Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2004

In 1995, My husband and I were driving back to Atlanta from Jacksonville and stopped in Savannah for lunch. I picked up my usual real estate magazines and paged through them until I found a quaint home for sale on Port Royal Island SC. Now that just sounded so beautiful. I begged my husband to take a detour. Then we found Beaufort South Carolina; Driving the old road of Hwy 17 from Savannah through a canopy of Oaks I felt I De Ja Vu , I had somehow been here before. It was so magical and peaceful, I felt I was home. I knew the first time I arrived in Beaufort that this would eventually be my home. My search then began for the next ten years driving every little road to find something wonderful, special and afforadable. When I arrived at Saltwind I knew this was the magical place. Please join me on my journey to Saint Helena Island in Beaufort SC. I hope you love this tropical oasis as much as I do.

Why the Owner Chose Beaufort

We bought this home with the intention of moving here as soon as we could but employment and health factors soon changed our situation. I angst over whether to let go of my dreams and loose my deposit of $3000 or risk having two homes and go through with it. My Aunt Carole came to the rescue with the vrbo website, I had never even heard of it much less used it. I don’t take vacations. I work. I wanted the property so much; and hopefully this would be my final home so I went through with buy the home. It proved to be much more trouble than i had anticipated but all in all I am still taken with it, STILL in love with my home, my location, and my struggles to implement my ideas to improve it.
NEXT TO BE BUILT IS A RAMP THEN FRENCH DOORS TO THE FRONT! Constantly working on it with lots of unexpected repairs and surprises...

The Unique Benefits of this House

Beaufort and Saint Helena Island offer the history of Low Country with the very first settlers from Europe to North America. The ancient trees, the moss that came over with the Spaniards on the sails of their ships now drapes everything here.
The first Frenchmen in America settled here as did the first of the English. The first Plantations, the first slaves... the islands were first in the Gullah and Geeche cultures.
This island has been waiting here for hundreds of years just waiting for you and I to discover it's treasures. While the rest of world races past at its hectic pace, this little island is much the same as it was when Columbus, Ponce De Leon, and DeSoto set foot upon the New World of North America.

This is a home, not just a rental. It is very comfortable and quiet! Walk your dogs with your morning coffee in privacy on the beach. Fish right in the sound across the street and cook up dinner with your own harvest of clams, oysters, fish & crabs.. In the Summer, Soaking in the salty warm waters at high tide is like a walking into an ocean sized hot tub. The soft gentle waves are a real treat you don't have to fight riptides and the towing out to sea. In early summer watch the Loggerhead Sea turtles nest right on the beach at the access as they have for thousands of years, or investigate the nests they leave on the beach. In late August, the eggs hatch and the baby turtles crawl out to sea in the early fall mornings. Or you can just Relax on the front deck with a glass of wine and a good book with the waves rolling in at high tide and listen to Pat Conroy's Beach Music.

This home is a perfect vacation getaway. The owners are very helpful and responsive with loads of ing=formation about the home and the area. The house is well furnished, very comfortable and well located to the beach and the delightful town of Beaufort with it's many restuarants and shopping. I am retired military and found it an easy drive to Paris Island to visit their extensive exchange and other facilities. The area is conducive to long walks or exploring the beaches with some beautiful scenary as an added bonus. Staying at this home is truluy an enjoyable experience and I can't wait to return!

The house and area photo's in the online brochure were perfect. The house was centrally located so we were able to visit and enjoy the Entire surrounding area. Beach access was easy and close. After settling in we enjoyed the local restaurants, purchased great fresh seafood 5 minutes away. Hunting Island beach is truly a gem amoung beaches in the U.S and just minutes away ! We visited downtown Beaufort on 2 seperate visits ,one of which was at night and we were able to walk around and enjoy the park which borders the canal and all the restarants and pubs as well. Parking was easy and free after 6:00 p.m ! Also when desiring peace and quiet the house was Perfect! Night sky had lots of stars to look at as well as the sound of the surf. The last night we were there made us realize how much more we need to come back to. Thanks Again !

