Paris Arrondissement 9 apartment description
Imagine yourself in a charming apartment in the heart of Impressionist Paris. Our sunny, light-filled classic apartment is located on the second floor of an 1870's building in the "Nouvelle Athenes" neighborhood of Paris, close to Montmartre.
It is elegantly furnished, sleeps four to six comfortably and is convenient to the center of Paris. Decorated with antiques and oriental rugs that we collected and fully equipped with appliances (full-size refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, gas cook-top and electric oven), it feels like a close friend's home and is the perfect pied-a-terre for a short or extended stay. Our personal art collection complements the charm and warmth of the apartment. Located on the "cour" side of the building, there is no traffic noise and the apartment is tranquil and welcoming.
Our apartment has all original period architectural details --high molded ceilings, parquet floors and marble fireplaces -- but has been completely restored for comfort and convenience. There are windows in all rooms, so the apartment is cool in the summer and light year-round.
Our spacious apartment is 950 square feet (88 square meters), comprised of four rooms; a master bedroom with full queen bed, second bedroom with double bed, and living room with double sofa bed. The separate dining room features a mahogany dining table and six chairs. The full-size bathroom has a large bathtub and shower, double washbasins, toilet and washing machine. There are doors from both the dining room and the master bedroom into the full bathroom. The half bath has a toilet and washbasin. The well-designed gourmet kitchen has granite countertops, ample cupboards and is equipped for preparing a dinner for 8. Linens, cutlery and kitchen utensils are furnished. Telephone/answering machine, DSL internet connection, CD stereo and cable television and a cassette player are also provided. We have tried to anticipate all our guests' needs so that they feel at home--hair dryer, iron and ironing board, high-quality beds, sheets and towels.
We ask our guests not to smoke in our apartment.
Our apartment is situated in the heart of the "Nouvelle Athenes"--a neighborhood which is an appealing neighborhood of nostalgic Paris. Within steps are traditional boulangeries including the winner of the best baguette of Paris, small working shops--the shoemaker, the antique dealer, as well as true neighborhood bistros where the welcome is simple and genuine. This is not "chic" Paris of high fashion and fancy prices, but a true neighborhood. A small park nearby with a children's play area looks just as it did when painted by Vuillard. The apartment is close to Montmartre and the lively market street of rue Lepic, Moulin Rouge and historic Place de Clichy and Sacre Coeur. There is a unique organic market on Saturdays on boulevard des Batignolles, a pleasant stroll from the apartment. It is within close walking distance to Opera Garnier, Madeleine, and the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps and the "hip" shopping of rue des Abbesses.
We live in this neighborhood and Stephanie is fluent in French. She led walking tours in Paris and can help you plan your itinerary. We greet our guests to make sure they are comfortable and we are happy to assist with dinner reservations, airport or train connections or the numerous small details which make a trip comfortable and memorable.
There are two Metro stops and multiple bus stops in the immediate neighborhood within 5 minutes on foot. These connect to all major lines of central Paris and are direct to the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Elysees and all major tourist sites such as the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, the Eiffel Tower and others. This area of Paris is unusually well served for efficient access to all areas of the city and suburban sites (Versailles, Giverny).
The building is small and owner-occupied. There are several English speaking residents who are friendly and willing to help with simple requests. The apartment has been fully modernized, while remaining faithful to the spirit of the Impressionists. Children are welcome. We will furnish additional photos, an area map and description of the neighborhood upon email request.
Here are excerpts of comments about the apartment from former guests:"Of the many apartments we have stayed in in Paris, we remember none so fondly as Darrell's and Stephanie's stunning apartment on rue de Douai. The space is light, airy and very quiet. They are exceptional landlords and we would gladly stay there again."..."We absolutely loved our pied-a-terre during our wonderful two weeks here. Thanks so much for providing a gorgeous apartment and for giving us such a warm and hospitable welcome."..."We loved the apartment. It is beautifully decorated with tasteful touches such as the art, carpets and curtains. The ambience is great – we felt like true Parisians! The multitude of literature is an added bonus." "Your apartment has provided us with a joyful, comfortable respite after each day's adventure. What a treasure you have created."

The five weeks spent here in Paris in your apartment has been a dream! As I sit in the quiet of the afternoon and read on the couch, look out the window at the neighbor's geraniums & listen to the Edith Piaf CD...I'm transported to the Paris of my imagination. The whole ambiance of the apartment makes me think I'm at home. What more could one ask for than to come here and think they've beome Parisian. Thank you for your generosity in loaning us the Douai apartment and for having us to your home. It was truly delightful! Next year can't come fast enought for me. Merci et au revoir, Joan

In the past, my husband and I have experienced renting 2 other apartments in Paris. We have chosen a different arrondissement each time. However, this time (a 2-month stay, May-June 2013) there is no doubt in our minds that the apartment on the rue de Douai is the one calling us back to Paris. We appreciated the carefully chosen decor and the comforts of the apartment. There is a feeling of “coming home” after a day of being out in the city. The traditional French touches are charming and the conveniences of the modern American style bath and kitchen are a plus. When our two daughters came to visit, one stayed in the guest room, and the other was comfortable on the sofa bed in the living room which has doors to close for privacy. The owners of the apartment, Stephanie and Darrell, are a delightful American couple. They live in the neighborhood. They respond to all requests with good humor and excellent service! This neighborhood could not have had more convenient transportation. The bus and Metro are just steps away at the Place Blanche and the Place Clichy. Of course, the Moulin Rouge area and Montmartre are both accessible on foot. There are many opportunities for entertainment in the neighborhood: movies, historic sites, jazz, clubs, cabarets or just sitting at a sidewalk cafe to watch the world go by. For shopping, the rue Lepic with its specialty shops, the nearby supermarkets and the three pastry shops on the rue de Douai kept us well stocked with groceries. In addition, cafes, bistros and restaurants abound. We also found the neighborhood to be very friendly...we enjoyed interacting with neighbors and shopkeepers. In every way we feel that our stay in the apartment on the rue de Douai was an authentic Paris experience that went far beyond what the average tourist might dream is possible.

