Sunset Plantation House is a spacious oceanfront vacation home on the sunny west side of Kauai. Including the lanais, the home has 3800 square feet of living space. Facing south, the home has an unobstructed panoramic ocean view. At night, the relaxing sound of waves can be heard throughout the home.

Sunset Plantation House is located in Kekaha, the western most city in the United States with the least average annual rainfall on Kauai. According to WorldClimate, Kekaha's average rainfall is a sunny 21 inches per year.

A short distance north of the home are Waimea Canyon - the 'Grand Canyon of the Pacific', and the Kalalau Lookout overlooking the northern Napali Coast. A short distance west of the home is Polihale beach. A short distance east of the home are the Kauai Coffee Plantation; Port Allen where Napali snorkeling cruises, sunset cruises and helicopter tours embark; and Salt Pond - a great reef-protected beach for children.

The main floor of Sunset Plantation House is the second floor, which has two bedrooms with private baths, a family room, a kitchen and a large lanai. The second floor family room is part of a vaulted ceiling great room which includes an entertainment center, a formal dining area, an informal dining area and a fully equipped kitchen. The adjacent wrap-around lanai has a barbeque, dining furniture and lounge chairs. The first floor has a bedroom/bathroom suite, a family room, a wet bar and a large wrap-around lanai.

The bedrooms, family rooms, lanais and kitchen have panoramic ocean views!

All interior floors are travertine, except the bedrooms, which have carpet. The lanais have sandstone floors. The kitchen and bar countertops are granite. All bath countertops are marble. The three main showers are oversized with travertine walls, marble pebble floors, travertine benches and multiple shower heads controlled by thermostatic valves. The master bath has a jetted tub with an in-line heater for extended ocean-view bathing. Each of three full baths has a wall-hung mahogany cabinet for two. Each of three bedrooms has a king-size bed, a private bath and entrances from a family room and a lanai.

The home has central air. Fans and flow-through design maximize the benefits of the ocean breezes when central air is not used. A washer and dryer are available for guests and a private shower is available for those returning from the beach. The interior of the home is smoke free, however, smoking is permitted on the lanais.

The maximum number of overnight guests including children over 12 is six. Social gatherings of more than 12 adults are not permitted.

This house is better than advertised. I thought it would be beautiful but it truly exceeded my expectations. I was a little concerned about staying on the west side of the island because most everything you read is there isn't much here. The beauty of staying here is there are not many tourists and you get to the most popular places within 45 minutes many less. In addition it does have 3 must do things that are close by. Waimea Canyon is only 10 miles and is spectacular 7 more mile up and you are at Kalaiau Lookout even better view. We are beach people so we went at leat 10 if not more beaches in our 2 week stay and our favorite beach is just 10 miles away Polihale State Park the last 4.8 miles is over a dirt road but let me tell you it is worth the bumpy ride, we liked it so much we 2 different days. Our favorite area was Poipu with many beaches, trails and restaurants and it is only a half hour drive, The weather truly is sunnier on this side we had 12 out 14 days of sunshine with beautiful sunsets almost everyday. This was our first trip to Kauai but it won't be our last it clearly is the most beautiful place I have ever been.

For my wife's birthday another couple joined us staying here. Years before they had stayed in a home on the other side of the island. Even they were impressed as returning Hawaii vacationers. For my wife and I, it was our first (only?) trip to Hawaii. The house was A M A Z I N G ! ! ! What can I say... sunset views, ocean breeze, absolutely stunning decor and amenities. I have to say the road noise was usually drowned out by the lovely sound of the ocean waves crashing across the street. The balcony chairs were great for sipping cocktails, reading books or catching z's. The ability to have a meal in OR go to a local spot for dinner was fantastic. It really felt like we were home.... just on the coast of Kauai instead of our hometown. And the locals really make you feel at home. We walked a few blocks to the church on Sunday and felt like we were at our home parish. RECOMMENDATIONS for visitors: drive up the road behind the house to get to the "Grand Canyon" of the Pacific. It was an easy drive and breathtaking views. We did the dinner/sunset cruise of Na Poli Coast. Highly recommend it. It is bouncy but do what you need and you won't get seasick. Last but not least we took in the luau at the large plantation. Great show. Great food. Between the house and the activities above, I WOULD return in a heartbeat........ if we can every make a return trip!!! Thanks!!

