- Located in a quiet neighborhood the Octopus Lair is within a three minutes walk to the beach. Large pine and palm trees populate the yard and a delightful ocean life mural boasts a large pink jelly, playful seahorse and sassy octopus on the south facing wall. The only grocery store on Tybee is right around the corner and the main area of retaurants and shops is within a seven minute walk. The marine science museum is also located within the seven minutes radius. For the lighthouse and historical museum it is best to drive or ride a bike up to the north end. ...moreless

My wife and daughter had a great stay at the Octopus Lair. We timed our trip to arrive right after Labor Day, and the timing couldn't have been better. We pretty much had the Island to ourselves. The apartment is really close to the beach, the grocery store, and Fat Tire bike rentals. We loved walking and biking everywhere. The cottage was cozy, but our family is used to cozy since we live in a small condo in the city. I really enjoyed working with Donna and I will be sure to look for the Octopus Lair's availability, or another property under her management, for our next visit.

Apartment was great . Location was perfect for biking, beach etc. One thing I would recommend is if you are staying more than a few nights bring or buy cleaning supplies as there are non available in the unit .

nice cozy apartment
nice cozy apartment
This is a small apartment, but fine for 2 people. There is a futon full size sleeper, but not really comfortable enough for adults. My 17 year old slept on it with an extra foam (provided by owner) and she managed as she is small, but probably most teens and adults would not care to sleep on it. The bed in the bedroom is comfortable. The kitchen is plenty large enough with new appliances and a small table in the corner. There was a washer/dryer in an attached room off the back of the house, which is really needed to keep towels dry. The air conditioning is a window unit, and kept the kitchen and living room area cool, but the bedroom was always warmer. A fan to set in the doorway to the bedroom to better pull the cool air in there would be helpful. We walked to the beach each day. Tybee island has a full wide public beach all along the outer side. We also visited the lighthouse and Fort Pulaski. Both were very interesting. We spent a day in Savannah, but mostly stayed on the island. We had a nice stay and would consider coming back to Tybee Island.

Manager response: Thank you for taking the time to give us your thoughts. We will be putting in a bigger futon after the Labor Day weekend, we just haven't been able to do so because the apartment has not had any vacancies! I believe this will make a huge difference for those with more than 2 guests. We will also be putting in a fan, as per your recommendation. Thank you for your input! We hope you will stay with us the next time you visit Tybee Island.
Great Weekend Getaway
Great Weekend Getaway
Donna was great to work with, quick in her responses and very helpful. The Octopus Lair was easy to find and convenient to nearby businesses with the local IGA grocery store being only two blocks away. The beach was approximately 6 blocks away and within reasonable walking distance but I would recommend bringing some sort of wagon or cart to tote your beach supplies. We chose to drive to the beach and were able to utilize the public parking areas which involves a $2 hr fee between the hours of 8am and 8pm. The cottage was clean and as described with tasteful decorations. It suited the needs of our family which included 2 adults and 2 young children by making use of the bed, the futon and an air mattress. During our stay a couple stopped by to inquire about the Octopus Lair stating that they had thought about booking it but had waited too long and ended up in a unit closer to the beach. The wife said that they wished that they had chosen this cottage instead because where they were staying it was noisy and congested. We enjoyed our stay and someday when we return to Tybee Island I would definitely rent this unit or consider something else under Donna's management because she was so easy to work with.

Manager response: Yes, Ryan, this is a sweet little spot on Tybee. You are close enough to walk to everything, yet far enough away to enjoy the peaceful tranquility and cool breeze on the screened in porch. So happy to know you had such a good time. Please come visit the Octopus Lair again soon!
We had a GREAT time!! Me and my sister really needed this girls weekend. Perfect weather and very convenient location. The only thing that some people may not like, is that you can hear every footstep that the upstairs tenant make! But we were fine with it. Loved the place! Hope to come again!

Year Purchased: 1994
About: Cathy Sakas is a well-known regional coastal naturalist specializing in tropical and sub-tropical marine and terrestrial habitats. In other words, she loves the nature of the southeast coast and thinks the barrier islands of Georgia are the most beautiful in the world. After landing in Savannah in 1970 to attend Armstrong-Atlantic State University, Cathy eventually ended up on Tybee in the early 90's and rented the downstairs of the house that she would later name Cottage of the Octopus Lair. Cathy's landlady had told her that she would never sell the house, but after a year of seeing how much Cathy enjoyed and cared for the cottage, the landlady wanted her to have it. As soon as Cathy purchased the Lair she surprised her former landlady with a dozen red roses in appreciation. A few years before purchasing the Lair on a trip to Africa Cathy met world-class award-winning artist Mary Jane Volkmann and they stayed close friends from then on even though a half a world apart. In 2005 Mary Jane moved her family from Namibia back to the US to Gainesville, Florida and very soon thereafter came to visit Cathy on Tybee. Mary Jane took one look at the Lair's south facing wall and the wheels began to turn. Over the Fourth of July week of 2005 Cathy and Mary Jane spent seven days from sun up to sun down working from scaffolding to draw and paint the coquettish fish, sassy octopus, impish seahorse and magnificent pink jelly creating the landmark ocean life mural that adorns the south-facing wall. A local television station documented the progress each evening on their news broadcast. Cathy and Mary Jane's next mural is the north facing wall so stay tuned for that event!
Why Tybee Island:
When I first rented the Lair I immediately saw the potential it had. I just loved the coziness of it and the layout. As soon I bought it I made renovations and added my own personal touches using the beauty of nature. I enjoy the outdoors so much that the screened front porch literally became my office. I wrote the scripts for my two natural history series for Georgia Public Television on that porch in the rocking chairs and have written several more papers and programs there too. For years Little Green Herons raised their chicks in a nest in the top of one of the palms and I watched their progress each day until they fledged. How wonderful to see them venture out on the long fronds and then finally take their first unsteady flights.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Living on Tybee has been such a great joy. I like to run and walk and since the beach is only a few minutes from my doorstep I take advantage of it. There is nothing like taking a walk in the morning to see the sun rise like a bright orange ball out of the ocean. I appreciate all that nature has to offer and seeing the stars reflected in the ocean's surface and the moon rise out of the ocean are pretty spectacular events too. Of course the pelicans flying just above the waves is a phenomenal sight to see and watching ghost crabs scurry into their burrows in the dunes is always intriguing. I love eating at the restaurants on Tybee because most have open-air seating, so I can continue enjoying nature while I dine in comfort.
