Yachats, known as the “Gem of the Oregon Coast”, is adjacent to Cape Perpetua, which is its highest point, offering breath taking views the ocean, headlands, and forest. The town itself is also known as a friendly gathering place for artists, artisans, writers, free spirits, and lovers of nature. This community provides a rich context for anyone involved in these things. In addition to a great place for fishing and crabbing, the town offers good restaurants with live music, and festivals in spring, summer, and fall. Although the Spring, Summer and Fall are spectacularly beautiful, many come in the Winter to watch the storms come in off of the ocean. The town provides activities for children and youth, and the neighboring towns of Florence and Newport offer many recreational activities including dune buggy rides, whale watching trips, and helicopter rides. The Alsea, one of two lovely rivers near us, is particularly known for canoeing, kayaking, camping, and other recreational opportunities.
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: Linda Taylor teaches literature and writing at Oglethorpe University. She has published nearly 90 poems in a number of journals including The Georgia Review, The Kenyon Review, The Ohio Review, Black Warrior Review,…
When at the Forest Hill cottage, Linda enjoys sitting and writing on the front porch where she can hear the many variety of birds.
Lyle McCormick works as a ICF International public health data manager/analyst contractor with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although not a published writer, he says being at the cottage on Forest Hill brings him back to himself.
Why the Owner Chose Yachats: We fell in love with this cottage for its fir wood floors, which we day lighted, and it's large, old fashioned windows. We fell in love with this quaint cottage for its beautiful setting near old growth forest and both rock and sandy beach, and enjoyed the 2+ years of renovating and furnishing it. It was a creative project for us.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: Linda loves to use it as a place to work on poetry and her novel. Lyle loves the serenity of the surroundings and the rejuvenating effects of being by the ocean and the national forest. We both enjoy the walks on the 804 that we make everyday, getting breakfast at the Green Salmon coffee shop, watching the sunsets, and experiencing the local culture in this friendly, small town.