First I have to start out this review by saying the house was amazing. Our group consisted of 3 couples (older adults) and we all felt like we had the privacy we need in our rooms at the end of a busy day. The house had all the amenities needed to cook in and outside (a nice Weber grill is on the deck) and was well stocked with spices and other odd items. The house also included every outside toy you could think of. We took advantage of using the body boards, beach chairs, and beach umbrella; there were also beach towels to use. The owners were very easy to work with and really enjoyed the experience. The reason for the 4 stars and not 5 is for two reasons; none of which have anything to do with the owner or their property. First: In some of the other reviews there is the mention of the house being right next to SR 50 (main road along the island) and the noise of traffic. Now we read this prior to renting the house and thought it could not be that bad of a distraction. However, there is construction at the beach park about 1/2 mile away and in Waimea Canyon (the trucks were using the road next to the house to get to the canyon construction site). The traffic going by the house was constant and at times distracting. Even without the construction (weekend) the traffic was still heavy; not sure where everyone was going because there is not to many places to the west of the house. Again this is no fault of the owners; and at night with the windows closed and the air conditioner on we did not hear road traffic. Second: The house is indeed oceanfront; but not beach front. Across the road from the house is a lava rock barrier because the beach has eroded over the years. I talked to a few fisherman who said that spot was beachfront about 20 years ago, but erosion has eliminated the beach. But with this said there is beach within walking distance (200 yards to the east and 1/4 mile to the west). Again this cannot be controlled by the owners. We fell in love with Kekaha; this is our second visit to Kauai (third to Hawaii) and we decided after our last Kauai trip that the west side of the island was more of our style. The locals in this little town are friendly and curious about where we were visiting from. Overall our experience was very positive and this house was located centrally for everything that happens on the west side.

Owner response: We would like to empasize that all of the oceanfront homes in Kekaha are subject to the beach erosion that has occurred in the last 3 years and to the road traffic, however, Kekaha, and our house in particular, offers the best vacation rental value on the island and has the best weather.

Our stay was for 6 nights in November of 2011, so my review is very late in coming. We loved the house! It's very upscale and modern. The lanais on both floors are spacious. The best thing for us was that because we were splitting the cost 3 ways, the 3 master bedrooms meant that we (2 couples and my mom) had private space that was equal in spaciousness and amenities. We had a family wedding in Kekaha, so we were able to view several other rentals within 2 miles of our house. This was the best for us because of the price, the room arrangement, the air conditioning (Yes, we did need it all the time even in November) and the view. The road noise was not a problem with the air turned on and would only be annoying if you just plain didn't want to close up and use the a/c. Ed, the owner, was incredibly helpful when I was making arrangements for our stay. He answered many questions with patience and provided any info needed. We loved the house, the view, and the location (we walked to a small deli, the farmer's market, a tourist store, and along many side streets). We would stay there again in a heartbeat!

Our stay here was just magical. We were here for vacation and we renewed our vows on Maui before arriving. The house is laid out well for multiple couples, furnished with style and class, and is very comfortable. I must say the traffic was a nuisance at times, but nothing could take away the charm. We would stay again... in a heartbeat!!!! Gorgeous view!!!!

This home has first class everything...decor, comfort, cleanliness, and amenities. For 25 years, our group of 5 seniors has stayed in vacation rentals all over the west coast, Italy, Canada and Costa Rica...this house tops them all. Yes, the road is noisy, but we soon stopped hearing it. We highly recommend this vacation rental...it is tops.

This is one of the best rental homes we have ever stayed at on vacation. The decor was beautiful, and generous. I loved...loved... That it felt like home. We saw whales, waves, and surfers right fron the family room. Every single room was amazing, and ideal for multiple couples, or a large family. The beach chairs, and towels really were a benefit. The view from every single room could not have been anymore beautiful. Lawai beach was our favorite! Snorkling was amazing, and spouting horn should not be missed. I would highly recommend this rental to anyone. The only, con was the noise from freeway during day....but so what! This is a hidden treasure, and I thank you for sharing.

Owner response: Great review, but there are no freeways on Kauai. The road in front of our house has a 35MPH speed limit and access from side roads and driveways.

