This property offers a solar powered charming two bedroom one bathroom cabin with a fully equipped kitchen and two screened in porches and is located in the heart of the Smith River National Recreation Area. The list of recreational opportunities is endless. Just step outside and find yourself surrounded by a biologically diverse variety of mammals, birds, reptiles and fish including river otter, beaver, black bear, northern spotted owl, endangered Del Norte salamander and tailed frog, chinook salmon, coho salmon, steel head trout, cut throat trout, and countless bird species. The Giant Redwood groves are just minutes away with trails suitable for a wide range of interests and abilities from easy walks or hikes to more challenging adventures. There is a wealth of information on nearby trails and river access available at the cabin, or ask your hosts, Billy & Kitty Jones, to email you information ahead of time for planning purposes.
The Paradise trail head is a short drive from the ranch, and the old Kelsey Trail head is just minutes away. Part of the Kelsey Trail is wheelchair accessible from the Big Flat Campground. Check the information binder at the cabin for a list of activities, destinations and current events in the Smith River National Recreation Area and other parts of the Smith River watershed.
A short drive downriver gets you to Jedediah Smith State Park where you will find 10,000 acres of primeval redwood groves and a diverse array of plants and wildlife.
The beaches and swimming holes near the cabin are great places to rest or play in the soothing waters of the Smith River.
Most folks that visit us find that they have everything they need here on this secluded property, but if you are interested in exploring the outlying area there are ocean beaches just forty -five minutes away for beach combing, surfing, fishing and whale watching.
A great coastal destination is Tolowa Dunes State Park which is the 'center of the universe' and ancestral land of the Tolowa Dee-ni'. Here you will find wetlands, dunes and miles of secluded ocean beaches accessible by well maintained trails that are ideal for walking, cycling, and horseback riding. There is also a horse camp located in the park that offers stalls, an outhouse, fresh water and picnic areas. This is a biodiversity 'hot spot' for 500 plant species, 315 bird species, 400 mushroom and fungus species, 50 land mammal species and 21 fish species. There are also forty-three sensitive, threatened and endangered animal and plant species that have been recorded here. They include the western lily, bald eagle, peregrine falcon, brown pelican, western snowy plover, Aleutian cackling goose, marbled murrelet, green sturgeon, tidewater goby, steel head and coastal cut throat trout, and Oregon silver spot and seaside hoary elfin butterflies. The rare silvery phacelia is found nowhere else in California. This place is truly magical!
Horse back riding in the recreation areas is absolutely spectacular. We don't offer boarding facilities at the cabin at this time but it is in the works for the near future. . There are several boarding facilities nearby if you bring your equine companions. There are also guided trail rides available in several locations. The city of Crescent City is a forty-five minute drive from the cabin. There you will find basic shopping and a small downtown area that offers restaurants, casinos, several art galleries, antique stores, a museum, an indoor swimming pool (saltwater) that has a slide for recreational swims and lap swimming times as well, a bowling alley, movie theater, Battery Point Lighthouse, a farmers market in summer and beautiful beaches. The surfing here is excellent. The options are endless and ever changing. It is our goal to help you enjoy your stay so please feel free to ask questions and request information.
