Keywords: Private Luxery Oceanfront Studio/Suite
Ever dreamed of whiling away the afternoon gently
swinging in an ocean side hammock?
Then welcome to HALE HONU
and this beautifully romantic oceanfront studio!
Hale Honu means "House of the Sea Turtle," aptly named for the "family" of turtles frequently seen frolicking in the surf in front of the house (known locally as "turtle cove"). This very special oceanfront home is perfectly situated to offer privacy and unobstructed views the Kona coastline.
Hale Honu is a two-story, three bedroom, three bath, truly OCEANFRONT home with extraordinary views of the ocean from all rooms of the home. The home is designed with an upstairs Two bedroom/two bath main house, and a LARGE 1 BEDROOM COMPLETE STUDIO, WITH BATH, KITCHEN AND SEPARATE ENTRANCE.
This site is specifically for separate rental of the suite. The entire home can be seen at vrbo #34465.
This unique ocean front gated property is surrounded by a beautiful lava rock wall and borders Pahoehoe Beach Park (an oceanfront beach park with shaded sitting areas, grass and a small keiki (child) friendly beach). Less than a three minute walk is Magic Sands Beach Park, famous for body surfing & boogie boarding, and is a gathering place at sunset to watch the passing of another day in paradise.
On the garden/ground level is our complete PRIVATE SUITE with a separate, secured entrance, outdoor garden, dining and relaxing areas. This large (650+ square feet) living space includes a heavenly king-size bed romantically shrouded in privacy sheers, and a comfortable living room with new tropical decor, perfect for entertaining or snuggling (!).
The suite has a complete kitchen with cook-top and refrigerator. The bathroom is luxuriously designed with marble tile and glass block, and a large shower containing dual shower heads, (for sharing of course!). Also, this suite has a large sitting area, and a separate dining room. Windows and sliders encompass all of the makai (ocean side) walls, so you can simply let the ocean air in, or step out and be right at the ocean’s edge.
Our home is located just four miles south of the heart of Kailua-Kona village, and two miles north of the Keauhou shopping and cinema complex. Hale Honu is close to everything but is in a world of it's own!
The grounds of the property are nicely landscaped and totally private, enclosed within six foot lava stone walls on three sides, opening to the Big Blue Pacific on the makai side. There are many comfortable places to sit and bask outside in the sun, or relax in the shade of the palms and tropical greenery. An antique bench from Thailand rests in a romantic shaded sitting area just at the ocean's edge, or just swing in the ocean side hammock under the shade of palm trees.
When the sea is calm, snorkelers can explore the abundant reef and arches directly in front of the house; the ocean can be entered and exited from the lava outcropping on site when the surf is low. You can also enter the ocean from the adjacent beach.
You will likely get a visit from our resident turtle family! A large lava shelf has excellent tidal pools for exploring at low tide. Also, Pahoehoe Beach Park is adjacent to the property(see above).
Ocean side lounges are provided, as is a full sized laundry room.
We strive to make our homes and your experience in them unique and filled with the spirit of aloha. You’ll find the home tastefully decorated, carefully maintained, and filled with lots of little extras (CD collection of Hawaiian music, binoculars, books on local history and cultural sites, etc.)
This home imbues a special feeling of Peace and Aloha to everyone who visits it, and it is with that Aloha that we welcome you!
Please Note... We do offer this property for vacation rental in three different ways:
* Entire Home (including studio for a full three bedrooms and three baths)
* Upstairs Only(two bedrooms and two baths)
* SUITE ONLY (one bedroom and one bath)
When the Suite and upper floor are rented to different parties, mutual respect of designated outdoor spaces assures privacy for everyone.
THE CALENDAR LINKED TO THIS SITE SHOWS AVAILABILITY OF THE STUDIO ONLY. To check on availability of the upper floor, follow the link to Hale Honu below, and scroll down to the availability calendar. (vrbo #34465)

