Hilo house description

Perched above a spring-fed babbling brook on 20 private landscaped acres, the Creekside Cottage offers the peace, serenity, privacy and nature that will dissolve your city stress. Ten miles (15 minutes) from downtown Hilo, on the lush and scenic Hamakua Coast with ocean views.

Perfect for a single or couple seeking a quiet and romantic getaway. In addition to the bedroom upstairs, there's a sofa bed in the living room, so it can accommodate up to 4 guests.
1 full bathroom plus 1 half-bath.
Fully equipped kitchen.
Screened-in lanai.

There are no city lights to dim the night sky, and no traffic noise. A eucalyptus forest blocks the view of the road.

East Hawaii, the Hilo side, is the beautiful side of the island, where you'll want to spend your time when visiting the Big Island. And the Creekside Cottage is perfectly located for the most convenient access to all the spectacular sights and adventures Hawaii is famous for. (The west or Kona side is barren desert, and a 2-3 hour drive to the natural wonders.) The Creekside Cottage is just a few minutes from beautiful swimming and surfing beaches, spectacular waterfalls and botanical gardens. The most pristine snorkeling reefs and tide pools in the Pacific ocean are close by, on the easternmost point of the island. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - with the active volcano, fascinating lava tubes, and hundreds of miles of hiking trails - is also on the East side and 45 minutes from the Cottage. Stunning Akaka Falls is 5 miles away. World-famous Waipio Falls is 1 hour to the north.

About 10 miles North of Hilo, this place is located in a wonderful natural environment. There is a waterfall on the property, fruit trees. and an ocean view. It's utterly peaceful, and conveniently located for all East Island sites, including Volcanoes Park. The kitchen is complete, and includes such extras as microwave and blender. If you want, you can stay in the cottage as a getaway, without touring the sights. Either way, you won't be disappointed by this bargain rental. The owners are generally not available in person, although they are accessible by phone. They were exceptionally generous in not charging us for some damage that we inadvertently did. The manager of the property is a woman named Kealani. She is completely attentive to one's needs (she quickly supplied us with a needed radio-alarm), as well as fully informative regarding sightseeing, shopping, and dining. Additionally, she is a source of information regarding Hawaiian history, and a fascinating person with whom to converse. Since the information supplied on this website regarding this property is completely accurate, I only want to add that this place is the bargain rental it appears to be.

We had 9 days, so we first spent 4 nights on the Kona side, then 5 nights on the Hilo side at the Creekside Cottage. If we ever return to Big Island, we'll stay on the Hilo side for the whole trip, and hopefully at the Creekside for the whole time, too. [Kona is overrated and overpriced, and a very long way from the volcano, waterfalls and other sights. Plus, due to the prevailing winds, Kona was socked in with vog when we were there, and we both had serious allergy reactions.] So we were relieved to get to the Creekside Cottage with the fresh air and natural beauty all around. The cottage turned out to be far nicer than we expected, and nicer anything we'd seen on the island so far. The grounds are unusually beautiful - very large, open, and beautifully landscaped open area to roam, with a path down to a waterfall. We picked lillikoi fruits on the property (tip: sprinkle a little lilikoi juice on your ice cream for a taste sensation) and papayas and a pineapple, and the caretaker cut some bananas for us. The eucalyptus forest along one side of the cottage provided a dense privacy screen from any roads or headlights, and it smelled good, too. We even got to see some native Hawaiian birds in those trees. We recommend bringing binoculars. The cottage itself is beautiful. Stone tile floors (marble tiles in the downstairs bathroom), granite counters, elegant pillars and trim, lots of windows with great views, screened-in lanai. The second bathroom just off the bedroom upstairs was an extra convenience for someone who tends to get up often in the night. The cottage is very spacious, bigger than the 2 of us really needed. It's beautifully furnished, and well supplied with cookware and dishes, microwave, gas range, toaster, coffeemaker, even a blender. And it was squeky clean and well-maintained. The owner Marcy was just great in supplying us with information about sights to see (and the Creekside is centrally located for all the sights on the island). The caretaker, Kealani, met us at the property when we arrived. She's a for-real Hawaiian local, very warm and gracious, as well as knowledgeable about the island. We can't think of anything that could be improved on, actually. We highly, highly recommend this place.

To be honest, before we arrived we had serious doubts about what we might get for only $99/night. We first went to Maui for 5 days before hopping over to the big island, and on Maui we rented a nice cabin for $220/night. Then when we got to the big island and checked into the Creek Side Cottage, we were surprised - no, shocked would be more accurate - to discover that this cottage was just as nice as the cabin on Maui, for less than half the price. You hear about everything on Hawaii being overly expensive, and you sort of brace yourself for each hit to your credit card, and then you find this really great place for a surprisingly low price, and it just makes you smile. That Maui cabin was only a block from the ocean, but there were so many other houses crowded all around it that we felt a bit closed in there. This Creek Side cottage, though, felt very free and open - with all that acreage around it and no neighbors nearby, just the cows on the hillside. It was very relaxing to come back to this peaceful place in the evenings after a long day of adventures. Sure, it's not within walking distance of any beach, but it's just a few minutes drive to a number of nice, uncrowded beaches. In fact, the location of this cottage was great for us, because we wanted to see every big waterfall there was to see, do the zip lines and the lava-watching boat tour, as well as explore different parts of the volcano national park on different days - and this cottage is close to every one of those things. The cottage was super clean, the landscaping very nicely maintained, and the property was full of awesome little surprises - like wading ponds in the streams that run through the property, and a private swimming hole below their waterfall. The owner was friendly and easy to work with, and promptly answered all our zillion questions. We really liked the caretaker too - a very cool Hawaiian woman who met us at the cottage when we arrived and made us feel welcome. We highly recommend this place, and if we get a chance to return to Hawaii some day, we know where we want to stay.

