Rhinebeck chateau / country house description
Imagine sitting on the long lakeside deck of this home at twilight, watching the sun set over the gardens as the peeper frogs begin to chirp. The sounds of nature, the ripple of the lake, the scent of honeysuckle on a summer breeze…and when night falls, take the row boat out on the lake by moonshine and the light of a sky full of stars.
There are no motor boats to disturb Silver Lake, one of the largest private lakes in Dutchess County. We have a private dock with a rowboat perfect for fishing or swimming, as well as a gravel beach with a canoe and two kayaks.
A screened-in porch, which has a translucent roof to let in sun but keep out rain, is a great spot for breakfast or a BBQ cooked on the charcoal grill or in the large, full-service kitchen adjacent to the porch.
There are three bedrooms, a study and kitchen with cable television, and a living room and sitting room with lake views. Each room is filled with windows—blurring the lines between indoors and out—home, lake and woodland. Two upstairs balconies also overlook the lake, as does the shower in the upstairs bath.
This property has been landscaped by the owner, a professional garden designer, to combine the best of the natural world and modern home living. The cottage-style, cedar-sided house is surrounded by ornamental gardens, including a full sun garden, shade and woodland garden areas, and a bountiful perennial garden adjacent to the deck. The organic vegetable garden, full of fresh tomatoes, broccoli, garlic, beans and other goodies, is also accessible to vacationers.
There is a new washer and dryer in the basement, as well as a bicycle, ping pong table, and a box of lawn games. There is Wi-Fi throughout the house, plenty of closet space, and a collection of board games. Cats are welcome, as are well-behaved dogs.
The towns of Rhinebeck and Red Hook are 12 minutes away, while Tivoli (20 minutes), the small city of Kingston (25) which has the Ulster County Performing Arts Center, the larger city of Poughkeepsie (35) for the Bardavon Theatre, and the upscale towns of Millbrook (25), Hudson (40) and Woodstock (40) are all within easy driving distance.
There are hiking trails in every direction, including along the Hudson River and in the Catskill Mountains to the west and Bash Bish waterfall to the northeast. For safe cycling go to the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. Bard and Vassar Colleges feature art galleries, performances, entertainment and dancing at the Spiegeltent, and the Frank Gehry-designed Fischer Center for Theater. The closest towns of Rhinebeck and Red Hook have an independent movie theater and a multiplex, and the Dutchess County Fairgrounds hosts the weeklong fair and other events. The FDR Museum and home is just south in Hyde Park. There are several golf courses nearby and dozens of excellent restaurants, including those of the Culinary Institute of America. The Omega Institute is 10 minutes away and there are several yoga studios right in the village of Rhinebeck.
This is a charming and well situated home. If you have any questions during your stay, the owner lives 15 minutes away and is extremely conscientious about helping whenever it is needed.

The towns of Rhinbeck, Hudson, and Millbrook make for great shopping and antiquing, and have many fine dining restaurants. There are several spectacular public gardens in the area such as Innisfree in Millbrook and Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring. The nearby rail trails are perfect for safe family cycling. There is a farmer's market every Sunday in Rhinebeck as well as others in nearby towns. Several local farms sell fresh meats and produce on site all week long. The area has many 'pick your own' farms from strawberries in June, peaches and blueberries in July and August, and apples and pears in late summer. And, of course, there is fresh corn available for most of the summer....moreless

Great stay in peaceful setting
Great stay in peaceful setting
We were a party of 4 adults (and one dog) visiting Rhinebeck for Columbus Day weekend. This home was a great find and below are some specific comments about the property. - beautifully situated home in tranquil setting on Silver Lake, wonderfully landscaped w/ great windows overlooking lake and lots of spots to sit and enjoy the views - VRBO pictures are very accurate - home is easily accessible to both Taconic Parkway and town of Rhinebeck, although road into property is not for the timid driver; also, while this is a secluded setting, there are a number of other homes along the lake, so be sure to know exactly which house you are looking for or you will find yourself navigating more of the hillside than you bargained for - screened in porch is great, especially if you want protection from sun or mosquitos - kitchen is very comfortable for multiple people preparing/eating and is well equipped; Randi has everything one could possibly need, the challenge is knowing where to look! - outdoor compost, Eco-friendly soaps, paper towels and recycling make it great for those who care about the environment - both bedrooms (one on 2nd floor and one on main level) had private baths; no 1/2 bath which necessitates the main level bathroom being more communal or two in the group going upstairs when necessary; large shower in 2nd floor bath has fabulous windows overlooking the lake, giving you the feel of being ensconced in nature - we didn't use the kayak/canoe but accessing the lake is steps away from the back door; great deck with Adirondack chairs along the back of the house allows for relaxing as the sun works its way westward - Randi was responsive when we had a question about something and is close enough to come by in person if necessary

