Kapaau house description
Hale 'Ukulele is a newly remodeled, Old Plantation Style, redwood cottage located half-way between Hawi Town and Kapa'au Town in North Kohala.
This sweet home has two bedrooms, one full bath, a rustic outdoor shower, a small office, new kitchen, and an open living room and dining area featuring a handcrafted mango wood dining table and vintage Hawaiian rattan furniture.
A large lot surrounded by two empty wooded lots and a pasture with grazing cows and horses, affords privacy and a rural flavor to your stay.
A hammock chair in a century-old mango tree, an outside dining table with umbrella and cushioned lounge chairs with an ocean view are some of the relaxing features for you to enjoy. A gas grill, beach chairs and umbrella, coolers, and water sports gear are included for fun in the sun!
A view of the ocean, Maui, and Haleakala can be seen from the house and property.
Hale 'Ukulele is walking distance to an ATM machine, post office, grocery store, and library and a short drive to restaurants, shops, beaches and a great community swimming pool and community center.
Not too big for one couple and plenty of room for two couples and can accommodate a family of three.
You will want to stay longer to enjoy this unique Kohala guesthouse. Rural, local, fun!

- North Kohala is a beautiful, laid-back district with much local color and history. Kamehameha I was born here and spirited away to be raised in a valley beyond Pololu at the 'end of the road' (although some people say we are at the 'beginning of the road'!) His statue resides in downtown Kapa'au and the Kamehameha Day celebration in June, along with the Kohala Country Fair in September, are two highlight events in Kohala. We have a wonderful Farmer's Market in Hawi Town on Saturdays, a great pub-deli, excellent restaurants, a free swimming pool, golf course, zipline course, cafes, and shops. There are also hiking trails and back roads to explore Old Hawaii up close....moreless

Great Place to Stay
Great Place to Stay
Last January we stayed at the cutest, most relaxing, and delightful vacation rental on the big island’s Kohala coast near Hawi in the town of Kapa’au. The owners were just great, very helpful, and easy to connect with. They built the most amazing mango wood table and their colorful artistic nature was everywhere throughout the house and around the property. The house was equipped with everything you could need and we had many delicious meals during our week at Hale Ukulele. Lots of birds visit the property, especially in the morning as we were drinking our coffee. We loved lying in the hammock chair in the trees, enjoying the birds and the horses that visit over the back fence. The weather in this area is great with trade winds easing the Hawaiian heat. We haven’t had a chance to relax like this for a very long time. There are great hikes nearby and cute shops for coffee, eating, or local arts. Whether you stay just a short time or extend your stay to a month, you can’t go wrong at Hale Ukulele!

About the owner: We live part-time in eastern Washington state and part-time here in North Kohala. We have been coming to Hawaii and Kohala since the early 1980's. After retiring, selling our house in Seattle, and moving to our cabin in the mountains, we traveled the world to find a second home in a unique place with an interesting and vibrant community, warm weather, and ocean beaches. We kept coming back to Kohala and finally found our Hawaiian retreat between Hawi Town and Kapa'au Town. We love to swim, snorkel, hike, bike, run, walk, play music, go to the library, eat out, shop the farmer's market and meet new friends. All of these things we can do right here and most of them not even having to get into the car! Kohala is the place for us and we hope you will enjoy our little piece of paradise and find your own adventures and fun.
Why the Owner Chose Kapaau:
Hale 'Ukulele is named for our love of playing the 'ukulele and from the inspiration of Old Hawaii seen in the Dietrich Varez prints we have purchased over the years and display throughout our home. We like being in town with good neighbors and lots of privacy. After clearing out the overgrown wooded lot behind the house, we now enjoy watching nature in our own backyard. The birds are amazing, the horses and cows love to visit our mango tree hammock chair and cocktail hour sunset viewing spot at the back of the property! And if the weather is not so great we just take a short ride down the road to Mahukona or Mauna Kea Resort for a swim or go snorkeling and chill on the beach at 69 or Hapuna. How can you beat that?
The Unique Benefits at this House:
People are just happier in Hawaii! The local food and fish are fresh, the air and water are clean, and we live in a rural, ethnically mixed, artsy community. You can cook at home (in our new kitchen!) or have ono grindz out. You can lounge around the house and yard or head out for close-in adventures or walk to a Monday night concert or film at the library. It's all just so much fun!
