Aloha & Welcome to Bwanabob’s "Hawaiian hideaway" - a deluxe vacation rental for couples (or 1) in So. Kona, on the big island. We are the best location & elevation for visiting the big island & all it has to offer. Not only are we affordable, we're a steal!
If you are seeking a unique & delightful place to stay in Kona without sacrificing luxury or paying a small fortune, we invite you to stay with us in our spacious Banana Bunalow. We're happy you found us & invite you to take a closer look at what makes us unique & special in a place with literally thousands of cheap condos, hotel rooms, resorts, beds & breakfasts, apartments & units to rent! Please see our other cottage, the Jungle Cottage at VRBO #732542 . It’s on the same private estate at $120. Per night.
The Banana Bungalow is “perfect for two people”; it is a free-standing, separate, self-contained house. It's downhill from our home but we cannot see it due the placement & landscaping. It is very private & secluded; not even visible from our private road.
IF YOU CRAVE BEING AWAY FROM IT ALL, the Banana Bungalow will suit you just fine. Feel like you’re all alone on this exceptional tropical estate. No other buildings spoil your views. This privacy was accomplished by artful use of physical space & beautiful landscaping. Much care was given to insure each house & occupants would not be visible to any other house or occupants. We think it's pure genius.
Decor & surroundings are Tropical; elephant bamboo furniture & bamboo trim everywhere. Top of the line bedding & towels, real oil painting by Gauguin (ok, it's a well-done copy). The “feel” ? Like being nestled in the midst of a jungle. It faces the ocean & has a beautiful custom-built lanai. Water, coastline, ocean & beautiful sunsets views. Surrounded on all sides by tropical vegetation. Palm trees, coffee orchard, flowering vines, amazing flowers so different than "mainland" flowers. All pretty spectacular according to our guests, "looks even better in person that the photos!".
We try to give each couple whatever it takes to make their time here enjoyable, fun & memorable. A stay at BwanaBob's is something special & much different than any B & B, condo, hotel or resort.
The ambience is authentic old Hawaii & Tranquil. Peaceful, Zen-like & the first thing that stuns most guests is the mature tropical landscaping. It rivals any Kohala coast 5-star resort or botanical garden. The variety of flora is astounding! Green is the word, everywhere in all directions. It’s more than 50 shades of green, it's 100 shades of green! Your eyes will love the cool refreshing feel of the place; it just feels good to be awed by Mother Nature. The variety of exotic tropical flowers is exceptional...not all will be blooming though; it's luck of the draw to see what will be when you arrive. The photos below show what's in bloom now in the month of August.
As you may have heard, much of Kailua-Kona is a pretty much a typical tourist trap; shops selling Hawaiian items made in China, overpriced restaurants with mediocre meals that leave you feeling empty & unsatisfied. Alii Drive, the main drag has nonstop traffic sounds from 6am to 2am. The fans just don’t do the trick at these lower elevations. It's one of our main draws; the fact that we're in a cooler more temperate zone at the elevation of 1250' compared to temperatures below that. A stay at the shore is not only hot, it is noisy. Open the windows & the roar of hundreds of air conditioning units & traffic noise assaults your ears. Close the door & be hot & uncomfortable. Sadly, we know this from experience, "pre-internet".
This is why the "trifecta" of so. Kona, Kealakekua, Captain Cook & Honaunau are so popular. So. Kona is a suburb & much quieter & less frenzied than Kailua-Kona. Plenty of choices in good restaurants, a nice grocery store, weekly farmers' markets & some glorious beaches & snorkeling will keep you busy; or hang-out here, it's easy to spend a day home when it looks this good. On occasion you'll see spinner dolphins frolicking at Hookena beach or the Captain Cook monument area. Everything is a short drive away & not in bumper to bumper traffic.
We have several areas to explore & take photos; sit & just be one with nature. Rare green grass to lay on including a hill to roll down should your inner child feel like playing.
Years of planting exotic flowers, bushes & fruits has paid off. Plentiful apple bananas & many many other fruit await you. We have statues & mosaic artwork around the grounds. The lower part of the property is a coffee & macadamia orchard. Enjoy our own 100% Kona coffee, a pound per week is included.
Lovely Tibetan pheasants roam the grounds, along with the occasional turkey or two. The absence of dogs on our grounds ensures the wildlife lives here in harmony.