Luxury Oceanfront Studio ~ Walk to Beach ~ Hot Tub on Ocean!
Why the Owner Chose Other Kailua-Kona Properties
You'll know the first thirty seconds that you stand on the sea wall and gaze over the ocean why we chose Hale Honu. Amazing. Paradise. Perfect... were our first thoughts. It continues to feel the same every day even after seven years.
The Unique Benefits at this Studio
Peacefulness. With the constant pulse of the ocean, palm fronds swaying and clacking in the off shore breezes, laying in a hammock or soaking in the spa under star studded skies a few feet from the breaking waves is "just what the doctor ordered" for your "cares of the world" to vanish for a while. We all need "down-time" in which we can just breathe and let our bodies and minds relax and rejuvinate. If that is what you want in a real Hawaiian Vacation, you need look no further, you'll find it here, and more, at Hale Honu.
Arguably the best snorkeling in the Hawaiian Islands, protected cove
Along the slopes of Hualalai, visit the plantations that grow the world's best coffee.
Owner's Map of Other Kailua-Kona Properties
This is us, Peter and Darla. We bought our first oceanfront condo (KKSR # 186) in 2002, on our first visit to the Big Island. (The Big Island definitely hooked us after several trips to the other islands!) We have been blessed to now offer four homes in Kona, including Hale Honu which we purchased in 2004. There is something about this particular spot on the ocean that everyone feels when they first walk on the site...maybe the turtles living in the cove, the spinner dolphins swimming by daily, or the calving humpbacks off shore every winter, but for us it was totally love at first sight. We have been improving Hale Honu every year, with major remodeling completed in 2008. We have a semi-permanent presence on the Big Island managing our Bed and Breakfast in Kona, The Hawaiian Oasis. Both of us are physicians, with continuing practices in California. We have a large extended family (everyone loves each other!) and three grown children...a fine arts painter, a photographer/film maker, and a fashion designer. We employ a full time employee and a handy man service in Kona to take care of all maintenance issues when we are on the mainland.

My husband and I stayed in this magical house right on the water. any closer you would be on a boat... Sleeping to the sound of the waves in a most romantic studio ( ground floor of a one story house) was exactly what we had dreamed of. Initially we thought we would have diner out every night but it felt so good that we end up cooking at home a few times. Peter had given us such great advice on local life and activities that followed his advice and had great experiences each time. Thanks for providing everything from beach towels, snorkeling, outdoor furniture etc.. I highly recommend it for people in needs of a break . great for big families also as you can then rent the upstairs as well

We brought the entire family to Kona for Christmas this year (kids, spouses and grandchild) and it was our best vacation ever! We rented the studio for our son, wife and baby while the rest of us took over the upstairs. That gave them the privacy and quiet (for naps) that they needed. I can't say enough about the view and sound of crashing waves 24-7, it makes you want to rush home from shopping/sightseeing just to sit on the deck and soak it in. The house has everything you could possibly need and Peter & Darla are a pleasure to work with. We hope to be in contact with them in the future for our next trip to Kona.

Our visit to Hale Honu was relaxing, beautiful, and met our expectations. We found that sightseeing was very enjoyable and convenient from this location. We thoroughly enjoyed watching the turtles. They were so active, as were the beautiful little birds on the property. We were also pleased with the proximity to the farmers market. The fruit and flowers were wonderful! Our favorite resturant was Kona Brewing Co. as had been recomended. Fun place! We would recomend that directions to places on the island be more precise and detailed. (At least that would have helped us.) We can't wait to visit again. Wayne wanted to go back in June!!!
Owner response:It's a BIG island with so much to see! We'll review our locals guide to make it more precise. Mahalo for your stay and compliments. It is always our pleasure to share our piece of Paradise with visitors to this wonderful island. Peter and Darla

We recently (March 26-Apr 2, 2010) stayed in the full Hale Honu house with two families (7 people) and thoroughly enjoyed the house, the area, and the island (drove nearly 700 miles sight seeing!). Peter and Darla have put together a very good place to stay that puts you in close touch with the sights and sounds of the Big Island. This home is close enough to Kailua-Kona to easily be there when you want but not so close that you have to deal with crowds or traffic (at least we did not).We saw many turtles, fish, and crab playing/foraging in front of the house (literally a few feet away!) and enjoyed watching whales, surfers, fishing, sailing, and a cruise ship all from the house. Just a short walk away are three different places to swim, snorkel, body surf, long board surf, or sun bathe to your desire. A good place that has given us very good memories. Mahalo.

