Orcas lodge description
Enjoy our dream! We recently purchased the historic Buckhorn lodge and we renovated it for the summer of 2013!
The 1930's building has a newly remodeled bathroom, new cedar paneling, a wood stove, kids sleeping loft, hot tub (with ocean view), bikes (Yes! you can ride to town in about 15 minutes - get out of your car!), kayaks, crab traps, private beach, ping pong table, BBQ, fire pit. Yes, it's rustic, but wonderfully comfortable and the perfect family retreat.
Don't spend your vacation driving to the beach. Our private beach is about 10 feet from our 40 foot deck (see photos) which runs the length of the front of the house. You can relax while keeping on eye on the kidsThe views are astounding - snow-covered Mt. Baker is visible to the North East, Vancouver is out past Sucia Island to the North West.
As noted, you can ride one of our bicycles or walk to to the town of East Sound to shop, eat at one of the wonderful restaurants, attend the weekly farmers market or just stroll. Because we are so close to the beach, it feels as if you were on your own private island. We have a few neighbors all of whom are wonderful kind people.
We do not have TV or a land line, but offer wireless internet, a VCR and DVD player with approximately 50 movies to choose from.
There are two private bedrooms with queen beds, a fold out twin mattress for the living room and a kids' sleeping loft with cots and fold-out beds which sleeps 4-6. There is also a four person tent that you can set up on the lawn and put the fold-out matresses in. Buckhorn Lodge is a one-of-a-kind spot - close to town, right on the water, incredible views on beautiful Orcas Island.
Our home offers great value: in addition to its superb beachfront location, the cost of renting a bike on orcas for a single day is $115. Kayaks rent for $25.00 an hour. Those two amenities alone add over a $1,000 in value with just a few days of use!
We look forward to providing you with a great island vacation.

FALL BREAK VACATION
FALL BREAK VACATION
We just returned from a wonderful trip to Orcas Island over our Fall Break. We were very excited for our stay and it met all our expectations. My kids (10 & 12) loved sleeping in the loft and my husband and I were very comfortable in the beach front room with the wonderful view of the ocean. There was so much to do right in the backyard. We went and explored the beach everyday and loved finding beautiful purple and pink starfish. We also had a seal visit us a few days and watched it play in the water right next to the beach. We took the rowboat out and loved rowing on the calm waters right next to the coast and looking at the wonderful view. The kitchen was fully equipped and we had everything we needed. When we were not eating at home we went into the town which was very close (5 minutes) and had wonderful meals. It is also very close to Moran state park (10 minutes) where we did some beautiful hikes to the waterfalls and to the top of Mt. Constitution for amazing views of the island and surrounding area- you felt like you were on top of the world. *The lodge was very easy to find and the photos accurately reflected all it had to offer. It was even better in person! It was clean and well-maintained and the owner was extremely helpful and prompt in answering any of my questions. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone who is visiting Orcas Island!

Our family of 5 (3 teens/young adults) had never rented a house before, and this turned out to be an ideal situation for us. The house was very clean and spacious. The photos and write-up on the website were helpful, but seeing the house (and it's awesome view) was even better than I expected. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans and some food items. There was plenty of room to prepare meals, and we could eat either in the kitchen or in the dining room. We spent a lot of time on the deck, watching the water and the weather. We saw deer a few times, otters almost daily, porpoises and harbor seals many times a day. We walked the beach, inspecting tide pools and kayaked almost every day. We loved having access to the kayaks! We used the fire pit a few times and enjoyed smores along with the view. The hot tub was nice after a day of hiking! The house is centrally located on the island, so it was easy to go wherever we wanted. My husband and I went running several times in the morning on the main roads and didn't have to worry about much traffic. My daughter and I walked to Eastsound one day. It's an easy place to be as active as you want to be. We would recommend hiking to Ships Peak on Turtle Back Mountain. We went on a 3 hr kayaking trip in Deer Harbor - lots of fun. It was foggy/cloudy each time we went up to Mt. Constitution, but I would assume the views would be amazing. Hiking some of the lower hikes (Twin Lakes and Mountain Lake) were easy and enjoyable. There are also many geocaches on the island for those who enjoy caching. The owner was very responsive to any questions we had. There was internet access at the house so we could email the owner when necessary (it wasn't necessary very often!). We had brought many of our own games to play, but there were games and movies available at the house. The entire family loved staying here. It was so nice to have room to stretch out and a variety of activities to do. We all hope we can come back here again. It was a great vacation.