Dishonest and Dirty

Guest: Caitlin (NC)
Date of Stay: 05/30/11 Review Submitted: 06/28/11

Although Helene was friendly up front, things quickly took a turn south after she left. That evening, the kitchen flooded from a leak under the sink that Helene already knew about, but didn't take care of before we stayed. The sheets in the master bedroom were dirty from the previous person who stayed, and we had to wash and remake them before we could even use the bed. (The entire house wasn't very clean, anyway). We were asked to "stick around" the next day so the plumber could come and fix the leak in the sink, and were asked the next day to do the same, as the refrigerator repairman was coming, as well. Our stay was only three nights, so two of our days were sucked up with repairs that should have been taken care of before we stayed. When we asked Helene to refund the cleaning fee and our security deposit, she refused. Sound like a good vacation?? Helene is dishonest, at best, and you are hereby forewarned.

Owner response:Shelley, I am sorry that you are the kind of person that you would try to hurt my future business by writing something untrue. You never once complained that you were being inconvenienced in anyway, nor did you mention anything concerning the cleanliness of the home while you were there. I offered you a 3day free weekend stay to make up for you having to wash your own dishes in the kitchen sink instead of the dishwasher due to the leak under the sink. Karma is a funny and wonderful thing. I ran into Kent, from Lucky Plumbing, remember him? He told me he thought it was very strange that he saw no evidence of your "FLOOD". In fact, he said the sponges lying under the kitchen sink were all dry to the bone. He replaced the piping anyway since he thought it was old and I had to pay for a service call anyway. I thought it was odd that 5 adults with 5 cell phones and not one photo anywhere of this flood.

Relaxing time

Guest: Mike (Matthews, NC)
Date of Stay: 06/01/10 Review Submitted: 05/16/11

We stayed the month of June 2010 and just scratched the surface of all the area has to offer. There is enough to please everyone (History, Beach, Solitude, Shopping, Fishing) and many great places to eat. All in all if we can find the time we will return as we had a wonderful stay. We did the Ghost Walk tour in Beaufort the guide was great and he looked exactly like Johnny Depp from Pirates of the Caribbean We have stayed at many VRBO listings around the US and this met our expectations. You are out of the hectic tourist scene yet close enough if that is what you desire. The pictures do not reflect the true beauty of the area.

Owner response:Mike, Thanks so much, for your review, and i will have to take the Johnny Depp tour, haven’t done that yet. The Walter Gay tour is the greatest , I would encourage everyone to take that tour! It is fascinating especially if you love history. I too found the beauty of this area too much to resist. I knew the first time I came to this town I had to live here someday. As I have not quite made it yet, I did buy this home in 2004 and have at least satisfied some facet of my immediate needs to satisfy that urge, I still long to make it permanent. I sincerely hope you do indeed find the time to return and I will still have my home here for you, making a few improvements here and there as I go along. Hope to see you and your family again soon. Thanks again Helene

Wonderfully Comfy!

Guest: mightydi (Asheville)
Date of Stay: 12/01/10 Review Submitted: 05/01/11

This house is wonderful! Very cozy , very "lived-in" kind of a feel - lots of comfy furniture - not like so many cold, sparsely furnished vacation homes you visit nowadays. The sunroom is particularly appealing with lots of light for reading. The huge yard and surrounding neighborhood is breathtakingly beautiful with the old oak trees an Spanish moss everywhere. Short walk to beach. Very nice landlady too. Leave your cares behind at this house!!!

Owner response:Hey Mighty Di, thanks for taking such great care of my home and I doubt I will have anyone one else bringing their dog and Horse! (boarded down the street). I am so sorry you had to cancel this winter, I am so used to having you their, it is like having a sister or good friend at my home. thanks for loving it as much as I do.

A phenomenal find if you're lucky enough to get an opening - You will not regret it!

