"The SEVERN RIVER, which drains Lake Simcoe through Lake Couchiching into Georgian Bay, was known to Europeans from the earliest days of exploration and colonization in North America. The river appears on early French maps under its Huron name of Khionchiara, a word with obscure meaning but probably referring to the granite rock formation through which the river flows. To the Ojibwe nation, the river was known as Mumjedusk. The English named it SEVERN afer a river of the same name in southwestern England." (James T. Angus)