We returned to this beautiful house because we LOVE the west side of the island and you can't beat the price for what you get with this rental. We have done all the tourist activities and simply wish to sit back and relax, and drive out to Polihale Beach each evening for spectacular sunsets! We enjoy the authenticity of the west side instead of the hotel complexes of the east and crowded north shore. The house is perfectly laid out with large open gathering areas and very private bedroom suites with awesome showers. Yes, there is a road but, we got used to it quickly and enjoyed time on the large lanai watching the waves, reading and barbecuing. The caretakers are wonderful people with a wealth of local knowledge and make you feel very taken care of. The house is spotlessly clean. Some how they manage to keep the bug and creature population to a minimum, which we have not experienced with other rentals on the island. Swimming is not possible in front of the house, the beach was washed away, but it is fun to watch the waves crash against the rock retaining wall. Kekaha beach is nearby but the waves are big, even in the summer. We recommend Salt Pond beach which is a short drive away and of course Polihale. There is a supply of beach towels, beach toys and a nice washer and dryer in the garage. I spent a lot of time online hunting for another west side rental that I might like better, and I ended up returning to this one.

The house is fantastic but the traffic noise is intolerable! The house is on what has to be the busiest corner on the island. We enjoyed the view and the layout of the house, we were just put out by all of the noise from the non-stop traffic.

Owner response: In the first half of 2011, 43% of our nights rented were to guests who either stayed at our house in 2010 or placed a reservation for a follow-up visit in 2012. All houses in Kekaha with an ocean view are in close proximity to the road that runs parallel to the ocean. People choose to stay in Kekaha because it has the best weather on the island, the longest white sand beach in the state of Hawaii and a total absence of commercialism - no hotels. The road is mainly used by approximately 1000 residents that live west of us and approximately 1500 people who work west of us but live east of us. Accordingly, vehicles pass our house with more frequency in early morning and late afternoon than during the day or in the evening. During the day, tourists visiting Polihale and some of the tourists visiting Waimea Canyon pass our house. There is one other major road east of our property that goes to the canyon. In the evening, the residents who live west of us pass our house if they are going to the grocery store or to the fast food places in Waimea, 3 miles east of us. The speed limit is 35 miles per hour in front of our house. This is not mainland traffic. The closest experience to mainland traffic on the island is the traffic entering Lihue from the west early in the morning when commuters who live on the west/south half of the island are going to work or to the community college in Lihue. Similar traffic occurs at mid-day in Kapaa. There is only 1 main road that traverses 3/4 of the island. The other 1/4 of the island is the beautiful Napali Coast. Fortunately, we live very close to the western end of that road. Our house has central air conditioning, so the traffic noise does not interfere with activities inside the house if the windows and doors are closed while the air conditioning is operating. When we are there, we spend many hours on the lanai facing the road, by ourselves and with friends, and the road noise does not interfere with our enjoyment of the ocean view, the ocean breezes and the beautiful sunsets.

                                  Year Purchased: 2003

About the owner: Ed is a Mechanical Engineer/MBA (University of Cincinnati) who was an executive for high tech companies including IBM, Oracle and several Silicon Valley start-ups. After retiring from Silicon Valley, he owned and operated a Plumbing Fixture business in Santa Cruz known as 'Plumbed Elegance'. Annette is a Dental Hygienist (West Liberty College) and continues to work part-time in Palo Alto and Cupertino. They have 6 children and 12 grandchildren who reside in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Florida and California. They currently reside in Aptos, CA.

                                  Why the Owner Chose Kekaha:
They constructed this house in 2003, as owner-builders, after visiting Kauai every year from 1987 until 2003, except for the year after Iniki. They stayed in Princeville, Poipou, Kapaa and Kekaha during their many visits and chose to build in Kekaha because it had the best year round weather on the island.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
They designed this house for large families, multi-generation family gatherings and visits by several friends. There are few, if any, other properties on the island that have 3 master suites and 2 family rooms. They placed particular emphasis on the bathrooms ensuring that each bath was spacious with oversized showers and double vanities. With the panoramic ocean view, they added 1350 square feet of covered lanais and large sliding glass doors in all bedrooms and family rooms to maximize the ocean view. Finally, they added central air because the west side is the sunny side of the island.
