I spent Jan and Feb here to escape winter and do some writing and cooking. I found everything exactly as I had expected based on the description. The setting was even more beautiful than I had imagined. It is hard to describe the clean, fresh air, the soothing sound of the surf, and the awesome majesty of the ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss. I had guests over the two months who were equally taken with the setting. The house was clean and comfortable with plenty of places to curl up with a book or watch TV. It is truly someone's home--with books, cds, collectibles, umbrellas hanging on the coat rack--. I felt more like a guest in a friend's home rather than a renter. Helene checked on me regularly to make sure that I had everything I needed, so the guest feeling was constanly reinforced. I was surprised by the many cultural offerings in nearby Beaufort. I was unable to take advantage of many, but could have kept busy for months longer. There is a lot to see and do short drives away. For equistrians, this is your place. There are stables nearby that will board your horse or rent you a horse for riding under the oaks on miles of sand roads and beach. No traffic here on this dead end road. No noise. No lights to diminish the night time sky. I will be back.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, pet owners, sightseeing, people with disabilities, families with young children.

My family spent a week at Christmas in this lovely house. It held all four adults with ease and comfort. The house was truly like walking into a friend’s house for a short stay. Everything we needed was there and although it took us a few minutes to work things like the TV’s; once figured out, we were able to work all things including the coffee pot, wifi, washer and dryer, and the front door lock. Like many beach houses, this house does not have central heat but Helene was good to have plenty of small heaters about for the chilly night or two that we encountered. I imagine most people would not even have this issue since most frequent beach houses in the summer time. The beach was as beautiful as the pictures present. As advertised, the house is surrounded by huge oak trees dripping with Spanish moss. Sadly, we had more activities to choose from than we could do in a week’s time. That and the house simply beckoned us to relax, grab a book, and have a cup of tea. The drive in and out of the local area where the house is located was breathtaking. We talked with Helene briefly upon arrival and she gave me even more suggestions for activities and “must see” things. This is truly a place to center yourself, which is what we were hoping for. Morning cups of coffee on the beach and lovely sunsets at the end of the day were what we experienced staying in this house. Tons of books line the wall in the front room and most of our time in the house was spent in the “Carolina” room either reading or napping or catching up with email. All of us left feeling rested, centered, and ready for the coming year. Helene is a fabulous hostess and there was not a thing I needed to call about. I’m sure if I had needed something, she would have been right on the spot to help. New friends are a gift. I suspect that there will be future visits to this house. I’m already dreaming of next year!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

Nothing could be finer in all of Carolina! Don't bother looking any further, this is the best. Truly magnificent! All has been done, and then some, to ensure a very wonderful vacation by gracious and genteel owners. An environment unsurpassed anywhere on planet Earth, we will be planning to stay here anytime we are within 700 miles. If I could rate this 500 stars instead of a measley 5 stars, I would!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing, people with disabilities, families with young children.

My family truly enjoyed our visit to this Beaufort property and Beaufort itself. The property is very peaceful and furnished beautifully. We encountered a problem with the AC upon arrival but the problem was quickly resolved by the owner and this was on Labor Day weekend. We couldn't have asked for nicer accommodations and communication from the property owner. We would like to return again.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, girls getaway, people with disabilities.

After multiple stays to this home, I continue to be baffled by the outlandish negative reviews posted by some guests. The owner has always been nothing but helpful and accommodating, more so than one cold ever expect (and obviously, in some cases, deserve). I think some people forget what VRBO homes are...in may cases these are folk's homes or vacation homes. They are by nature personal reflections of the owner and not cookie-cutter, impersonal rental condos. The owner has made every attempt to address the needs of every renter and then some. Stocked cabinets, beach supplies, park pass, significant local knowledge and tips...all things you won't see in a typical rental company home. I personally find this type of rental refreshing, personal and safe. For those who have never been, coming to this house is like coming home. So much so that my daughters refer to it as "Their beach House" and always want to know when their going back, starting when we are driving away after a stay and continuing until we return. It's like our home away from home, and has been that way since our first stay. You owe it to yourself to give it a try. In addition to the home itself, Beaufort, Hunting Island and the surrounding communities offer more to do than you can ever fir into a trip. We've twice stayed for a month and still not gotten through it all. Culture, history, food, excitement...it's all there. And with Savannah and Charleston only shorts drives away, there is never an opportunity to get bored. Please look at all the reviews on this site and not just those seeking attention or looking to right some perceived wrong. I offer my personal endorsement of this home, and would be willing to answer any questions you may have about my experiences with the owner, the home, or the surrounding are. If you would like to contact me directly, the owner will give you my e-mail address (vrbo will not allow me to post it). Some day soon I'm sure the owner will make this her permanent home and this opportunity will be gone. Take it while you can.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