Although our house is here too, it’s not visible to either Bungalow or Cottage. We don't see you & visa versa. Need anything? We’re always home please just give us a call. We're here but out of sight, up a hill & blocked by vegetation. After your arrival we are available to help if you need anything, including info about where to go & what to see. We respect your privacy & space. We're usually up for visiting & "talkin story" if you desire but watch out, we can talk for hours once we get started!
No other vacation rental in so. Kona is like us, although they try. Years of seeing the competition take our exact words & phrases to be copied onto their advertising is more than upsetting & disheartening; it's really "muddied up the waters" causing guests confusion & the inability to discern the differences between one Vacation Rental & another. Not all So. Kona Vacation Rentals are the same; there are many important differences that will either "make or break" your honeymoon or vacation. It's one of the biggest factors in having your honeymoon or vacation be all you want it to be.
These are some issues to think about when planning your trip to the Big Island: the Banana Bungalow is not attached to any main house or other building. It is neither an apartment nor a condo underneath a house. It is a separate house on a private & gated 3 acre hillside estate above the highway with fabulous ocean & sunset views.
We are not in a lower elevation residential sub-division between a very busy highway and road. There are no pool noises, no screaming kids, no barking dogs, no slamming car doors, no traffic noises & you’ll rarely run into another person on our grounds. We have a groundskeeper that comes in twice a week to blow the leaves & keep the place looking manicured.
As mentioned earlier, there is a place to fit every budget, style & type of visitor to the island. In So. Kona the two most popular vacation rental choices are as follows: a stay with us at BwanaBob's, OR a stay in a lower elevation, “motel-like” setting, hotter elevation house with 2 attached apartments (now advertised as condos) with a 3rd option of a separate bedroom. Folks, this means the possibility of being in very close proximity of 6 other people including the owners & 4 cars coming & going at all times of the day & night, and a dog, all on a half-acre of land. Is this the kind of honeymoon or vacation you had in mind? Is it private, secluded & romantic? We mention this because we REALLY want our guests to know exactly what to expect when they arrive.
We strive to have happy guests & really knock ourselves out to make your stay perfect in any way we can. This property is too precious not to be shared & enjoyed with others. Rarely is a place so beautiful as this. As our guests have said "it's a little bit of paradise". If we sound like your kind of place then we’d love to have you stay with us! Please call or email with any questions or to check availability. We do not use VRBO.com’s calendar! We like to talk with you before we take your reservation to make sure we are a good fit. So please use our dime & call us on the toll free number if you have questions or would like to make a Reservation.

Please note: we do not use the VRBO.com Calendar folks. We like to talk to our guests in person to assure we are a good "fit" & understand your expectations for your Honeymoon, Anniversary or Vacation. before accepting your reservation.
Please also note: Full disclosure; we do live on a quite bumpy road which is short, about only 1/2 mile long. 4-Wheel Drive is not necessary, but IS a great way to explore places on the island that are not otherwise accessible. What IS necessary for this road is a vehicle with a HIGH clearance from or off the ground. This is due to the road dipping down & back up in several places. A high clearance prevents dragging the bottom of or damaging your vehicle. An Economy car is almost always find UNLESS it is one of the newer models that have become quite low-slung & prevalant in 2015. One of the best cars our guests have loved is the Chevy Spark which is also thrifty on gas. Guests that have never driven "off-road" or on a multi-surfaced road might find the road intimidating. The road is comprised of a bit of each: gravel, lava rock, dirt, asphalt & some cement. Most guests embrace the road with anticipation of a really fun & wild ride & are happy as a bug when we personally escort them to their Cottage or Bungalow. If you are not comfortable with this perhaps another place would be better for your stay on the west side or Kona side of the Island. Just fyi, no guest in all these years has ever been unhappy enough about the road to leave. We do understand we are not everyone's cup of tea, er, well, 100% Kona coffee. We would love to show off little slice of Tropical Paradise & make a your Kona dream vacation come true.
We accept ALL MAJOR CC: 50% deposit due at time of booking; balance due 30 days prior to arrival. $100. will hold your Reservation for bookings 6 mos in advance.

These are just some of what we think are the "must-see" destinations of this really incredible Island of Hawaii.
