Location: Paris Arrondissement 9, Paris, Ile-de-France (Paris Area), France, Europe (Places Blanche or Clichy, 20 minute taxi from CDG Airport.)

Accommodations:  Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1.5 Baths (Sleeps 4-6)

Imagine yourself in a charming apartment in the heart of Impressionist Paris. Our sunny, light-filled classic apartment is located on the second floor of an 1870's building in the "Nouvelle Athenes" neighborhood of Paris, close to Montmartre.

It is elegantly furnished, sleeps four to six comfortably and is convenient to the center of Paris. Decorated with antiques and oriental rugs that we collected and fully equipped with appliances (full-size refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, gas cook-top and electric oven), it feels like a close friend's home and is the perfect pied-a-terre for a short or extended stay. Our personal art collection complements the charm and warmth of the apartment. Located on the "cour" side of the building, there is no traffic noise and the apartment is tranquil and welcoming.

Our apartment has all original period architectural details --high molded ceilings, parquet floors and marble fireplaces -- but has been completely restored for comfort and convenience. There are windows in all rooms, so the apartment is cool in the summer and light year-round.

Our spacious apartment is 950 square feet (88 square meters), comprised of four rooms; a master bedroom with full queen bed, second bedroom with double bed, and living room with double sofa bed. The separate dining room features a mahogany dining table and six chairs. The full-size bathroom has a large bathtub and shower, double washbasins, toilet and washing machine. There are doors from both the dining room and the master bedroom into the full bathroom. The half bath has a toilet and washbasin. The well-designed gourmet kitchen has granite countertops, ample cupboards and is equipped for preparing a dinner for 8. Linens, cutlery and kitchen utensils are furnished. Telephone/answering machine, DSL internet connection, CD stereo and cable television and a cassette player are also provided. We have tried to anticipate all our guests' needs so that they feel at home--hair dryer, iron and ironing board, high-quality beds, sheets and towels.

We ask our guests not to smoke in our apartment.

Our apartment is situated in the heart of the "Nouvelle Athenes"--a neighborhood which is an appealing neighborhood of nostalgic Paris. Within steps are traditional boulangeries including the winner of the best baguette of Paris, small working shops--the shoemaker, the antique dealer, as well as true neighborhood bistros where the welcome is simple and genuine. This is not "chic" Paris of high fashion and fancy prices, but a true neighborhood. A small park nearby with a children's play area looks just as it did when painted by Vuillard. The apartment is close to Montmartre and the lively market street of rue Lepic, Moulin Rouge and historic Place de Clichy and Sacre Coeur. There is a unique organic market on Saturdays on boulevard des Batignolles, a pleasant stroll from the apartment. It is within close walking distance to Opera Garnier, Madeleine, and the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps and the "hip" shopping of rue des Abbesses.

We live in this neighborhood and Stephanie is fluent in French. She led walking tours in Paris and can help you plan your itinerary. We greet our guests to make sure they are comfortable and we are happy to assist with dinner reservations, airport or train connections or the numerous small details which make a trip comfortable and memorable.

There are two Metro stops and multiple bus stops in the immediate neighborhood within 5 minutes on foot. These connect to all major lines of central Paris and are direct to the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Elysees and all major tourist sites such as the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, the Eiffel Tower and others. This area of Paris is unusually well served for efficient access to all areas of the city and suburban sites (Versailles, Giverny).

The building is small and owner-occupied. There are several English speaking residents who are friendly and willing to help with simple requests. The apartment has been fully modernized, while remaining faithful to the spirit of the Impressionists. Children are welcome. We will furnish additional photos, an area map and description of the neighborhood upon email request.

Here are excerpts of comments about the apartment from former guests:"Of the many apartments we have stayed in in Paris, we remember none so fondly as Darrell's and Stephanie's stunning apartment on rue de Douai. The space is light, airy and very quiet. They are exceptional landlords and we would gladly stay there again."..."We absolutely loved our pied-a-terre during our wonderful two weeks here. Thanks so much for providing a gorgeous apartment and for giving us such a warm and hospitable welcome."..."We loved the apartment. It is beautifully decorated with tasteful touches such as the art, carpets and curtains. The ambience is great – we felt like true Parisians! The multitude of literature is an added bonus." "Your apartment has provided us with a joyful, comfortable respite after each day's adventure. What a treasure you have created."

Thank you for creating such a home here. We stayed with our family of 5 for a month and found every comfort we needed--plenty of hangers, towels, blankets--along with all the touches that really make it feel like a home...art, music, great colors, wonderful furniture and ambience. Thank you! From Tom (one of the children): We had a great 4 weeks here! We had a fantastic time in Paris but were always happy to return here each night.

