About: Steve and Penny own the Ranch House. Penny is the daughter of Ray and Ruth Lewis who started the Ranch in 1966. We have 5 children, the oldest being Doug who is severely handicapped but enjoys the ranch in his own way. We have two additional boys and two girls. 3 are married with the second oldest who is a boy enjoys working at the Resort during the peak season and a canyoneering guide. We live in Ephraim, Utah about a 3 1/2 hour drive from the Ranch (3 hrs if Penny is driving her 335i). Myself and Penny are graduates of Brigham Young University, Penny with her BS degree and myself with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. I practice full time in Ephraim. Todd is a Pharmacist in Utah County, Britni is taking care of her challenging 3 yr old and her husband is a nurse working at Primary Children's Medical Center. Eric is the living the 'good life' as he puts it, attending Snow College and working at the Ranch during the summer. Carol, the youngest, is living in Florida with her husband who is playing college football.
Why Zion National Park:
When Ray and Ruth Lewis purchased the 4500 acres Penny was in her preteen years. He initially was able to get a loan for the Ranch and started selling lots. He and his wife Ruth worked hard and were industrious in building up the ranch. Penny would spend her summers with her parents at the Ranch while growing up. After marrying Steve in 1978, they both spent a lot of time helping Penny's parents maintain the property and also enjoy the opportunities which the Ranch provided in terms hiking, biking, motor sports and of course enjoying the park. Both Ray and Ruth are deceased and the land is now owned by several of their Grandchildren who developed the resort. Building the mountain home started in 1996 and was completed in 2000. When it isn't rented the family often gathers at the mountain home and enjoys the beauty of the area and all the fun things there are to do. The property is unique in that in borders the park for many miles along what is known as the East Rim Trail. A favorite hike is to do the 'top down' hikes of Observation Point and Echo Canyon. An out and back favorite is Cable Mountain where the pioneers of the area would log the ponderosa pine on the mesa and lower the lumber to the canyon floor with a system of cables and timber, thus 'Cable mountain'. Our two boys worked and one still works taking canyoneering tours on the upper property. On their days off time is spent canyoneering famous trails such as Mystery Canyon, Pine Creek, The Subway, Englesteds and the many other canyons which are not challenging as those noted. More details and pictures can be accessed at zionscabin.com, a website maintained by Steve.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
For many years before the Resort was even an idea, I would visit the place where the home now sits and make plans, walk off the area, and say 'someday I will build a home here'. Eventually that dream came true with the inception of the resort which brought a better source of water and electricity. Prior to that time a generator provided electrical needs but after it was turned off in the evening, light was provided by propane lights and the frig was propane. The frig was one royal pain to keep going as periodically it needed to be 'burped'. This required turning it upside down for a while and then right side up and hope it would start. At night we would sleep on beds that were outside. The stars are brilliant without lights and you could routinely hear the coyotes howl on the ridge where the swimming pool is now placed. The coyotes have long since left the area.