In no particular order: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (perfect day trip). The really sacred & beautiful "Place of Refuge National Park" & also they have a gorgeous little park as you drive past the parking lot, veer left and it will take you to some of the most beautiful scenery in Hawaii. Sometimes there will be locals playing the ukelele if you hit it right. The colorful Painted Church, the Mauna Kea Observatory at the top of Mauna Kea Volcano where telescopes from so many nations are in constant operation peering into the crystal clear sky. You'll need 4-Wheel Drive to go up & one night per week is open -house for non-scientists. Our closeby & favorite destination; the lava flow at Kalapani, where it came in 1986 and covered the hightway...awesome. Sadly no longer available to see due to recent volcanic activity destroying even more homes.
The really cute Artist village in Holualoa, also more Art Galleries & a Collectibles Mall in Kainaliu town, just up the hwy a bit. Sunday Farmer's Market in Captain Cook near the Manago Hotel. For some: All the Crazy Zoo of Tourists & Jammed-up Parking in Kailua-Kona Village (if you like that kind of place), nearby in So. Kona are some wonderful Gourmet restaurants including the renounced Keei Cafe, the highly regarded Mi's Italian Cafe, theKona Coffee Shack where tons of great desserts await, and the Kona Cafe at the bottom of our road within walking distance. (the trip back uphill is a killer though). Tons of all kinds of beaches here in So. Kona...the beautiful "protected waters" of tropical fish by the Captain Cook Monument in the Kealakekua Bay, Two-Step with wonderful snorkeling really close-by... just sit on rocks and slide your bottom into a water-wonderland of fish and beauty. Our personal favorite beach is Hookena, just a few miles south of us, with a lovely road that serpentines down from the highway to sea level and for one moment, your breathe will be taken away by the water view! So many different beaches all the way up along the coast to the Kohala area. Touristy Expensive Resorts and 45 minutes north of Kailua-Kona, it's just not our idea of the "real Hawaii". When every flower bush, palm tree & plants are brought in & mus be watered to stay alive, (ie, just not in a real rainforest because they do not naturally happen at sea level). Some are beautiful for sunbathing though, while other beaches here are spectacular and really do look like "Tahiti"; ask when you arrive & we'll share our wealth of knowledge. Puako and it's bay will blow your mind. Up north enjoy Hawi, a sweet little town at the top of the island; wonderful eats, shops & pristine gardening too, it's a kick. Such natural island beauty. Almost all places are within a 2 hour drive! Take Day-Trips to the Volcano, the Hamakua Coast, see Rainbow Falls in Hilo, and everywhere, so many different & absolutely CUTE places & towns! 7 nights is really NOT enough to even lightly graze the offerings on thisvery special island. Waimea (or Kamuela) is "Paniola" or "Hawaiian Cowboy Country" with fabulous restaurants & ranch! Beyond Hawi drive to the "road's end" and then get your legs climbing down to the very private ocean & beach below. It's going to be a heck of a climb back up, but so worth it.
The South Kona area is a trifecta of 3 towns; Kealakekua, Captain Cook & Honaunau. It's considered a "bedroom" community or suburb of Kailua-Kona & is a very desirable location for a Kona Vacation & Stay. The area is very tropical and jungely, but that refers mostly to the properties ABOVE the highway, or "mauka" as we say here. The properties below or "makai" are so much more humid & hot compared to our wonderful & super comfortable elevation.
Temperatures here on our hill are almost always a lovely 76 degrees. Our Cottage & Bungalow are so different than almost any other kind of place..the kind of place easy to spent a contented day at home, while hanging out or just reading & relaxing. No white-washed sterile kind of "box" of a room causing anyone to feel stir-crazy & "gotta get out of here" feeling! Just peaceful, tranquil & serene, & yeah, for the hundredth time, tropical. We know this because of our personal experience of our first time on the Island. Pre-Internet, our stay in a run of the mill condo on Alii Drive was a disaster. Traffic noise all day & all night. The fans did nothing to cool the place down & the roar of non-stop traffic on Alii Drive, the main drag downtown, prevented us from opening the windows. We hope we've given enough information to help make an informed decision. We also hope to see you on your next visit to Kona, on the Big Island.
The beaches, restaurants, little towns & other sights to see are in no way complete & exhaustive...more of just a little "taste" of what awaits here!
