I love walking, so I walk to the restaurants and theaters nearby for regular entertainment. The Santa Monica Pier is a longer walk or a very short car trip, and it is full of activities being enjoyed by people from all over the world. The Venice Beach Boardwalk is also in longer but easy walking range, all level with great sidewalks, and has that friendly beach-hustle atmosphere that makes you know you are somewhere really different, with an open air marketplace of booths carrying almost anything you can imagine. There are two farmers markets in the longer walk or superfast drive range as well, where I get my produce, eggs, fresh corn tamales, eggs, flowers, and see many people I know along with the occasional Hollywood star with family relaxing with the rest of us. The Getty Museum is just down the Pacific Coast Highway from here, Malibu is a few minutes further down, and if you are adventurous you are in Tijuana in about 2 hours! For a longer visitor, the famous California Missions are a lovely drive away, the closest being in Santa Barbara, less than two hours getting to a destination well worth the time.

About the owner: I already live in this canyon, and love it so much that I hope to live here forever. This house is 500 steps from my current house, so I am easy to find if you need anything. I have two sons taller than me now who can help out with any internet or tv questions, too! I moved to California from Northern Virginia in 1972, and never looked back (except to visit).
Why the Owner Chose Santa Monica: This canyon is a very special place, and properties do not come available very often. This particular property is very special, with a unique location not only extremely close to the ocean without the hassle of being actually on the beach, but nestled between two channels that literally run along either side of this long V of a property. The channels meet at the end point of the lot, and you can stand on that point and watch ducks in the channel, sailboats on the ocean, and talk to the neighbors sweet Weimeraner Ina across the channel who likes to gaze lovingly at me when I am there. I bought this house to move into myself once my two sons leave the nest in a couple of years, so all of the renovation, furnishing, appliances and planting has been chosen for best quality for my own eventual use. I love this house, I love its tiny one block street with sweet neighbors, I love the amazing variety of birds overhead, and I especially love this sweet untouched house that I got to rehab and preserve all at once. It feels like a place my grandparents would have left to my parents, with the combined furniture and practical details that they would have brought to it. The house is great for people who appreciate an easy to navigate neighborhood with a beachy casual feel to it, sophisticated surroundings easily gotten to, advanced amenities, but only one TV (in the living room). Disclaimers: The rooms are not as BIG as the fisheye lense makes them look, but they are generous and comfortable. Also, the property is not suitable for young children because of the channels on either side, which involve cement walls maybe 15' straight down to a cement floor. Also, the house is not furnished with twin beds or high chairs or cribs; it is set up for two couples upstairs at most, and one person in the bonus room with the smallish sofabed, and in a pinch the couch is extremely sleepable too.
The Unique Benefits at this Bungalow: This house grabbed my heart the very first time I walked the exterior. The yard was lovingly planted and developed by the sole homeowner, a landscape architect with a contemplative and conservationist nature, who resided here from 1957 until last year. He maintained the house beautifully, but did not change anything at all, so I had the delightful pleasure of simply working with what was perfectly in place but old. The yard is amazing and sooths you just by walking the old rare green stone he installed as a pathway. The house was built intelligently with every square inch used, pocket doors allowing the kitchen and/or laundry rooms to be shut off from the main house, and big glass doors allowing heart stopping views of the yard and ocean and access to the brick patio just outside. It is just perfect.
