Burdett cottage description

A rustic 100 year old Craftsmans style cottage, nestled in the woods, built on a bluff overlooking Seneca Lake, with 100 + ft of shore for enjoying fun activities on the lake. Create wonderful summer memories, with campfires, swimming, sipping local wines, fishing, kayaking, BBQ's, & more. There is a dock, so if you have a boat, you may want to bring it along. A boat can be launched from Watkins Glen marina, or from a park in Hector. This is a small cottage, that will sleep up to 4 people and 1 well behaved dog. My maximum capacity is 5 people & not more.

While, I think my lake property is perfectly wonderful...It's important that you're happy there, so I must be honest with pluses and negatives....

As for negatives... a bumpy gravel road, assessable for most cars (exception: low to the ground sports cars) leads 1/2 mile down hill and through the woods. When you get to the lake, parking is limited to one or two cars. The cottage is adorable but vintage, with an old kitchen, an old bathroom with claw foot tub with low water pressure shower. There's no air conditioning, so when it gets hot, as it does in July and August, you will use electric fans and swim in the lake to cool down. When it gets cold, there are small electric heaters and lots of blankets. There are no TV channels, no internet, no phone, and a steep path to the lake shore.

On the plus side, the setting is amazing, in the woods, private, with a fabulous lake view. While the cottage is authentic vintage and quaint, it has the basic comforts of home, with frig, stove, microwave, coffee maker, etc. Although there's a kitchen, most of your meals will be enjoyed outdoors, with your choice of gas or charcoal grill. The lake shore is hard to beat, with a dock for fishing and sun bathing, a large beach for swimming, and a picnic table with charcoal BBQ. You might also enjoy camp fires, tent camping, volleyball, watching sunsets while drinking local wine, and exploring the lakeshore in 2 kayaks.

          • Guests Provide Their Own Meals

          • Children Welcome:

One or two children are okay. Younger kids often enjoy the lake more then older ones, who might prefer computer and television more then spending time outdoors. ...moreless

          • Non Smoking Only
          • Pets Considered:

I'm not opposed to guests with one dog. The neighbors have dogs, and they get upset when my puppy visits and begs for food. An dog that's well behaved, stays inside, or by your side, would be okay....moreless

          • Wheelchair Inaccessible:

The terrain is rocky with a steep path leading down to the lake, and the cottage has stairs, so unfortunately, it's not good for wheelchairs....moreless

Bedrooms: 3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 5, Beds for 4-5

          • Bedroom 2: 1 king

Bedroom upstairs - lake view,1 antique dresser & wall hooks...moreless

main floor - creek view, full size bed, hooks for clothes...moreless

          • The main floor has one bedroom with full size bed. All bedrooms are small with no closets and few dressers. Hooks on walls are handy for lake attire of blue jeans, shorts, t-shirts, & bathing suits. The first floor bedroom has a window over looking lake and creek that's wonderful to listen to when flowing after a rain. If weather's dry, there's no water in the creek....moreless

          Bathrooms: 1 Bathroom

          • Bathroom 1: toilet, combination tub/shower, tub

          • The cottage only has one upstairs vintage bathroom, with an antique claw foot bathtub and wrap around shower curtain. Living in the cottage is somewhat like camping. While a shower is possible, the water pressure might not be what you're used to. Sometimes, I take a towel, soap & shampoo to the lake. There is no laundry, but there's a laundry in Watkins if you need one. ...moreless

          Other Amenities

              • The cottage has plenty of character and charm, however, it's basic vintage and not updated. It was built in the early 1900's. There's running water and electric, however, some say staying here, is like camping. There's a TV, but no cable, so only DVD's can be watched. Internet is possible if you have a wireless Verizon MI-Fi and Verizon cell phones work fine. This is a wooded retreat for those who love nature, want to relax, and spend most of their time outdoors on the lake. Attractions and Activities beyond fishing, boating & swimming, include the area gorges located in Watkins Glen State Park and Taughnnock Falls State Park, the Ithaca Farmers Market, Wagner’s Winery Pub Night (Dancing on the Deck), Pickin’ in the Pasture Bluegrass Concert, The Glen Theater, Watkins Glen International Race Track, the Corning Glass Museum, The Rockwell Museum of Western Art, & Cornell University....moreless

TV with 'NO' Cable so there are no channels, however, I have a large collection of DVD movies so there's plenty to watch....moreless

                  Car: Necessary

Our cottage is located a 1/2 mile down a gravel drive that winds through the woods. It's assessable to most cars, with exceptions of low to the ground sports cars. A corvette would have a difficult time with the road. The wooded setting provides privacy, however, there are other cottages next door, so you won't feel isolated. Lake cottages are quiet during the week but busy on the weekends with boating and family activities. The Wine Trail is just up the hill, along Route 414, on both sides of the lake, with plenty of wineries and restaurants to explore. Watkins Glen, 7 miles from the cottage, has a beautiful Glen Gorge to hike through, a race track, shops, restaurants & a small cinema. While there are things to do...this is a great place to relax, with sunsets, campfires, BBQ's, fishing, kayaking, swimming, sunbathing, or reading a book while you lay in a hammock on the lake shore.

NOTE: Because the cottage is small, it's comfortable for 2 - 4 guests. My maximum capacity is 5 guests and perhaps 1 well behaved doggie. Please do not plan large parties. There is only parking for one or two cars and the old septic can provide for only the maximum number for guests.

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 1985

About the owner: My name is Connie. I live in the mountains of N.C., but I look forward to spending my summers on Seneca lake. I grew up on a small farm, just up the hill from the cottage. The farm is still in the family, so that's where I'll be while you're at the cottage. Your privacy is important so I'll leave you alone, but if you need me, I can be there in a jiffy.

                  Why the Owner Chose Burdett:
This is not a destination for those who want a wild night life or high tech conveniences. It's a special place to wind down, relax, enjoy nature and simple country life, while tucked in the woods. Plan for lots of swimming, fishing and sunbathing. BBQ's & picnics are wonderful as food tastes better outdoors.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Enjoy fresh air, lake breezes, sunshine, local wines, cookouts, a vintage cottage tucked in the woods, campfires, and gorgeous sunsets almost every night. Kick back and relax on the shores of Seneca Lake. It will be a summer vacation you will never forget.
