapes on our stereo system.
Please come to this wonderful area and enjoy our warm and beautiful home which you will find filled with anthurium.
Rates for children are the same as those for adults. In the event of an earlier departure than originally arranged, no refund will be given. Local telephone calls may be made at no charge. Long distance and inter-island calls require the use of a credit or calling card.
