The views from this home and property made for a truly memorable vacation and the weather was exceptional everyday! We spent many hours lounging on the lanai and were mesmerized by the ever changing cloud patterns dancing across the mountains. Then our attention shifted towards the ocean as we watched the waves crash over Anini reef. Bring your camera as this Island is a photographers paradise! Every morning flocks of Nene (Hawaiian Geese) would fly from the Kilauea Lighthouse and across the property heading inland towards the mountains. In the afternoon and into sunset the flock of geese would then make their way back to the Kilauea Wildlife Refuge. A virtual painting in the sky was created by the ever changing colors of sunset. A telescope is provided for stargazing which was a real treat due to the private location on a hill and lack of ambient light. It seems that this exclusive community restricts the use of lights at night due to the close proximity the Wildlife Refuge. The accommodations are very comfortable and were perfect for my wife and I. The kitchen is very nice and well equipped for the most discriminating chef. Two nearby small grocery stores were convenient to purchase locally grown produce and it was fun to ride the bicycles to the market. Kilauea Town Market has a great selection of wine and is located next to The Lighthouse Bistro Restaurant and Bakery. The Healthy Hut is a natural health food store and is also located in Kilauea near the main highway. The Farmers Market on Saturday morning next to the Miniature Golf course is fabulous! The location of this Home and Property is ideal for those seeking peace and solitude. Yet, it is close to many fine restaurants, golf courses, shopping, beaches and hiking trails. The Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge is truly worth visiting! Favorite beaches: Kauapea Beach (Secrets), Kalihiwai, Anini and Hanalei. Favorite restaurants: Kauai Grill and Makana Terrace at The St. Regis in Princeville. Both are five star restaurants and offer Pacific rim inspired dishes. Also, Sunday Brunch at The St. Regis is highly recommended. Roy?s Tavern in Princeville is reasonably priced for drinks and dinner. The Garden Cafe at Common Ground in Kilauea is a great place for lunch. The Kilauea Fish Market has the best fresh fish wraps on the Island! The Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant and Fish Market is great for lunch and dinner and the sushi bar is top notch. Fresh fish from local fisherman is br

Manager response: Review from Guest Continued below Fresh fish from local fisherman is brought into the market each day. Favorite hiking trails: Hanakapiai Beach which is the first two miles of the famous Na Pali coast trail and spectacular Hanakapiai Falls. Good idea to have a detailed map of the Island for your Island adventures. We look forward to our return to Kauai and will book another stay at Mele Makani. Owners Response: Mahalo for writing such a lovely and extensive review. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay on Kauai and we look forward to your return to Mele Makani in the near future.
I thoroughly enjoyed my vacation at Mele Makani and the ocean and mountain views were fabulous. The home and property are very private and peaceful, yet the location was very convenient to the activites on the north shore. I love to cook and was especially pleased how well the kitchen was equipped . The Garden Café at Common Ground in Kilauea was a nice place to have a leisurely lunch and the menu items are all organic. Lounging by the pool and watching the sunset was magical and I actually witnessed the "green flash" as the sun set into the ocean! Being next to Kalauea Lighthouse was an added bonus for bird watching. My favorite beaches were Kalihiwai and Hanalei. The location, views and atmosphere was beyond expectations! I would definitely recommend this home and look forward to staying again in the near future. Jeannie C.

Manager response: Aloha Jeannie, Mahalo for the lovely compliments for Mele Makani. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay in our home and we try to ensure that our guests have a memorable vacation. For 26 years we have been blessed to live on the North Shore of Kauai and love to share the Splendor of The Island with our Family and Friends. Witnessing the "Green Flash" during sunset happens quite often during the Summer months from our lanai. We look forward to your next visit and always offer one free night to returning guests.

I do not recommend. My spouse and I saved for a vacation that was long overdue and researched for homes on the North Shore. We will never trust a place with NO prior REVIEWS! Though the home was very private there was an incredible amount of deferred maintenance. An OVER PRICED five night stay and we were ripped off. The house had air conditioning in only part of the property, leaving our first few nights very uncomfortable and no air in the master bedroom. The listing promised air and the property manager upon our arrival even verbally said "you may want to sleep in the guest room which is the only part of the house that is very cool." Note: the guest room had a double bed, that is not what we paid for, we were promised what we saw in the ad and description! The service men occupied an entire morning and afternoon to replace the air unit three days into our stay, this was an inconvenience to say the very least. Plus the property manager verbally expressed she would help us with compensation since much was not up to par for a vacation rental at the asked price, she had not answered any emails for a week, and then responded with "the owners do not wish to compensate". When when my spouse and I responded of course there is no courtesy response! I am a hard working professional and would never act in the manner in which we were treated, with a simple promise and then a brush off. There is so much more I could say but am simply too upset. Stay away! My advice is to only rent when there are several good reviews, also do not trust leasing agents or first time home renters to protect your best interest!

Manager response: How unfortunate that this person feels the need to project ill will towards the Owners and Property Manager of Mele Makani. Our home is equipped with a split level air conditioning system. One in the Master Bedroom Suite and a much larger unit which cools the remainder of our home as well as the second Master Suite where the Queen size bed is located. Not a double bed as reported by the guest. It was untimely that the air conditioning unit in the Master Bedroom malfunctioned on the first night of the guests arrival and we did everything possible to make their stay comfortable. Machinery does break down from time to time. The air conditioning Company responded quickly and accommodated us on a Saturday which was an added repair fee, since the Company does not normally work on the week end. Our Property Manager kindly offered to oversee the air conditioning repairs and remain on site throughout the process, however the guests declined her offer. Instead of spending part of Saturday sightseeing the Island, they preferred to stay in our home and complain. The scurrilous lies propagated by this individual fly in the face of reality. We have no idea what "deferred maintenance" means, however when several wasps had decided to colonize our BBQ grill, these guests melodramatically eluded to them as "Flying Beasts"! Our housekeeper spent 9 1/2 hours cleaning up after these slovenly people departed. Food was left in three pans on the stove, spoilage in the refrigerator, and no less that a dozen wine bottles left on the counter along with three bags of trash left in the kitchen. A large trash can is supplied outside for guests, but in this case was never used. In summary, it appears to us that the people who treated our home disrespectfully were merely seeking compensation for these superfluous complaints. The only legitimate complaint was the malfunction of the air conditioning unit in one room of our home, and we responded and repaired this as promptly as humanly possible.
