Perfect destination in the midst of all the DC sites
Perfect destination in the midst of all the DC sites
Having tired of hotels while visiting relatives in DC we decided to expand our VRBO experiences. What a wonderful change from standard DC hotel rooms! This flat was comfortable, well equipped and located in an extremely secure area of town. We found this address to be incredibly convenient to both the sites near the Capital/Mall/Union Station and the vibrant Eastern Market/8th St restaurant area as well as several Metro stops. Be sure to wander up to H Street and down to the revitalized Navy Yard/Anacosta River Walkway too. Plenty of breakfast/lunch spots around if you don't feel like bringing food in but we ate a few meals right in the apartment -everything needed was in the kitchen. The owner also provided some great ideas for restaurants if needed, since we have several "locals" in the family we had some old favorites to hit ( Matchbox). Overall, one of our most relaxing and comfortable trips to DC.

My husband and I spent a week in Washington DC the first week in October 2013, and we could not have asked for a more perfect location. The night we arrived, we walked to the end of the block, and had the most beautiful, picturesque view of the capitol, which is only a couple blocks away. Since we were there during the first week of the government shut down, we walked to the capitol everyday, and even were able to witness the House and Senate proceedings on several occasions. This apartment was in close proximity to most everything. Since we didn't rent a car, we were pleased to find a bike rental station only a block or so away - we rode bikes everywhere, which was a blast! We were within walking distance of many great restaurants, including We The Pizza, Burrito Brothers, Good Stuff Eatery, and of course, Starbucks. The apartment was absolutely adorable. Every thing was clean and decorated beautifully. Being from Texas, where everything is BIG, the small rooms and narrow hallway took a little getting used to, but this is obviously the standard for these quaint older buildings. We loved the fact there was a washer and dryer in the basement, which meant I didn't have to do a ton of laundry once we returned home. The bed was pretty comfy, but could use some better pillows. Thick, plush towels and bedding were comparable to a luxury hotel, We loved the Keurig coffee maker, and the fact the coffee pods were provided! The hardwood floors, vintage fireplace and blue & white bathroom gave this place a classic DC feel. Gene, the owner, is fantastic! Prior to our arrival, he sent us emails suggesting great places to eat, visit, and even things to do in the event of the government shut down. He stopped by on our first day there to make sure we were getting settled and see if there was anything we needed or that he could do. He even brought us a bottle of wine (and extra coffee!). He was prompt at responding to emails and phone calls prior to, and during, our stay. Gene is a great guy to work with and we appreciated everything he did to make sure our vacation was one of our most memorable. Overall, we could not have picked a more perfect place to stay in DC. We would highly recommend this property, or any others that Gene has to offer. Next time we visit Washington DC, we will definitely will contact Gene and request this great location. This was our first trip to DC and this was a great place to stay. The unit was immaculately cleaned and was exactly as presented in the pictures. The owner was there when we arrived and treated us to a bottle of wine and showed us around the apartment answering any questions we had about the heating/air conditioning, locks. the TV, etc. There was also a Keurig Coffeemaker and a selection of coffees for our use. He also recommended some great restaurants and non-Government run attractions, since we were there during the Government shutdown. There are LOTS of restaurants within walking distance, along with the Eastern Market which offers some great fresh pastas, meats, bakery goods, etc. and has a Farmers Market/Flea Market on the weekends. We used public transportation to get everywhere (both the underground Metro and buses) and were only a few blocks away from both. We really loved the neighborhood, felt completely safe walking around at night and would definitely stay here again.

National mall here we come!
National mall here we come!
Dad and I came down from outside of Toronto to visit the mall and see the Nationals play ball. Upon arrival we found that we were staying on the last residential block closest to the mall located at the Library of Congress. Gene our host provided us with tips on places to eat and places to see all of which we were pleased with. He even dropped by to say hello the morning after we arrived and gave us an quick walk around the neighbourhood sharing the history with us. Thank you Gene! While we had a rental car it remained park the entire time due to this awesome location. 1.5 blocks from out front step were bikes from Capitalbikeshare.com (be sure to download their app). This provided easy access to the farther attractions at the mall as driving in the mall is complicated (for new comers) and walking will definitely tucker you out! Only 4 or 5 blocks away was Union Station which serves as the staging point for many of the bus tours. The bus tours provided us with the best way to see everything then decide what we wanted to do. After each busy day in the mall it was nice to return to our beautiful 1880's brownstone rental. Gene had mentioned that the entire area is a historic site. You'll notice as you walk through the neighbourhood that each façade, every window, all the doors are true to the period. The rental itself is well equipped with a full kitchen with everything you need, a Samsung Smart TV keeping you connected, 3 Air conditioners. Key coded entry ensures safety and its nice to not have keys with you all day long. Gene even installed a Kurig coffee maker with a great selection of coffee's for us. Again, proving to be the host with the most. All in all the experience was great. I highly recommend this location as it cannot be beat!

Working in Congress, finding the right place to stay was of utmost importance. I couldn't be happier in my choice to stay at this property. On arrival, the unit was very clean, fully furnished, and ready to occupy. This location is within walking distance to some of D.C.'s best spots. Just minutes away is the U.S. Capitol, The Library of Congress, the National Mall, and a plethora of retail and restaurants. I loved the fact that I could walk to work, walk to a restaurant, walk home, and then go on a jog and see some of the country's beautiful landmarks. Also, this property is within a 10 minute walk to two different metro stops, including Union Station. From there, you can access metro or train. In addition to the great location and amenities, I cannot forget to mention the history of the building. The building was finished in 1880 and many historic items can be seen in the unit. Beautiful hardwood floors, vintage light fixtures, and other antique features make this an amazing experience. I would recommend this place to anybody trying to find a great location in the Washington D.C. area.

Why the Owner Chose Capitol Hill:
Since being built in 1880 numerous Senators, Congressmen, artists, and academics have all resided at what is now Hill Flats. The building was previously used as a lecture hall and residence for scholars conducting research at the Library of Congress which is across the street. Due to the buildings immediate proximity to national monuments, the National Park Service and Washington DC has designated Hill Flats a Historic building and has registered it under the Capitol Overlay and Fine Arts District. This designation ensures that all preservation is conducted under the direction of the Architect of the Capitol. Hill Flats has been meticulously preserved while ensuring that it meets modern comforts. If you are looking for character and historic charm there is no substitute.