Thank you for creating such a home here. We stayed with our family of 5 for a month and found every comfort we needed--plenty of hangers, towels, blankets--along with all the touches that really make it feel like a home...art, music, great colors, wonderful furniture and ambience. Thank you! From Tom (one of the children): We had a great 4 weeks here! We had a fantastic time in Paris but were always happy to return here each night.

We always measure our experiences by "would we do it again?" The answer is a resounding yes! The apartment was a perfect setting for our comings and goings. We enjoyed every day. Thanks for sharing your lovely home.

What an amazing four weeks. One of the best trips ever! The apartment was great – I feel like I’m leaving home. I’ll be back soon…. There are so many places nearby to visit, eat and shop. My favorite for pastries and sandwiches is “Coquelicot” at 24, rue des Abbesses. Great pain aux chocolat et pistashe. I would get there early and put one of their sandwiches in my pack for later. So good! I also loved the handcrafted jewelry at “Galerie Sylvia Rhud” at 19, rue Fontaine. Also, there is a great little movie house up the street on rue Tholoze, just up from Abbesses. Good for when you just need to sit for a bit (with café & bar). OK, I’m off – Thanks again.

Well, Stephanie and Darrell -- there's a BIG problem with Your Douai apartment! Guess what? It's so pleasant and quiet and comfortable that one is continually fighting the urge to "stay home" with wine, pate, and wonderful bread from our neighbors the Gless', a bottle of wine and a little music - and to hell with sightseeing! However, we did manage to evade the cocooning bug most of the time and certainly accomplished our fair share of the Paris Experience. After a bad day of hiking for miles experiencing the good, bad and the ugly of Parisienne Cafes, it was such a treat to arrive home on Douai and decide in such comfort whether we would venture out once more to have dinner in the neighborhood - or just stay home with some good wine, plenty of hot water to soothe our tired old bones in the bathtub and relax over a suitably relaxing C.D. Great to spend time here - we had a delightful holiday. Too bad that all good things must end - but now it's back to real life.

Thank you both so much for your wonderful welcome, advice, enthusiasm! Your apartment is stunning and it was perfect for our family of six. How could we ever have squeezed into hotel rooms!? The apartment is so elegant and made us all feel so much more a part of neighborhood life in Paris. The boys enjoyed their walk to the boulangerie each morning coming home with warm baguettes and everywhere we met such friendly Parisians. The weather was superb and the blossoms were everywhere. We would love to return and of course we will tell all our friends so you may be inundated with New Zealanders.

We will never stay in a hotel again! Having our own pied-a-terre in Paris in such a fun neighborhood made us feel like locals. We took advantage of your suggestions…shopped on Lepic for our home cooked dinners, bought our morning and evening baguette on the corner and ate lunch at Le Gourmet. As wonderful as this experience was we won't be staying again now that we have our own pied-a-terre - however, we will be sending all our friends. Thanks for your warm hospitality. We know we'll see you soon. A bientot!

About the owner: Leaning out of our apartment window, we can almost touch the Moulin Rouge. Darrell and I moved to Paris in 2001, after having lived in Seattle, Hartford and Brooklyn. We wanted a mid-life adventure and felt that Paris had everything--the buzz of a big city, great access to other European destinations, famous French cuisine (well, wine and cheese)and the experience of a new culture. When we miss having our toes in the ocean, we hop on the TGV and find ourselves in Cassis 3 hours later. Now, 10 years later, we are astonished to find ourselves almost locals and delighted to wake up each day with another adventure ahead of us, here in Paris.
Why the Owner Chose Paris Arrondissement 9:
We choose our neighborhood in the "Nouvelle Athenes" part of the 9th arrondissement because it has jazz--both literally and figuratively. We're in lower Montmartre, so there are jazz clubs just up the street, but we also love the energy, the movement of this part of Paris. When we arrived, 10 years ago, it was still known as the "sex district." Now that is mostly folkloric and we are surrounded by young French families pushing their babies in strollers. We can get to any part of Paris from our neighborhood; transportation is terrific; there are all kinds of local restaurants and great shops and yet, the neighborhood has an authentic Parisian feel. There's a bit of nostalgia, a bit of hipness and a bit of "naughty Paris" all together here. Our guests love the real French feel of our apartment which was built in the 1860's (think Napoleon and Lincoln) and we are delighted to share our knowledge of Paris with them.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Just walk out the front door and you are in the heart of Paris! Aside from the Moulin Rouge, you'll find great food shopping (one of the favorite pleasures of the Parisians) on rue Lepic. You can hike up to Sacre Coeur--pass the last real "moulin" on your way, or have a tea party in the garden of the Musee de la Vie Romantique. All of this is minutes from our apartment. Beyond the neighborhood, the Opera Garnier (ballet) is within walking distance, if you need culture. If you want shopping, try the Grands Magasins, also a short walk away. For the Champs Elysees and the Tour Eiffel, hop on the #30 bus and you're almost there. It's hard to imagine an area that is better situated, close to everything but cosy in its own space.
