Yes the whales are this close! Mele Kohola means “Singing Whale” in Hawaiian and they will entertain you day and night (in season, of course, December through March). Even when the whales are not in season, you’ll enjoy the unobstructed bi-coastal views with waves crashing against the sea wall. There is a view from almost every room in the house including the front and back lanais. The ocean in front of Mele Kohola is very deep and the coastline is shaped in a gentle cove tempting the whales to play very close to shore.
Once inside, you will see the pride and care taken in the classy, upscale, tropical decor, with lots of room for a large family but cozy enough for a romantic getaway. Guests love the oversized chaise lounge and extra high king bed. If you must work, there is an office provided for you with a roomy desk and high-speed Internet. The house is located directly on the ocean in the popular neighborhood of Hawaiian Paradise Park, about 15 miles south of Hilo.
Beautiful furnishings and artistic area rugs on parquet floors provide style and comfort during your stay. The main part of the house is on the second floor with two bedrooms, two baths, and the office. The large back lanai has an outdoor table and barbecue, and there are two front lanais, one off the living area and one off the master bedroom. The first floor has a large open room with living, dining, and kitchenette areas. That level also has a bedroom with a large king bed. The home comes fully equipped with everything you need in the kitchen, and it has a satellite TV, DVD/VCR/CD, and washer/dryer.
Out front is an oceanfront Jacuzzi spa with views along the coastline — dramatic waves crashing against the cliffs with a view that constantly changes. As an extra bonus, you can start your morning with a beautiful sunrise on the horizon. Yes, this is paradise!
The quaint towns of Pahoa and Keaau with several restaurants and interesting shops are about 20 minutes by car. Hilo is less than 30 minutes away. Other nearby attractions include Ahalanui (a thermally heated pond that’s a favorite local swimming spot), the Kapoho tide pools (great for snorkeling), and the end of the road at Kalapana where lava from the Kilauea Volcano covered that historic community in the early 1990s.
Mele Kohola is located on the Hilo side of the Big Island, which is the tropical, windward side. The area is lushly green, nothing like the desert areas or barren moonscape in some south and west sections of the island. Mele Kohola is your perfect base for day trips to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the city of Hilo (Hawaii’s most Hawaiian city), the Hamakua Coast with its waterfalls and botanical gardens, remote Waipio Valley, and perhaps even Mauna Kea for the adventurous. We suggest spending part of your Big Island holiday at Mele Kohola, then drive to Kona and spend some time on that side. The Big Island really is big — too big to drive around comfortably in a single day.
Our owners take pride in the vacation rentals they offer. We only accept properties with wonderful views of the ocean or the surrounding beauty. We are easy to reach by phone and usually respond to email requests within a couple hours. We hope you will be our guest very soon!