My Husband and I rented the house to celebrate our anniversary and had a beautiful memorable experience. The house is full of old southern charm and decorated with the guest's comfort in mind right down to the wonderful books and magazines for those quiet moments. The setting is magical with the ocean steps away and ancient live oaks lining the streets with a canopy of shade. We enjoyed our quiet morning walks along their path. The large window in the family room allowed us to watch the herd of deer racing off to the woods and a family of raccoons playing in the trees. It is a lovely home and a pleasant, friendly owner. We hope to return again and again!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Very nice house close (six easy miles) to Hunting Island State Park. Comfortable beds, well-equipped kitchen, great family room, and a nice, wooded lot with huge live oaks. Wi-fi, lots of TV choices. Easy walk to beach on the sound, we spent most of our time on the beach at Hunting Island State Park. The park pass saved us the daily $5/person charge. The place was clean and well-maintained. Helene was easy to work with, lots of good ideas about places to go, and promptly returned our deposit. Recommended!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Please do not rent if you reaquire ADA Wheehcair accessible or handicap accessible required. We arrived to the owner occupying the premises with 3 dogs...not clean...had to switch the laundry loads of hers, floors cluttered, dog excremint on the carpets, no beach towels, chairs, beach umbrellas, had to go out and purchase a raised toilet seat, there were no handrails...7 yes seven steps to the front door...the list goes on...ask the neighbors...she always finds a way to keep the deposits to renovate her retirement home...take video and photsos....have her there at check in and check out...we have a video of check out on you tube...just google it...Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Lisa, I am disappointed by your words and lack of professionalism. For anyone reading that may think I keep deposits, I will charge none. Lisa you were very detailed, emailed a year ahead for measurements of all doorways, hall, interior & exterior, height and number of steps front and back ,2 inch sunroom drop, & bath descriptions I have your emails. I offered you no beach towels, umbrellas, handrails, raised toilets seats, or any handicap accesory, just a one level ranch. You never complained of clutter or dirt until 5 wks later. I am baffled;in the garage are enough beach chairs to seat a ball team and on the deck 4 plastic adirondack beach chairs. Dickens said, No good deed goes unpunished.I helped your mom of 450 lbs out of the car, to the beach, up the steps, back into the wheelchair, into the house, to the sunroom, moved furniture so she could get thru, including the dining table. I served your wine in the sunroom. I unloaded your moms bags from the car carried them to her room. In the future, I advise you to disclose your mothers weight & health conditions, you were lucky I was there, you may not have gotten her in the house. I havnt altered my ad nor claimed ADA standards for handicapped. When I wrote my ad I had a ground level concrete step, 3 steps 7.5 in hi, & a ground level floor, then deck was built 2 yrs ago. We reduced the height to 4 inches, which increased the number of steps to 7 & doubled the width, this was explaind to you in detail, my ad is not meant to mislead. Ive booked many wheelchair guests, some bedridden. No one else damaged the doortrim moldings, baseboards or door-cases to bath or to the wicker furniture. Lisa, my home manager, reported the home dirty and damages hours after you left. I was not there, Tamer, my home cleaner, was witnessed it, cleaning $120. You left your trash, claiming the waste centers were closed when they were open. Paid $50. You broke a Majolica mosaic tile pitcher, Comcast denies their employee broke it. cost $40. You never disclosed to me you were bringing a large dog, I have in writing where i asked pet fee $140. After you left we replaced the support under the front steps, it was bent! I added handrails on top and the sides, and hopefully will have a ramp too before you come back next year and VRBO offers Security Damage insurance for about $50.

Our family stayed here while visiting for a relative's wedding near Beaufort. We were DELIGHTED by the many points of history, leisure and beauty nearby. This home is located on the grounds of the Coffin Point Plantation, of which the Coffin Plantation House sits at the end of the eerie yet beautiful Avenue of Oaks. It was really breathtaking driving back home at the end of each day under the Spanish moss. The home was well stocked with games, local literature and the kitchen had everything you needed for your own homemade crab boil and more. We stopped by the markets along the main road coming in and got our fresh seafood down the road at Gay Fish Co. Every day began by taking turns preparing breakfast and taking our kids to explore the beach just a short walk away, returning to eat and then heading out for the day. We mainly visited Charleston, Beaufort, Savannah and the surroundings of Hunting Island. We were not sure what to expect, but Helene was so kind to offer many many helpful local tips that truly enhanced our experience. There was a good selection of information on the local area in the home as well that we deferred to throughout our weeklong stay. We definitely recommend coming prepared with some kind of personal bug spray such as Off!, there can be a lot of bugs buzzing around. Thank you Helene for offering your wonderful home on VRBO! We're not sure what our trip would have been like without it!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing, people with disabilities, families with young children.

