- Drawn by year-round warm weather, colonial-era architecture and the freshwater Lake Nicaragua, travelers from around the world are flocking to Granada. Eco-tourists will love visiting the dormant Mombacho volcano, sailing on the lake and ziplining through the trees. Fans of spa treatments and shopping will find plenty to do, too. Nicaragua travel tops the New York Times’ best in travel for 2013. Ranked third out of forty-six select destinations, Nicaragua made it to the top of the list. Nicaragua is a country of thriving culture, history, wildlife and boasts a landscape dominated by pristine rainforest and miles & miles of serene sandy shoreline. Its avenue of volcanoes is stunning and protected by national parks. Conscious of their natural treasures, “eco” is both practiced and preached in Nicaragua. Nicaragua Lake is vast; it rivals that of Lake Titicaca in its beauty and grandeur. The lake’s Ometepe Island is the largest freshwater island in the world. It is composed of two volcanoes and an isthmus that connects them. Hiking here is a must. Beyond its natural features, Nicaragua’s nicest colonial city, Granada, offers great dining, exquisite cathedrals and museums from the Spanish era. ...moreless

I can't say much that other reviewers haven't already said, other than that 4 days in this spectacular villa made me feel like I was a King. From the moment we walked in til the minute we left, I marveled at the exquisite details that were preserved for 250 years. Gorgeous tiles, beautiful antique furniture, attention to every detail in it's construction... This was by far the most relaxing, peaceful home my family has ever stayed in. We rarely left the house! Grab some pastries across the street at the bakery and eat them at the seemingly endless dining table. For lunch, I highly recommend trying Vigoron from one of the vendors in Parque Colon (I ate it every day). Take a walk down Calla la Calzada for bars/restaurants/shopping/people watching, or just get some food to go and eat it at the villa! Trust me, no restaurant in town can match the elegance and ambiance that you'll experience at Casa Blanca. Book your stay at Casa Blanca with absolute confidence. I'm already planning a return trip with some friends for next year. Can't wait!

Owner response: We are thrilled that you and your family enjoyed Casa Blanca as much as we do. We too sometimes don't leave the house except to grad a quick bite and then just come back to the hammocks and pool. The pastry place is relatively new and I like it; last October I grabbed a few breakfasts there. Glad you enjoyed Granada and Nicaragua and hope you get to come back again soon.
Just behind the Cathedral, by the only pedestrian street of Granada, there is this tall and mysterious door behind a heavy grid... one enters, at first hesitantly, and suddenly one is dazzled: high ceilings, stunning ceramic tiles, custom hardwood furniture, everything both tasteful and spectacular at the same time. It takes a few hours (it was days for me) before realizing what most of the other reviewers have correctly said: the house is huge and allows for privacy for everyone, everything works and is luxurious, location is simply the best in the City, the city is beautiful, historically meaningful, magical with life and food and parties and truly "abroad", the touristic excursions out of town are stunning and yet easy. There is even an American community of expats, made up of mostly tasteful, well read and respectful people. A very special experience altogether. And yet... what you'll remember most of all is this unique emotion every time you enter the house; you know that it is a rare privilege and that it is yours... for a while.

Owner response: Hello, Your prose leads me to believe that you not only visited Granada in December but also for the annual poetry festival! Thank you for your gracious review. G&M
Just the name sounds romantic…and what a wonderful surprise when we arrived! This classic villa is 5-star all the way. The owners spared no expense in lovingly restoring this historic villa. Maintaining all the original 250 year-old details while integrating all the modern conveniences. Set in the heart of historic Granada, one block from the central square, the location couldn't possibly be more perfect. Everything outside at your fingertips: restaurants, bars, entertainment, spa, wonderful excursions, easily accessible day trips to volcanoes and amazing lakes, the ocean, quiet beaches. Saying nothing of the historic architecture and gracious Granadians. Yet the thing that keeps coming back to us over and over is how preciously special the home itself is. Upon entering the massive wooden front door, the view took our breath away…the open courtyard, the pool, the luscious flora, the furnishings, the beds, the linens….Oooh la la! Highly recommended for anyone interested in a magic, romantic and adventurous getaway. And to top it all off, the owners could not be more gracious and helpful in every way. From a party of two to twelve you will have everything you need.

