Hale Honu is a two-story, 4 bedroom, 3 bath, truly OCEANFRONT home with spectacular, unobstructed views of the ocean from every room of the home. Hale Honu is designed with an upstairs 3 bedroom/two bath main house, and a LARGE 1 BEDROOM COMPLETE STUDIO, WITH BATH, KITCHEN AND SEPARATE PRIVATE ENTRANCE.

This unique ocean front gated property is surrounded by a beautiful lava rock wall and borders Pahoehoe Beach Park (an oceanfront beach park with shaded sitting areas, grass and a small keiki (child) friendly beach). With less than a three minute walk to Magic Sands (aka 'Disappearing Sands) State Beach Park, a sugar white sand beach popular for bodysurfing & boogie boarding, Hale Honu is the closest oceanfront home to the best beach within 5 miles of Kailua-Kona village. On the garden/ground level is our complete PRIVATE SUITE with a separate, secured entrance, oceanfront private covered lanai and garden hammock, and private oceanfront sitting and dining area. The large (650+ square feet) living space includes a heavenly king-size bed romantically shrouded in privacy sheers, and a living-sitting room with comfortable tropical décor furnishings and flat screen TV. The suite has a complete kitchen with cook-top and refrigerator. The bathroom is luxuriously appointed with marble tile and glass block, and a large walk in shower containing dual shower heads, (for sharing of course!). Windows and sliders encompass all of the makai (ocean side) walls, so you can simply let the ocean air in, or step out and be right at the edge of 2500 miles of unbroken Pacific Ocean blue!
Our large hot tub also at the ocean's edge is a unique experience! The hot tub and BBQ are in an outdoor common area of the property.
Hale Honu is located just 3.5 miles south of the heart of Kailua-Kona village, and two miles north of the Keauhou beach shopping and cinema complex. Hale Honu is close to everything but is in a world of its own!
The grounds of the property are nicely landscaped and totally private, enclosed within six foot lava stone walls on three sides, opening to the Big Blue Pacific on the makai (ocean) side. There are many comfortable places to sit and bask outside in the sun, or relax in the shade of the palms and tropical greenery. When the sea is calm, snorkelers can explore the abundant reef and arches directly in front of the house; the ocean can be entered and exited from the lava outcropping on site when the surf is low or you can also enter the ocean from Pahoehoe Beach, right next to Hale Honu. You will likely get a visit from our resident turtle family when snorkeling! All pictures of sea life on this website were taken in the waters right in front of Hale Honu. Pahoehoe beach park also has a large lava shelf with excellent tidal pools for exploring at low tide.
Ocean side padded chaise lounges are provided. We have a separate laundry room for your convenience, and provide you with beach towels, rice mats, beach chairs and umbrellas, coolers and some snorkeling gear and boogie boards.

Please Note... We do offer Hale Honu for vacation rental in three different ways: * Entire Home (including studio for a full four bedrooms and three baths) * Upstairs Only (3 bedrooms and 2 baths) * STUDIO/SUITE ONLY (one bedroom and one bath). We will generally not release the studio only during peak seasons if the main house is not yet booked. When the Suite and upper floor are rented to different parties, mutual respect of designated outdoor spaces assures privacy for everyone.

About the owner: This is us, Peter and Darla. We bought our first oceanfront condo (KKSR # 186) in 2002, on our first visit to the Big Island. (The Big Island definitely hooked us after several trips to the other islands!) We have been blessed to now offer four homes in Kona, including Hale Honu which we purchased in 2004. There is something about this particular spot on the ocean that everyone feels when they first walk on the site...maybe the turtles living in the cove, the spinner dolphins swimming by daily, or the calving humpbacks off shore every winter, but for us it was totally love at first sight. We have been improving Hale Honu every year, with major remodeling completed in 2008. We have a semi-permanent presence on the Big Island managing our Bed & Breakfast in Kona, The Hawaiian Oasis. Both of us are physicians, with continuing practices in California. We have a large extended family, three grown children...a fine arts painter, a photographer/film maker, and a fashion designer, and a growing family of pugs! We employ a full time employee and a handy man service in Kona to take care of all maintenance issues when we are on the mainland.