Staying in this lovely house was a wonderful experience. The sand road into the property passes down a long avenue of live oaks that arch above you forming a vitual tunnel. Live oaks also surround the house making it feel like you are on the edge of an ancient forest. The beach with a broad view of the Atlantic and nearby islands is only a three minute stroll away. You can hear the sound of the water moving among the sea shells as the tide comes in when you sit on the the front deck while viewing the water peeking through the trees. The house is located a short distance by car from Hunting Island State Park which has an incredible three to four mile expanse of sandy beach and many hiking trails amidst the old growth maritime forest. It's also an easy drive back to Beaufort -- maybe 20 minutes -- and there are numerous restaurants and places to shop in the area. Although we had intended to go further afield during our one week stay, we wound up travelling to new sites in the Beaufort area each day without exhausting them all. The interior of the house is truly something special. As others have said here, it's not at all your normal rental for it feels more like staying at a friend's house. Indeed, a friend with great taste in oriental carpets, interesting pictures and and paintings, curious artifacts, plus lots to read. There is nothing here that you wouldn't like to see in your own home -- particularly if you have an eclectic taste in antiques and collectibles. Each room had it's own theme, and sometimes it took a while to see the subtle elements and how they all fit together. The house is very spacious with big rooms and lots of light. The master bedroom was the only one we used but the others also seemed comforable and nicely decorated. The kitchen is huge with more than you would need to fix a big Thanksgiving dinner. I enjoyed cooking and everything worked. It's rare to find something that's actually better than you had anticipated but this was it. My wife is in a wheel chair full time and bumping her up the front steps took some strength; also the bathroom doors were too narrow for her wheel chair and I had to assist her for a few steps to get access. Still, it was doable. Our host, Helene, did everything she could to make our stay a good one, including giving us detailed directions to how to find our way there. She genuinely seems to get a kick out of sharing her wonderful home with others. This is a real find and we'll be back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Jeff, I cant wait to have you and your lovely wife back. I think you see the same things i appreciate in this hidden majestic oasis It is the combination of realizing this is probably the first civilized area in north america. And here these oaks are that have seen so much in the past five hundred years..

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: In 1995, My husband and I were driving back to Atlanta from Jacksonville and stopped in Savannah for lunch. I picked up my usual real estate magazines and paged through them until I found a quaint home for sale on Port Royal Island SC. Now that just sounded so beautiful. I begged my husband to take a detour. Then we found Beaufort South Carolina; Driving the old road of Hwy 17 from Savannah through a canopy of Oaks I felt I De Ja Vu , I had somehow been here before. It was so magical and peaceful, I felt I was home. I knew the first time I arrived in Beaufort that this would eventually be my home. My search then began for the next ten years driving every little road to find something wonderful, special and afforadable. When I arrived at Saltwind I knew this was the magical place. Please join me on my journey to Saint Helena Island in Beaufort SC. I hope you love this tropical oasis as much as I do.
Why the Owner Chose Beaufort:
We bought this home with the intention of moving here as soon as we could but employment and health factors soon changed our situation. I angst over whether to let go of my dreams, loose my deposit or risk having two homes and go with it. My Aunt came to the rescue with the a suggestion of renting it too. I had never even thought about it. With my husband teaching year round we are rarely able to get away together. I fell in love with the town and the property; hopefully this would be my final home so we went through with buying the home. I am still taken with it, STILL in love with my home, my location, and my struggles to implement my ideas to improve it for you and ourselves. While the rest of world races past at its hectic pace, this little island is much the same as it was when Columbus, Ponce De Leon, and DeSoto set foot upon the New World of North America.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Beaufort and Saint Helena Island offer the history of Low Country with the very first settlers from Europe to North America. the downtown city is so culturThe terrain is a tropical rain forest. the area is 167 islands all separated by tidal creeks, marshes rivers, estuaries, sounds, and the Atlantic Ocean. The ancient trees, the moss that came over with the Spaniards on the sails of their ships now drape everything here.
The first Indians, Spanish, and French, in America settled here as did the first of the English and Scots. The first Plantations, the first slaves... the islands were first in the Gullah and Geeche cultures.
This island has been waiting here untouched for hundreds of years just waiting for you and I to discover it's treasures.
This is a home, not just a rental. It is very comfortable and quiet! Walk your dogs with your morning coffee in privacy on the beach. Fish right in the sound across the street and cook up dinner with your own harvest of clams, oysters, fish & crabs.. In the Summer, Soaking in the salty warm waters at high tide is like a walking into an ocean sized hot tub. The soft gentle waves are a real treat you don't have to fight riptides and the towing out to sea. In early summer watch the Loggerhead Sea turtles nest right on the beach at the access as they have for thousands of years, or investigate the nests they leave on the beach. In August, the eggs hatch and the baby turtles crawl out to sea in the early fall mornings. Just relax on the deck with a glass of wine, good book from our library, feel the gentle breeze and listen to Conroy's Beach Music, the waves at hightide Enjoy our Extensive Library, Kayaking and Horseback riding/walking in the neighborhood and beach at Camelot Farms or fish the beach, or you can drop your boat in the many boat landings.
