St John is a lush volcanic island, with a chain of hills, mountains and valleys that stretches almost the entire length of the island and separates the north side from the south side. The mountains grow taller as you approach the Coral Bay area, and it’s here that Bayview is located. Sitting about 1000 feet above the Caribbean Sea, Bayview is nestled into a very private and cozy setting on a spectacular mountaintop. The dramatic primary views extend far to the east, overlooking Coral Bay and the east end of St. John, with the British Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Sea on the distant horizon. Bordeaux Mountain dominates the expansive view to the south, while the view to the north and west captures St John’s famous north shore national park, with Francis and Maho Bays and the British island of Jost Van Dyke in the distance. Many rental homes offer fetching views of Coral Bay, but only a handful of homes are mountaintop and also offer fabulous views of the north shore and Jost Van Dyke. This is such a great location that it’s easy to spend the entire day at Bayview, but the calm turquoise waters and National Park beaches at Maho Bay and Francis Bay are an easy 4-7 minute drive. Cruz Bay is a 15-minute drive along Centerline Road, or slightly longer if you take the exceptionally scenic drive along the north shore, past Maho, Cinnamon, Trunk, and Hawksnest Bays. If you head off to the east, the restaurants and bars of Coral Bay are a 5 – 10 minute drive.
Our house is an attractive traditional design with two buildings that are connected by three decks and patios. You park on the upper level and enter into a private garden patio that runs along the north side of the main house. This north patio is sheltered from the tradewinds and is ideal for quiet dining, beautiful north shore views and exceptionally private full body tanning. Off the patio is the one-level main house which contains the living/dining rooms and kitchen, plus a covered deck which runs along the south side of the house and offers spectacular views. The 2-level building beside the main house contains an upper and a lower level bedroom, both with tiled baths. A large, sun deck adjoins the pool, which is located on the lower level. The pool deck is also quite private with a southern exposure that insures all day sun.
The tiled master bedroom (king bed) is located on the upper level, with wonderful down island views. Large screened windows, ceiling fans and the trade winds insure restful sleep in a comfortably cool environment. The tiled second bedroom is located at pool level and contains two twin beds that convert to a king (shown in photo). Both bathrooms are fully tiled with showers. The master bedroom also contains an iPod dock
In the great room there are twelve doors and windows which create a bright, well ventilated and open interior with stunning views from inside or outside the house. The tiled living room has a cathedral ceiling and is furnished with wicker and rattan furniture, Caribbean flavored artwork and other accessories. For your listening/viewing pleasure there is a 32” flat screen TV with DVD, a stereo/CD, a large collection of DVDs and CDs, plus high speed wireless from a satellite dish. A washer and dryer are located in the laundry room. For dining, you can dine inside at the countertop bar-table, or outside on the Coral Bay covered deck or on the cozy and romantic garden patio. The kitchen is well equipped, including a microwave oven, electric stove and oven, toaster, coffee maker, blender, pots and pans, and assorted kitchenware. A gas BBQ grill, telephone and beach chairs are also included.

About: Like a lot of the homeowners we have met on St John, we’ve had a long-term love affair with this island. We’re from Massachusetts and to us everything about St. John - its history, people, weather, tropical beauty, unspoiled and beautiful landscapes, the National Park and on and on – is magic. We fell in love - with a genuine passion - for St. John, so we decided to look around and buy some land to build on. When we looked at this lot, we went from loving not just the island, but to also loving our special place on this island.
Before we built our home we had the site thoroughly surveyed, and then the house was carefully built, exactly on the top of the mountain ridgeline that separates the north and south sides of St. John. Pardon our lack of modesty, but our design beautifully captures the ridgeline’s spectacular near 360-degree panoramic views, and to borrow a phrase from Robert Frost, - that has made all the difference. Winters in Massachusetts aren’t our cup of tea, so we spend a lot of time in Bayview and we’re always working on one project or another. We love to cook, so we pay particular attention to the kitchen and its cooking accessories. We love music and reading, so there’s a fine selection of both in Bayview. But mostly we love this house, so we spend most of our island time maintaining and improving it. It’s what we love to do and it keeps us, and our guests, quite happy.
Why Coral Bay: There are a lot of villas that have good views of Coral Bay, but Bayview has a truly great view that also includes Francis Bay and the famed North Shore of St. John, and that makes it real special.
We’re huge fans of this spot in Coral Bay and not just for the views, but also because we abut the National Park and the Park is a very good neighbor that insures a natural, undisturbed and very private ambience. It’s refreshing (no pun intended) to wear whatever you want, or nothing at all, without concern for the eyes and opinions of others. There’s a lot to be said for visual privacy in a warm tropical setting, and dressing the way you were born.
Despite our privacy, we’re only about a 5-minute drive from Maho Beach, which almost always offers excellent swimming and snorkeling in very calm, crystal clear waters. Maho is particularly inviting after 4 PM when the sun worshipers have left and you have the beach and the Bay much to yourself – thank God for this National Park.
Bayview is not only closer to the beaches than most Coral Bay homes, it’s also a lot closer to groceries and fun times in Cruz Bay. We’re 15-minutes from Cruz Bay with one of us driving, but probably 20 minutes for you, especially if you take the amazingly scenic north shore drive
The Unique Benefits at this Villa: It’s not entirely accurate to say that we have a one of a kind view, for there are a couple of other homes that also sit along this ridgeline. But our views are both very uncommon and quite beautiful, even by St. John’s high standards.
But Bayview is much more than just a pretty view; this house has two distinct personalities, north and south. The south side of the house has the trade winds, the pool, a covered deck and a sundeck with sun all day, and huge, magnificent views of sunrises, mountains, islands and sapphire blue seas. The north side is sheltered from the trade winds; it’s quiet, cozy, romantic and very private, with lovely views of St. John’s renowned north shore national park. One house, but it feels like two.
In a tropical environment there’s always something that needs attention, and constant attention to detail distinguishes this home from many others. Owning a vacation home in the tropics is like having a child; it requires constant love and attention, especially as it gets older. For us this is not a problem; it's an inherently rewarding endeavor that we enjoy doing together.
Bayview isn’t the only St John villa that has an especially warm, cozy and romantic essence; we’ve just got more of it. We can’t count how many honeymooners, couples and families have had a romantic vacation on this mountain, but it’s a lot. We also know from our own years of lovely winter days and soft summer nights at Bayview – “there is magic here.”