Owner response: We agree, it's truly a wonderful place (that's why we purchased the property), and the location is perfect for all the sights and adventures on the Big Island. And yes, our property manager Kealani is an awesome Hawaiian lady, isn't she? We really love her. Looking forward to seeing you again some day. Ahui hou!

This adorable cottage, with its privacy and idyllic peace & quiet and ocean views, is a great example of "real" Hawaii. The Hilo side of the island, in general, is real Hawaii — far more inviting than the "kitsch of Kona" (my husband and I joked that Kona is a fake Disney-esque replica of Hawaii). We spent the first 5 days of our 10-day vacation on the Kona side, and the other 5 days on the Hilo side in the Creekside Cottage. If we had known in advance what a sweet place this is, we’d have spent our whole vacation here, and wouldn't have wasted a moment in Kona. Good thing the Kona part of our trip was at the beginning when we didn’t know any better, because if we’d gone to Kona after spending 5 days at the Creekside Cottage, it would have been such a let-down it might have spoiled our whole trip. We became quite fond of funky Hilo town (especially the farmers market!), yet we loved coming "home" to this quiet rural valley 10 miles outside of Hilo, surrounded by nature and beauty. The place is nicer in real life than in the pictures. I guess you can’t capture magic in a camera. We found it meticulously clean, carefully maintained, nicely furnished, cozy and romantic. The owner made the booking process easy. The location was perfect for us, as we divided our time between the volcano to the south and the ziplines and spectacular waterfalls just north of the property. There’s also a must-see botanical garden just a few minutes away in Onomea. The property manager, Kealani, is a native Hawaiian and member of the Kingdom of Hawaii — we learned a lot about the island and about Hawaiian culture and language talking to her. And we had a great time wandering the grounds and picking citrus fruits, avocados, lilikoi, bananas. One day we walked down to the waterfall at the bottom end of the property with a cooler, and had a delightful private picnic there. We saw crawdads in the Kapehu stream — planned on catching some for dinner one evening, but ran out of time. (Next time . . .) The listing doesn’t mention internet, and the owner didn’t guarantee it, but there is WiFi. What they have is satellite internet at their other vacation rental some distance away, with a signal booster to a router bridge at the cottage. It’s not speedy: if you have to work during your stay and you depend on high-speed internet, you’ll find it frustrating. But we found it adequate for email and such. We highly recommend this rental.

As I write this review I sadly wish I could be back at creekside. The cottage fit us perfectly. The tree lined drive and soft winds that blew through the cottage was so serene and restful. After a day of running around or going to the beach, you can just come back and listen to the frogs or birds and even the cows in the meadow behind the cottage. You can see the ocean from the breakfast nook in the morning. We had already been to 2 islands and wanted to learn about HI history plus visit the volcano and since we had 10 day we were able to see the entire island. The best times were the days we stayed in and just rested. The cotage as it's known is very spacious. The bedroom upstairs has high ceilings and always the windows were open to hear the voices of nature. If you want serenity and a place to enjoy quiet. (no neighbors above you in a condo or next to you) this is the place to be. There is a big house down from the cottage, but we never heard anyone when they were there. This place had everything you needed even saran wrap :) Fresh lemons and lime, plus other varieties of fruits. The water falls were farther from the cottage than the big house, but attainable. You have never been in a cleaner place than Creekside. When it rained you could smell the eucalyptus and every morning you smelled the gardenias outside the breakfast table. Whether your on a honeymoon or celebrating a 50th anniversary as we were, this is the place to be. Yet if we wanted some of our family to be with us there was room for more. Truly consider Creekside Cottage when you are looking for an absolutely serene and beautiful place to spend your vacation.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2011

About the owner: We're in our 60's, and this is intended to be our retirement home. Until then we're making it available for others to enjoy. Tom is a lawyer and law professor specializing in the needs of Native Americans and indigenous peoples. Marcy is a musician/songwriter and church music director, and retired psychotherapist. We're active outdoor adventurers and love wilderness backpacking, and live in the mountains of New Mexico. Though the rental income on the Hawaii property doesn't cover all the expenses, it helps a lot - so we thank you for renting it and helping us make our retirement dream come true!

                      Why the Owner Chose Hilo:
We've been visiting Hawaii 2 or 3 times a year for many years. We love all the islands, but the Big Island is our favorite because it provides so much variety - from high mountain tops to snorkel reefs, to wilderness hikes, to the active volcano. On every vacation, we always spent a couple of days looking at real estate, until our broker was like family. When we first saw this property in Dec 2010, we were riveted by its beauty. We felt instantly at home, and when we stood gazing at the lush green valley and sparkling ocean, we both knew this was the place we'd been searching for.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Having spent most of our lives in the southwestern desert, two streams and our own private waterfall is nothing short of heaven. And where else can we pick our own oranges and papayas for breakfast, and avocados for our salad? The serenity and peace, the openness of the landscape, the out-in-the-country feeling, are soothing to the heart and soul.
