Flat Rock house description
We are always being asked wonderful questions about our town and these are our top three. 'What's the history of the Village of Flat Rock?”, 'Why does it feel like old Charleston?' and our favorite, ' Where are all the houses?' I'll do my best to explain.
In the late 1790’s and early 1800, before antibiotic and modern medicine, the people of Charleston, SC , like so many others across the South, were tremendously afflicted by illnesses, such as Yellow Fever. One of the only known treatments was to be quarantined. Unfortunately, many did not survive once infected. A few of the plantation owners decided to seek refuge from the populated cities in the NC Mountains. In keeping with their Charleston lifestyles, grand homes were commissioned, designed and built by some of the country's leading architects. Each home was situated on 20 or so acres of pristine forest. Many of these homes are still family residences. Flat Rock continues to represent a beautifully maintained post Revolutionary and pre-US Civil War community. Unassuming stone pillars, simple white fences and 150-year-old iron gates dot Greenville Highway. Homes sit nestled, off the street and away from passersby. Built 1840c, the Rutledge Cottage sits on 16 acres of old forest with a small fishing pond. The summer home was originally built by the Rutledge/King family. 12' ceilings welcome you as you enter on the first floor, 10' ceiling on the second. The two covered side porches offer quintessential Southern elegance and relaxation.
Flat Rock is conveniently located between Asheville NC, home of the Biltmore Estate and Tryon's horse country. It's minutes from whitewater rafting, mountain climbing/trails, fine dining, excellent shopping and crafts.
Flat Rock is home to the Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theatre of North Carolina. The Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church retreat, Bonclarken
Some of our notable past residents are
Mitchell Campbell King (1815–1901), planter and physician.
Christopher Memminger, the first Secretary of the Treasury for the Confederate States of America, had his summer home here, which he called 'Rock Hill'. He is interred in Flat Rock.
Carl Sandburg lived in the village from 1945 until his death in 1967. His home, once owned by Christopher Memminger, is part of the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site and a major tourist attraction in the village.
George A. Trenholm, a summer resident, was the second Secretary of the Treasury for the Confederacy from July 18, 1864 to April 27, 1865.
We are delighted to share this home with you. Daily housekeeping, cooking and childcare are possible with advance arrangements and additional fees. I look forward to speaking with you about your stay at Rutledge Cottage. Be Well.