The apartment is wonderful! So well equipped, comfortable and close to great transportation all over Paris. We had so much fun exploring the city and this neighborhood. Thank you for answering all our questions and playing Easter Bunny for our Daughter. We plan to come back soon.

It was a pleasure once again to stay at your spacious Douai apartment. You have everything set up so I feel like I'm right at home. The new kitchen is "tres belle"

    • We always measure our experiences by "would we do it again?" The answer is a resounding yes! The apartment was a perfect setting for our comings and goings. We enjoyed every day. Thanks for sharing your lovely home.

    • What an amazing four weeks. One of the best trips ever! The apartment was great – I feel like I’m leaving home. I’ll be back soon…. There are so many places nearby to visit, eat and shop. My favorite for pastries and sandwiches is “Coquelicot” at 24, rue des Abbesses. Great pain aux chocolat et pistashe. I would get there early and put one of their sandwiches in my pack for later. So good! I also loved the handcrafted jewelry at “Galerie Sylvia Rhud” at 19, rue Fontaine. Also, there is a great little movie house up the street on rue Tholoze, just up from Abbesses. Good for when you just need to sit for a bit (with café & bar). OK, I’m off – Thanks again.

Well, Stephanie and Darrell -- there's a BIG problem with Your Douai apartment! Guess what? It's so pleasant and quiet and comfortable that one is continually fighting the urge to "stay home" with wine, pate, and wonderful bread from our neighbors the Gless', a bottle of wine and a little music - and to hell with sightseeing! However, we did manage to evade the cocooning bug most of the time and certainly accomplished our fair share of the Paris Experience. After a bad day of hiking for miles experiencing the good, bad and the ugly of Parisienne Cafes, it was such a treat to arrive home on Douai and decide in such comfort whether we would venture out once more to have dinner in the neighborhood - or just stay home with some good wine, plenty of hot water to soothe our tired old bones in the bathtub and relax over a suitably relaxing C.D. Great to spend time here - we had a delightful holiday. Too bad that all good things must end - but now it's back to real life.

Thank you both so much for your wonderful welcome, advice, enthusiasm! Your apartment is stunning and it was perfect for our family of six. How could we ever have squeezed into hotel rooms!? The apartment is so elegant and made us all feel so much more a part of neighborhood life in Paris. The boys enjoyed their walk to the boulangerie each morning coming home with warm baguettes and everywhere we met such friendly Parisians. The weather was superb and the blossoms were everywhere. We would love to return and of course we will tell all our friends so you may be inundated with New Zealanders.

We will never stay in a hotel again! Having our own pied-a-terre in Paris in such a fun neighborhood made us feel like locals. We took advantage of your suggestions…shopped on Lepic for our home cooked dinners, bought our morning and evening baguette on the corner and ate lunch at Le Gourmet. As wonderful as this experience was we won't be staying again now that we have our own pied-a-terre - however, we will be sending all our friends. Thanks for your warm hospitality. We know we'll see you soon. A bientot!

Of the many Paris apartments we have called home (in the 4th, 6th, 7th, 11th, and 13th arrondissements), we remember none so fondly - or with such a desire to go back - as Stephanie Freedman and Darrell Halverson's stunning place on the rue de Douai in the 9th. Unlike any of the other places we've rented before, their apartment managed to offer every conceivable convenience without detracting at all from its restored 19th century décor. Somehow, the modern kitchen, laundry facilities, luxurious bathroom (including the rarity of an American-size water heater) and entertainment equipment (TV, VCR, CD, the works) harmonize perfectly with the three marble fireplaces, grand mirrors, antique molding, and glorious hardwood floors. The space itself is amazing: large, light, and very quiet with two very comfortable bedrooms and separate living and dining rooms. We were very comfortable having dinner parties, something we'd never been able to do in previous quarters. Everything in the apartment - from the antique armoires to the well-chosen artworks and the quality linens - made us feel like we were in a friend's home and not in a rented apartment. The two foldout couches are very comfortable and very flexible for guests. The neighborhood is a very pleasant mix of touristed to the north, shopping district to the west, and residential to the south. Unlike so many arrondissements, the upper reaches of the 9th have managed to maintain a close-knit, neighborly feel, with local residents congregating at cafes and playing with their children in the local parks and playgrounds. Two nearby market streets (our favorite was on the rue des Martyrs, but we also liked very much the rue Lepic), excellent neighborhood restaurants (especially around the rue des Dames), several "boutique" museums (we thoroughly enjoyed both the Musée de la vie romantique and the Gustave Moreau Museum), and even the close by Montmartre vineyard round out the neighborhood's allure, also and undeniably built on its convenient transportation, excellent movie houses, and the bustling Blvd. Clichy. Darrell and Stephanie are exceptional landlords. Warm and inviting, respectful and responsible, they earned our trust and warranted our highest marks and we would happily rent from them again without any reservations.
