Child Friendly holidays: The area is particularly suited to young children who will love paddling or even swimming in the lakes. They will especially love chasing the fish that dart around their legs in the shallows of Lake Bohinj.....Exploring the forest paths and mountain meadows is a delight while playing pooh-sticks from the bridge at Ribno is always fun. The local pubs and restaurants welcome younger diners and will usually have high chairs. Since most cook food from fresh ingredients, even the fussiest of palates can be catered for. Which child dislikes pizza ?.... especially when the pizza is so big it doesn't fit on the table (family sized pizza at Pizza Ema in Cesnica). There are numerous well equipped playgounds for toddlers and many of the sandpits include buckets and spades. The local swimming pools have play pools that are ideal for young children, especially those at Hotel Golf and Aqua Park, Bohinj. The latter has devilish water slides, caves and a climbing wall with splash pool below! For the youngest winter adventurers there are several winter village ski slopes to try out a toboggan or even skis for the first time! The larger resorts have special children's area too.
Summer activities: The Bled area boasts all the usual lakes and mountains holiday activities, with agencies offering amoung others: pony trekking, white-water rafting, canoeing and canyoning trips as well as excursions locally and beyond.......The Julian Alps are criss-crossed with paths and attract both ramblers and serious mountaineers alike. Many paths are way-marked so it is easy to find your own routes. Guides are available to escort you on longer treks and up the challenging Triglav - at 2864m - the tallest mountain in Slovenia........Most visitors to the house in summer will at some point take a refreshing dip in Lake Bled. The lake is fed by thermal waters and can reach a very pleasant 24°C by September. Lake Bohinj is a little cooler but well worth a visit....the mountain backdrops are stunning and will take your breath away just as effectively as the cold water. Lake Bled offers scenic gondola and horsedrawn carriage rides.
Late spring and autumn are especially pleasant times for exploring the area's numerous paths and tracks. In spring, before the trees gain their summer foliage, often unseen vista are opened up. In September and early October the spectacular autumnal colours make the area a true ramblers paradise.
Winter is ski time and with several ski areas ( both downhill and cross-country) within 40mins drive there are slopes for every age and ability. For those in search of winter mountaineering, this is the place...the area's waterfalls freeze making low altitude ice climbing an option.

Sited just 3km from Bled, the house , traditionally known as ' Pr Tonco ' (Tony's Place), is well positioned for both lake & land attractions & as a base to explore the further reaches of the Julian Alps. The spectacular Vintgar Gorge is nearby and is easily reached by one of the many well trodden footpaths. Gorgeous Lake Bled is a short cycle away and it is easy to visit nearby Lake Bohinj by car or bus. If you decide to stay put and simply soak up the tranquillity, the balcony offers wide views over the fairytale castle and beyond.
By Slovene standards, Zasip is now a large village and contains everything you might need on a day-to-day basis, including the well-stocked local Mercator supermarket and a friendly pub / restaurant that serves good food and refreshing drink. On the hill overlooking Zasip, Pizzeria Jurcek offers great views of the village and the valley beyond. Directly behind the restaurant is a footpath which leads to the bottom of the famous Vintgar Gorge
Golf: Bled Golf course is one of the most beautiful golf courses in Europe. It is maintained to competition standard, and is located just 5 km away.
Ski: Slovenia has a reputation for winter sports and the area around Bled has numerous downhill ski-runs, cross country ski circuits, a number of ice skating rinks and the largest ski-jump in the world.The ski fields around Bled are most suited to intermediate skiers, however there are enough easy runs for beginners to progress and a few black runs to test the more advanced skiers. Off-piste skiing is possible but the terrain is too exposed to attempt without a guide. Ski hardware can be hired in Bled or at the foot of most ski centres. The nearest resorts include Vogel, Krvavec, Kobla, and Kranjska Gora as well as Bled's very own Straza ski slope, which is great for children... With several villages having their own smaller slopes it is a great place to bring younger and very young children to play in the snow or to try out a toboggan. Even if they don't take to the snow, the nearby aqua parks are sure to please children of all ages.
Although most of the summer attractions are curtailed by the low winter temperatures and snow cover, it is still possible to go trekking on Icelandic ponies.... The spa facilities of the Golf Hotel are especially inviting in the winter...the outdoor hot tub overlooking the lake and castle is a personal favourite.

About the owner: As a structural enginer I have always wanted to either build my own house or do a full-on renovation. When my daughter was born I realised that my available time and cash could both only shrink and that it was now or never!
As soon as I saw Lake Bled and had explored the local area I knew that it had to be now! With spectacular scenery, an understatedly classy feel and outdoor adventures all year round, I knew I would want to keep coming back. On top of that the food was good, the beer cold and the people warm.
With my daughter now 8 years old we have found the area to be great for young children. There are lots of short yet beautiful walks to do in summer, paddling with the fish is unforgettable and in winter the smaller nearby low-level ski slopes are ideal for starting out or having the thrill of a toboggan ride without the need to spend a full day in the mountains. The local pools have great baby areas with warmer water and toys provided. What more could you ask for. Oh yes, Spring is glorious with an explosion of mountain flowers and and kicking through heaps of dry aurtumn leaves is always a wonderful experience.
Why the Owner Chose Bled: The Alpine Retreat, named by a friend, was the first property I viewed and I immediately saw that it offered me a great opportunity to indulge in my own 'Grand Design'.. Looking beyond its run down condition, I instantly knew the house was special for reasons beyond its age, charm and wonderful location. My neighbours were immediately welcoming, and it is always a pleasure to catch up when I manage to take a holiday myself, but I am sure they thought I was mad for buying such a rundown place. However, after five years of incremental and some quite major works, the interior has been transformed, and I can at last enjoy the house for what it has become. The original rooms have been upgraded whilst maintaining their character and the upstairs area, once open for storing crops, now houses two bedrooms, a bathroom and new windows that have opened up some spectacular views.
The Unique Benefits at this House: I bought the house and undertook the refurbishment with the intention of creating a family holiday home and really only considered renting to holiday-makers after all the hard work was done. So, with all the fittings, fixtures and furnishings, it really is a home from home for all to enjoy.
The warm notes from our guests, of thanks and appreciation of the house and the area, have made sharing our house more of a pleasure than a chore and I think this shows in our personal approach.
We are a family that likes to explore and, remarkably even after years of visiting, we are still discovering new places. Many of our favourites are included in the house folder so our guests can get straight to the local top spots.