Peter & Darla, Thank you so much for allowing us to stay at your "beachside bungalow" - it was absolutely incredible. Also thanks a million for stocking the fridge - once we arrived we never wanted to leave so I got to whip up my famous French toast and have breakfast on the lanai. We didn't get much sleep because we just had to do the late night star viewing on the hammock. We had a fantastic time and really enjoyed the ocean view. Hope we returned everything back to the original places and left the fridge with enough goodies for the next person. Would love to stay at one of your fine lodgings again soon and will DEFINITELY recommend you to our friends and coworkers. Everything worked great by the way, no issues with the gate or anything. Thanks again for everything - it was perfect. Chris and Amanda

Peter and Darla, At the risk of repeating things that you have probably heard a billion times, our stay was amazing. The wedding, and sharing of such treasured memories by both families will never be forgotten. For some, it will probably be the last trip of it's kind, for others it will inspire the motivation to broaden their traveling experiences. On the last day that we were all together on the patio, whales displayed their entire body from the water, followed by several tail slapping maneuvers, unlike any that our visitors had seen, even on the boat tours. My nephews and nieces keep comparing this trip to those they have taken since "That was fun, but no Hawaii!" We can not say enough in thanks for the opportunity to stay at your home for such a special time in our lives. Mahalo, Ryan & Marie Polito

With the help of Darla and Peter, our visit to Hale Honu was perfect. Once we decided to go to Hale Honu making the booking was very straightforward. Darla and Peter were able to accommodate our needs and even gave us tips on where to go for dinner and places to visit. Thank Darla and Peter for making our stay so wonderful. We stayed in the studio on the property, which is located just outside of the main tourist area of Kona. It is well situated and literally next door to a small sandy beach. It is only a few minutes drive to the heart of Kona and a 5 minute drive to a small shopping mall where you can find a grocery store, post office and other stores. The studio was well laid out and had wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean. Waking up to this view each morning was a magnificent way to start each day during our stay in Kona. The studio was well appointed in terms of conveniences. The kitchen was sufficient that it enabled us to prepare meals on days we did not wish to leave our beautiful surroundings. Darla and Peter make beach chairs, beach towels, snorkel equipment and a cooler available to their guests. These items certainly helped to make our stay more enjoyable. It’s not very often that you can go on vacation and have access to all the conveniences of home. The lanai for the studio was a wonderful place to eat breakfast, or any meal for that matter. It was also a place where we were able to lounge, read or just relax if we didn’t feel like setting off for a destination. Beyond the lanai is nothing but the blue perfection of the ocean. What more could one ask for than to sit and watch turtles float just beneath the cool surface of the ocean. Our visit to Hale Honu was certainly one of the most relaxing vacations we’ve ever had and we plan to return at the earliest possible opportunity. August 2008Jayne & Rob

We stayed at the Hale Honu studio in September 2008 and enjoyed the daily turtle visits and beautiful sunsets each night. The studio is beautifully furnished and you can see the ocean from any place in the studio. The only downside is the cooking is limited to a two burner stove top and a toaster oven. In addition, the people renting the larger unit above us did not respect our privavcy and went into the hammock and lanai area for the studio while we were reading in the studio. They were loud and this "sharing" of the property with another couple made us uncomfortable. The second family shared the property without intrusion.I believe renting the top floor and studio for a large family would be perfect. The price, location and view is great. Just think how much privavcy you require, We had to close many blinds so the people above us could not watch us from the upstairs windows.