Date of Stay: 07/01/10 Review Submitted: 04/28/11

There are so many wonderful things I could say about 15 saltwind. The entire experience was a pleasure from the initial contact with Helene (the owner) through the stay and beyond. Don't let relatively low rental rate fool you. This is a beautiful & charming rental in an ideal location for just about anybody. Helene has gone above and beyond any home owner I've ever rented from. From the moment you walk in the door, it's almost like you’re in the wrong place because you fell like you've just walked into someone’s home while they were out at the store. No cheap, discount clearance furniture here that I see in many homes. These are Helene's possessions, from her grandmother’s living room suit, her own dining table and chairs, all are tasteful and welcoming. Personal mementoes and local decorations add another air of personality. In a welcome switch from many places, all you need is there waiting for you. All appliances i.e. laundry, dish washer (big plus, who wants to do dishes on vaca.?), full size kitchen, gas grill (huge plus for me!) etc well maintained and ready to go. If any have a problem, call her and the repair man is there next day. Fabulous! The cabinets and fridge have all the essentials you need. If you use the last of the ketchup, buy more before you leave. Still have peanut butter left? Put it in the cabinet for the next guest. What a great idea! I loved it. Plenty of sleeping options. Bring the extended family for a great getaway. As far as location, you couldn't ask for more. Right in between Savannah and Charleston, 2 fun and beautiful day trips. Lots to do in Beaufort, many top-notch restaurants (Ask Helene for suggestions, she knows the best. Also, another neat feature, under the coffee table is a basket with local menus and on many are handwritten reviews and recommendations from past guests. Invaluable). Our favorite is Hunting Island State Park. Have been coming to HI for 15 years and this is by FAR the best place we stayed. Forget Fripp and Harbor, this is the place. Last year spent nearly every day there! So much to do looking for shells and our favorite...Shark Teeth. My 4 y/o found 200+ last year alone. Amazing fun. Nature programs and other fun stuff at the park also. I'm really just touching the surface here. You won't believe everything you get for the price. Helene has made this more affordable than you can imagine. There are lesser houses that cost 2x as much (I've been there). You will love it!!!

Owner response:WOW MIKE! You said it all ! Thanks so much, I couldnt have done better myself, i enjoy all your email as well. i really feel like i am getting to know you and your family. I can't wait again until you come back this year and next!. I love it when someone loves this place the same way I do and sees the same things I do. It is such a magical tropical oasis and there is no other place exactly like it, not with the town and the beaches, the culture, the nature and the historical significance. This is America's "Roots" and you can feel it down in your bones when you get here. I really enjoy having you and we shall make it a tradition. Sorry you missed seeing the Loggerhead lay her eggs on the beach maybe she will come back while you are here this year and lay another nest they do tend to return to the same beach each year and they are doing DNA testing on our beaches nests to see if it is the same turtle and the laying the same nests. :) Thanks so much! Helene.

Date of Stay: 03/03/11 Review Submitted: 03/30/11

We just returned from a totally relaxing stay at this lovely home. We have used VRBO exclusively for nearly 10 years, always a good experience, but Helene takes it to a whole new level. What a joy to find someone to work with that we will always call friend. The home is stocked with all that anyone could need-just take your clothes. The location-wow-just what we wanted. Hunting Island State Park is a must visit. If you are looking for peace, beauty and down-time--this is it. No hustle and bustle, just a gorgeous natural setting. Took nearly 800 photos-this was exactly what we were looking for-and we hope to return soon. Thanks Helene-you made our visit perfect. Sue and Ron

Owner response:Hey Sue, I was so glad you could come and have a wonderful stay, you have to send me some of those photos, I can't wait! This is a special paradise for healing and relaxing. We also owe a special thanks to Diana Marshall for giving up for you one of her already booked months, I was so happy we could make it all happen for you. Take care, and I really hope to hear from you and see you both come back next year. I look forward to meeting you next time.:)