Time of Wonder
Time of Wonder
We spent the most relaxing week in a long, long time here at Buckhorn Lodge. The lodge can accommodate a larger group, but we wanted a time to relax as a family with just our four-year-olds. The other reviews are accurate and cover very well the great amenities, appointments, wildlife. I would especially recommend this rental to anyone who appreciates and enjoys historic homes/properties with loads of character, like we do. We loved the ping-pong table, porch swing, outdoor dining, fire pit. One night we set up the tent for the "guys" to sleep outside (I went out to check everyone was sleeping -- the meadow next door had 6 deer literally frolicking in it). Our boys loved the toys and dress up stuff. So fun! We spent a lot of time in the kayaks and rowboat (need to work on our crabbing strategy, but still fun). We went for runs on the roads from the Lodge (Raccoon Point - big hills but great workout). There were some days we hardly saw anyone else at all on the beach. Amazing views, rocks to climb, tide pools. This is not really a swimming beach, but I loved to plunge a couple of times for the exhilaration (as others mention -- our boys went crazy [as did we] for the swimming beach at the lake in Moran State Park, a short drive). Sunrise was incredibly beautiful here, and sunset light on Mt Baker was spectacular. You can sit on the porch and watch the weather in the mountains across the water. I will never forget all of us just sitting for long periods of time on the beach, just watching birds, the water... One afternoon we watched two bald eagles hunt a gull. I had no idea eagles would do that. One of them caught it and SWAM quite a long distance with the gull in its claws under the water -- we lost sight of it but assume he brought it up to the beach on the other end. Also looking deep into the eyes of a friendly doe -- just stunning. We loved everything about this vacation and this rental and plan to return. The only caution I would have for people with young kids is the bank is a bit steep, so if you have toddlers or young kids you don't trust much you may need to set some ground rules. We were strict about discussing where to play and set up a rope marker in the grass for our stay. This is such a unique spot and we feel so lucky we got time to enjoy it and allow our boys to really run in around in nature and get their feet dirty in a place like this! I also give excellent marks and thanks to the owners for response and help during the stay.

Fantastic home, location and value
Fantastic home, location and value
Thank you for a wonderful vacation in a world class spot. The views are incredible. A perfect home for our family (8) with a constant supply of "things" to do, if "things to do" are needed. Just sitting on the porch enjoying the views with a good book was enough for most of us. While kayaking we saw eagles 10 yards away, porpoises (we think), and seals. While on the property we saw turkeys and deer plus lots of unknown creatures jumping in the ocean. Biking to town on the great mountain bikes provided (helmets included) was fun and a bit of good exercise. Lots of great looking restaurants in town that we may try next time but this time we took full advantage of BBQin and eating at "home." Though, if you are there on a Saturday don't miss the farmers market and the incredible regional and international foods they have for sale. We could not have asked for more on our trip. Thanks again. Dana

We had the best vacation in years
We had the best vacation in years
Our party of five had an amazing and relaxing week-long stay at Buckhorn Lodge and we want to go back. The host is extremely thoughtful and organized. The lodge is spacious, quiet and extremely clean. The furniture is very comfortable and there are many homey touches. The view form the deck, master BR and living room are lovely. The kitchen is very well equipped and there are good markets and seafood nearby. East Sound is a fun town with lots of restaurants and resale shops. Local attractions such as the Moran State Park as easily accessible. Equally appreciated were the bike, kayaks, books and games. You can sit in the hot-tub at night and listen to the waves or have a camp-fire. The sun doesn't set until after 9:30 in the summer making the days especially long and delicious. We made trips to other parts of the island and to San Juan Island. It was equally wonderful just to stay home and read. It would have been nice to stay longer than a week. We recommend it unhesitatingly as an extraordinary, peaceful place for a family vacation and a great value.

Why the Owner Chose Orcas:
The San Juan Islands are one of the most beautiful and pristine places in the lower 48 states - here you will find bald eagles, Orca whales, salmon, spectacularly long sunsets in an ocean environment you can enjoy. Orcas Island offers the perfect balance of natural beauty and the amenities of culture that we so enjoy - great restaurants, fascinating and friendly people, theatre, and many outdoor activities.
The Unique Benefits at this Lodge:
With all of the recent laws limiting home sites far back from the water line, no cutting down trees, etc., Buckhorn Lodge was unique in its history and amazing location - literally 15 feet from the water, unobstructed views that are breathtaking, and close enough to town so we don't have to drive. The perfect combination of connection to the ocean and connection to town life that we have always wished for.