Year Purchased: 1996
About the owner: Aloha, we came alone to Kona to get married about 2 decades ago & on a whim spent a half-day looking at real estate. We stumbled onto this property that day, got married the next day & flew home the day after that. We had to buy it; it was THAT stunning. We moved in a year later & never looked back. The property had been built & developed by a contractor as his "dream home". Situated on the slopes of Mauna Loa, an extinct volcano, the biggest bulldozer made was used to turn this place into a "golf course-like" beauty. No expense was spared, even including Canandian Glacial Top Soil so that spectacular green lawns could be grown throughout the property. We are just the lucky recipients of this contractor's personal tropical haven, although we have spent the last 20 years adding more & more tropical fruits & flowers to the mix. Hundreds of banana trees were planted which produce year round nanners for us & our guests. The lava rock walls were made from the freshly bulldozed earth; they are beautiful. Only when we had been here about a year did we realize the amazing property we bought was a "One-of-a-Kind Gem. These green lawns & all the gorgeous mature tropical landscaping have brought us & our guests so much pleasure over the years. Even the bird songs are amazing here. We don't think there is another vacation rental comparable to this in the South Kona area. We would love to share it with you too. It does take a village to keep it looking manicured & beautiful & yet we offer all this for so darn little...Honestly, a little house for only 140. per night? Well, we think it's a deal & know that any cheap motel in any major American city would cost as much. We offer you all this & yet we are only minutes to civilization, beaches and shopping.
Why the Owner Chose Captain Cook:
We do not think you will find this kind of natural beauty at any other location & place for the low rates we offer. Hands down we are a one-of-a-kind property & completely unique in the South Kona area. Guests that are looking only for a place to hang their hat & sleep at night may not appreciate all we have to offer. That is fine because as we said, we want Happy Guests who have made an informed decision on where to stay while visiting Kona! For many others though, this higher elevation tropical property is the deal-maker & Candy for the Eye. And a not so gentle reminder of just how awesome Mother Nature can be when all the elements come together. The right soil (volcanic), the right climate (balmy), the right amount of rain & the right amount of sunlight, & of course the continual tending to & love. We have spent two decades adding & tending to a plethora of tropical flora & anyone who loves tropical plants & tropical flowers will be thrilled to see what grows here. Our place is literally brimming over with a treasure trove bounty of tropical fruits & flowers. These are some of the goodies to enjoy: year round always seem to be tons of “apple” bananas (more of a custardy instead of mealy texture with a slight hint of a tart granny smith apple & absolutely delicious & not available anywhere on the mainland), papaya, lemon, macadamia nuts and then it’s anyone’s guess as to what will be “in season": lemons, starfruit, lychee Surinam cherry, zapote, longon, pineapple, avocado, breadfruit, lillokoi (passion fruit), cheremoya, oranges, tangelos, grapefruits, coconuts & of course, our 100% Kona coffee. A pound per week of our own whole bean 100% Kona coffee is provided in addition to all the fruits & nuts you can eat.
The Unique Benefits at this Bungalow:
Tropical flowers are really amazing & so “exotic” compared to mainland flowers. There is one vine here, so awesome & incredible we want to scream “Hey, Look at This!” It’s called a Jade Vine & ours has giant blooms of turquoise & periwinkle blue flowers! We have posted a photo of it here. Many visitors to Hawaii come year after year & stay in hotels , resorts or condos & even never know something this unbelievable exists. It’s not always in bloom but if you’re lucky you’ll see it The blooms are about 14”-20” long & contain hundreds of smaller “fingers” that are crescent shaped with a blending in of these two colors that is hard to describe. Simply stunning! We love our property & enjoy seeing our guests be happy! We welcome just a select group of couples per year. We are choosy in who we take & most of our clientele are professionals, business owners & folks who are adventurous & are looking for an off-the-beaten-path kind of place. Our guests are mostly self-sufficient & we give as much interaction as desired. Your privacy is paramount & something we treasure for ouselves too. Our low rates are in no way indicative of the quality & beauty of what we have to share wtih other couples & guests. We offer all this & for a so little; mostly because this place is just too special not to share it with others! All this & yet we are just minutes to civilization, beaches, restaurants & shopping. Surely there must be something not so great here? Yes, we tell our guests before taking a reservation that we live on a very bumpy road that is 1/2 mile long & above the highway. It is multi-surfaced road with bits of lava rock, gravel, dirt, some cement & some asphalt with many dips & bumps. A vehicle with HIGH clearance off the ground is a must. Not 4WD, just high clearance! Please call us for more details or if you have any questions! We are here to make your "tropical island" vacation dreams come true.
