Drakes Island house description
This Drakes Island house has been a special family gathering place for over 50 years. Sitting on six acres of waterfront real estate on Wells Harbor, this cape is a quiet getaway on a semi-private road. Swim, paddle, sail and fish when the tide is high. Sit on the end of the boardwalk and watch the seals sun themselves 100 yards away on the marsh. Watch the tide drop 10 feet to expose acres of sand bar. Dig for clams and play tag on the sand bar at low tide. Play tennis on the clay court sheltered in the trees behind the house. Ride beach bikes around the island. Run 3 miles down one of the longest sand beaches in Maine to the Rachael Carson preserve. Walk around the point and skip stones in the harbor. Walk 5 minutes to the front beach. Surf and swim. Sit under an umbrella on the granite terrace, sheltered from the wind between the garage and the house. This house provides everything a family could want on vacation.
The wood-paneled interior is simple, warm and welcoming. The open downstairs plan is great for family get-togethers. The kitchen, dining and living rooms open onto one another with expansive views over the harbor. A round dining-room table with a wide lazy susan seats ten easily. The kitchen has modern stainless appliances and is a wonderful group cooking area.
Once the sun has set over the horizon, mosquitoes often come out over the salt marsh, so settle down in the living room to play cribbage; retreat to the study to read, play the piano, listen to music or watch television. Work is frowned upon while at Drakes, but there is wireless access if it will help relax you the next day on the beach.
Tuck yourself into one of 5 bedrooms, one master downstairs, or one of the four bedrooms upstairs, 2 with views over the harbor, and 2 with bunk beds that the kids will love.
If you haven’t read between the lines yet, this is a wonderful home that we are opening up for just a few weeks a year to a handful of special families who are looking for a memorable vacation together. This is not an elegant resort, but a real home with family photos, shells we've collected over the years, and a rich layering of three generations.
Please let us know if you have any questions about this wonderful and cherished location. Good luck with your vacation search!

- Drakes Island is a beautiful beach and harbor community with convenient access to many scenic southern Maine towns and attractions such as Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, York, and the outlets in Kittery. One could dock a fishing boat at the marina across the harbor and boat to the house and in the ocean at mid to high tide. A wonderful family vacation spot!...moreless

About the owner: The family built this fitting Royal Barry Wills house in 1960 on 6 acres of secluded waterfront real estate. It has been a family retreat for over 50 years. We have just opened it up for a few weeks of summer rental to a few special families.
Why the Owner Chose Drakes Island:
This beautiful waterfront land was owned for generations by a local family, who finally agreed to sell it to our parents in the late 1950s.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
This is a uniquely quiet and charming spot on Wells Harbor. It features a wonderfully changing view of tides, seals, birds, and harbor activity. The sunsets will remembered forever.
