A Slice of Paradise
A Slice of Paradise
My husband and I stayed at this property for a week over Thanksgiving. We LOVED it. Here are some highlights: 1. Gorgeous, well-kept property with plenty of indoor and outdoor space--The indoor space includes a bright upstairs made of wood and vaulted ceilings. There is a large kitchen and dining area, as well as a sitting area with iPod doc, stereo, books, etc. The bedroom is spacious and includes plenty of storage space. The floor plan is open and the atmosphere is bright...lots of windows and nice views. The wrap-around deck surrounding the upper level is stunning...excellent views and comfy hammocks were a highlight of our trip. The downstairs is newly renovated and very well-done. It also has high ceilings and feels very bright. The two areas together would make an excellent arrangement for a family with older children or two couples looking to get away. Also, we did not experience any issues with bugs inside the property (there are lots of sand flies in this climate). The owners have gone to great lengths to ensure that all windows are well covered with special screens that keep out the tiniest of bugs (hard to find at other properties on Caye Caulker). There is a sliding door to the deck on the upper property, but we only used the main (front) door to insure better protection from the bugs. 2. Location--The house is on the south end of the island surrounded by lots of trees and ridiculously awesome views of the ocean. It is quiet and away from the bustle of the town, although you can easily get your fix when you want it. If you want to get off the grid, this is the place. You have access to a quiet dock where you can sit and stare at the ocean or you can take a dip in the calm waters. The ocean here is very still and often times looks like glass. Breath-taking. 3. Bikes--This property is about a 10 to 15 minute bike ride from the center of town. One of our favorite parts of our vacation was the daily bike ride to and from town. It is definitely dark at night, so I would recommend bringing headlamps (although there was a flashlight at the property). Locks are also included. 4. Owners--We were lucky enough to meet the owners of this property during our stay. They are incredibly kind, conscientious, and just down-right awesome. They take a lot of pride in their property and ensure that it is comfortable for guests. It's a little scary to find a house online, and they proved to be very trust-worthy. Their manager, Michael, is helpful and professional.

Peace and Quiet surrounded by Beauty
Peace and Quiet surrounded by Beauty
I found exactly what I was looking for with this property: solitude, out of town, privacy and peace and quiet. This was my 7th trip to Caye Caulker; I have always stayed in town where there is an abundance of "life" around you and stores and restaurants are close by, this was a nice change. I would have stayed for a month if possible. I will definitely stay here again. The house is fabulous with everything I needed to feel comfortable. I asked the taxi to stop at the store before going to the house where I could buy all of the supplies I needed and not have to go back into town right away. Everything in the house worked really well. Having a phone come with the house was very nice allowing easy access to taxi ($5 to town) and property manager. I enjoyed tea on the dock every morning along with some yoga and got to see dolphins jumping in the sea as well. There is a very nice "I" dock in the house and I enjoyed a lot of music! There are bugs everywhere in Belize, stay in the breeze if possible which in this houses case is on the north and south sides of the deck, also cover up when the sun starts to go down with pants and long sleeves. I kept the doors with screens on them open when I was there to allow the breeze to come through, yes the west screen would blow open with the breeze but was an easy fix by clothes pinning the closure to the metal safety gate. Window slats I always kept open but tilted down in case of rain. When the sun wasn't shining the PM turned on the generator making sure I had all of the electricity I needed; which I did. Caye Caulker Moto: GO SLOW Cheers!!

Not what we expected.
Not what we expected.
My husband and I rented this property for our honeymoon. Based on the description, we were expecting a romantic getaway spot. This property was far from that. I will say that it was a beautiful location- great views and nice privacy. We also enjoyed the town and bike rides. There were several major issues that made our trip less enjoyable than we had hoped: 1. It was very hot inside during the day and sometimes at night, even with fans. 2. The solar power was inadequate. We couldn't use the coffee maker without a power outage, we didn't have enough power to run two fans all night long. 3. The bugs were awful outside from sundown to sunset- good luck enjoying that sunset without sustaining multiple mosquito and sand fly bites- even with bug spray on. Towards the end we couldn't seem to completely avoid them in the house either. The screens on two of the doors had magnet closures that opened every time the wind blew, so we started keeping them closed midway through the trip, making the house even hotter. 4. We were using the "If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush.." method to save water, since there is limited water. The smell in the heat was far from romantic. 5. There were no door nobs on any of the doors, only handles. The doors wouldn't stay closed without being locked with the one set of keys we had. This included the bathroom door. 6. The path between the house and the town is very bumpy, and a little overgrown. We got used to it, but in the beginning, it was pretty scary to navigate at night. There are lots of small animals on the path day and night, which is kinda cool, but scary when you can't see well. 7. The description says you can snorkel off the dock- true but you can't see much. The water visibility was poor, and your not actually on the reef. You have to take a trip to do a decent snorkel. Overall, I would say the house is beautiful, but we had lots of issues.

Owner response: We wish we new of your concerns during your trip. We would have been happy to assist you in making your stay more romantic. Caye Caulker, Belize is, after all, a warm sub-tropical island destination. Our description does not say that we have air conditioning. However, the authentic Belizean architecture and carefully planned seaside position of our home does allow for ample trade-winds & sea-breezes to flow through the home very nicely in addition to the fans. Our brand new solar system provides adequate power. Our House Manager could have made adjustments if only he had been contacted. My wife & I lived in our home for 5 months last year and we were only bothered by bugs at dawn & dusk, but not throughout the whole day. Bug coils were very helpful. There are highly efficient bug netting screens on all of the 13 windows and we also installed magnetic screen closures on two of the five doors leading to the verandas so you have your choice to use the magnetic screens or not. We have helpful tips on how to conserve water. Excessive flushing is discouraged but if you actually begin to notice an unpleasant odor, then it is obviously time to flush. We installed a new 5,000 gallon water catching system with a 1,000 gallon back-up auxiliary tank and we have never run out of water. Again, we wish you would have communicated your concerns to us so that we could have assured you there is enough water for all your necessities. Regarding door knobs & latches, we have asked our house manager to look into improvements that may be needed. We provide free bikes for our guests to travel in and out of the Village. The seaside/jungle path is one of the most beautiful roads on the island. There are many rare birds, parrots, wood rails, iguanas and crabs that also enjoy crossing and using the path too. There are many taxi services available to bring you back & forth to the Village for a very reasonable fare if you do not enjoy night-time bike travel. There are many colorful tropical fish to see right at the swimming dock where the water is usually crystal clear unless it is windy. We even see many dolphins swim by. However, nothing can compare to the guided snorkel tours at the nearby Barrier Reef. Guided tours will even pick you up and drop you off at the dock for your convenience. Thank you for enjoying the "beautiful location, views, privacy and biking" as you described. We are continually striving to improve our beautiful home with all our guests' best interest in mind.