Excellent stay, peaceful house
Excellent stay, peaceful house
What a wonderful property to relax and reconnect with oneself, family, and friends. The home was very comfortable- super amenities, well outfitted and supplied, beautiful garden, and well-appointed kitchen (I love cooking), and eco-friendly oriented. The owner was incredibly helpful in providing directions for reaching the house, supplied us with tips and tricks around the house, and generously provided a few treats from her garden. The property was clean and well maintained. The bedding, bath and swimming towels were provided immaculately clean and in abundance. My partner suffers from some indoor allergies and had a few sneezing sessions, but didn't complain at all- individuals with allergies may want to come prepped with their preferred management tactics as we did. While there are neighbors, the property is incredibly private. We didn't see anyone during our stay. The views are wonderful, and the waterfront deck made for great morning yoga sessions. I comfortably napped in any number of comfortable chairs facing the lake. I would recommend that travelers to bring a starter kit of groceries - at least cover their first in house meal- as the nearest store is a little ways away. The Rhinebeck Farmers' Market on Sundays is a real treat- a great place to connect with the community and enjoy the local goodies. Otherwise, there is an organic market in the heart of town at the end of Garden Street. We cooked in all of our meals, but stopped in at Bread Alone for coffee one morning. In terms of activities and recreation, there are two kayaks, a row boat, and a canoe at the house. Be sure to check the kayaks for critters before climbing in. We saw a doe and her fawn on the property around the house. We also spent the weekend watching a Blue Heron around the lake. The Burger Hill Park is a nice stop on your way in or out of town to walk up the hill and check out the view. The house has lots of books for reading and verifying your wildlife sightings and a ping pong table in the basement. My only lament about my stay was that it was too brief!

Owner response: All I can say is WOW! What a great thing. This weekend I was away for my birthday and arranged for this guest to take care of themselves...I always meet each renter but could not this time. I felt badly about my neglect, but now I am thrilled that they had such a great experience....and I knew nothing of it!
Peaceful Lakeside Retreat
Peaceful Lakeside Retreat
We have just returned home after a perfect 2 week stay at Randi's lake house and we are already missing our Rhinebeck life The house is ideally situated on Silver Lake. The views are as impressive as they appear in the photos in the listing. It was a pleasure to take out a kayak or canoe any time of day without a hassle. The house was large enough to offer privacy and individual space and small enough to feel cozy. The many architectural details made the space inviting and interesting. Exquisite gardens and landscaping cover the property. While at the house, we felt like we were in the country but we were within a 15 minute drive of restaurants, quaint shops, hiking trails, movie theaters, cultural and historical sights. Randi was a perfect host. She was available to answer any questions and encouraged us to eat from her amazing vegetable garden (which we did). The house and kitchen were clean and fully stocked so that all we needed to bring was our personal items. Our only complaint was that we had to leave!

Owner response: The lovely people who wrote this review could not have been better guests! I am so pleased that they were happy and comfortable. They appreciated the house and spot exactly how it is meant to be....as a place to rest, get in the lake, cook, and spend easy time with one's family. And I am so appreciative that they took the time to write such a special review.
Restful, Healing, Lovely
Restful, Healing, Lovely
The house and gardens are a feast for the eyes. Everywhere you look there are flowers and plants, all happily thriving in this peaceful place. Our stay was delightful. We had everything we needed, inside and out -- basically, our own lake; indoor and outdoor decks from which to enjoy it (you can even see it from the upstairs shower); a vegetable garden; a mowed lawn; every cook's tool one could want; and a view from every room. Anytime I had a question about what bird had just visited or what wildflower was growing in the yard, there was a book to answer it. Plus an amazing library of classics. The house itself is beautifully designed and crafted to let light and breezes in. Out every window is a beautiful, tranquil view. Inside, the furniture was comfortable and a wonderful mix of color. It's a place that causes you to say "ah, what a lovely house...." but at the same time you feel comfortable right away. The cook in our group of four said the kitchen was her ideal, plenty of counter space and room for the rest of us to keep her company at the country table. Right outside the kitchen door was a garden of fresh vegetables and herbs. The owner was happy for us to share it and even sent a recipe I was interested in. We went out in the canoe one morning and saw not one other person. During our whole stay we only saw one (silent) rowboat on the lake and no one on our entire side. We took an easy trip to Rhinebeck one day but for the rest of the time I was happy to stay at the house, looking out at the lake and absorbing the natural beauty all around. I had arrived under a ton of work-related stress (causing my jaw to lock up to the point of pain). By the time we left, my jaw had completely relaxed. Be sure you get good directions in Deer Hill Road to the house. We took a wrong fork on the way in, although we quickly realized it and turned around. Once you've done the driveway once, however, it's easy to get in and out. The first view of the house is a treat as you turn the corner. I couldn't wait to get out of the car, and the more I saw the more there was to like. It was just what I needed.

Cozy, Secluded, Relaxing
Cozy, Secluded, Relaxing
My husband and I rented the lake house for a week-long getaway and were very happy with it. The owner was flexible about our arrival time (a tad late in the evening) and was in immediate touch when we had questions. It was very clean and cozy, with everything you could possibly need including a kitchen full of gadgets and a library's worth of great books. My husband made good use of the organic garden and cooked a ramp-basil pesto our first night. Our dog happily bounded around the big yard and curled up on the many rugs while we read in the overstuffed chairs by the window. The house is about a 15 minute drive into adorable Rhinebeck and another 10 minutes to the Hudson river. Rhinebeck has a grocery store and a main street with adorable shops, great restaurants and a wonderful bakery. The house is also about a 30 minute drive to the FDR house and library--but be warned that the last tour leaves promptly at 4pm! We used the provided canoe often and swam in the warm, quiet lake several times. There are two houses near the property but we never saw another person. At night the croaking frogs and glowing lightening bugs kept us company. The house is plenty big enough for more than two people, but wasn't too cavernous for us, either. The only thing to be aware of is the access road to the house is a little rugged: it involves a steep climb up and over a ridge and it isn't paved--if we hadn't had good GPS we would have thought we were lost. Once we figured it out it was very easy, though. And really, who wants to leave the cabin, anyway? It's a place out of time and just what you need to relax.