Owner response: Hello Art! It always makes us happy to hear from someone that enjoyed Casa Blanca as much as we do. We fell in love with Granada and it's people too. It's the biggest reason we orginally got the house. Hope you make it back down soon. Melanie & Guillermo
I spent a week in the villa with 10 friends. We had plenty of space and ate together, or at any of the tasty nearby restaurants within a 1 - 5 minutes walk. Actually, we didn't have fixed plans as many just wanted to swim and read. That's the relaxing part. The glamorous part is entering the villa, which is breathtaking. Photos cannot do justice for the exhilarated feeling that the high ceilings and beautiful finishes do. Renting a car makes it easy to tour the mountains, volcano, crater lake, the ocean and many other sites. Dress casually for drinks at nearby bars and a little more glam for dancing at clubs. I plan to return with my family as the enclosed courtyard makes it easy to keep track of toddlers. Thank you for a fun stay.

Owner response: Great that you and your friends enjoyed our house!! Next time you're there spend an afternoon at Laguna de Apoyo. It's a beautiful lake in the crater of an extinct volcano. It's an almost perfect circle almost 5 miles across, surrounded by walls of jungle. It's spectacular and calming at the same time. I swear that there is something special about the water... I can explain it but it feels "soft." It's about a 15 minute car / taxi ride up there and there are a couple of restaurants right at the waterline. A perfect afternoon consists of lunch, a beer and a swim.
We were so impressed when we arrived at Villa Blanca. It's an oasis of Central America! A truly luxurious experience! It's right off the central square, so the location could not be more convenient. But you could actually just spend your vacation inside the Villa Blanca (except for the occasional grocery store run and visit to the top steak house around the corner). We were over worked executives looking for a relaxing break and that's exactly what we got. The mattress was divine so we slept loads, read books in the courtyard and swam in the pool. After a few days, we did venture out around the city and environs. We did some zip-lining nearby and also visited some of the lakes. We could also get massages at a nice spa nearby for unheard of prices. I believe we had a few 90 minute massages. It was hard to leave, but we did return to NYC well rested and relaxed.

Owner response: So happy that Casa Blanca let you unwind and get rid of all that stress. As a fellow NYer, I totally understand. I've locked myself in the house for a few days before re-emerging refreshed. :-) and the massages.... bliss and so cheap! I don't know if you tried but we call the spa and have them send someone. I spent a wonderful week here with a group of friends. I booked based on reviews and recommendations and the Villa surpassed every expectation. The photos do not do it justice and it was clean and beautifully maintained. The house is tasteful and comfortable with plenty of spots to spend a lazy day - the breezy rooms, hammocks by the pool or the comfy beds. The outdoor kitchen is well equiped and situated for fun communal evenings and outdoor dinners. The pool is in a beautiful private courtyard. The location is amazing, walking distance from some great eats and the main square if you want a little more action. There are also many accessible activities - including hikes, ziplining and volcanos if you're up for a little drive (self motivated or as part of a tour). Go to the steak restaurant pretty much next door for the best meal in town, and Cafe Nuit for a little salsa dancing where you will definitely be shown up by the locals. This was one of my favourite vacations, I have great memories and I am definitely going back!

Owner response: Dear Dalia, Thanks for leaving such a wonderful comment! You feel much the same way we do about Casa Blanca. It's a little oasis of pease and tranquility with all sorts of things to do just outside the door. And yes the steak place next door, El Zaguan, has the best steaks I've ever had. Each time I go back, thinking my memory of it will be better, I am always happy at how delicious they are! Please let us know when you want to come visit again. :-)
Amazing Thanksgiving in Granada Villa
Amazing Thanksgiving in Granada Villa
If you are thinking of going to Granada - STAY HERE!!! My family and I celebrated Thanksgiving in this amazing a GEORGEOUS villa! First off, Melanie and Guuillermo were amazing hosts who were able to help coordinate so many wonderful daytime adventures, delicious restautrants, and fun evening activities. This villa is in the middle of everthing, yet when you are inside it is an oasis of quiet and peace. The photos don't do justice to this plush or wealthy home. Everything is refined with amazing details. To this day, it has the most gorgous dining room table I have ever seen; an amazing location for family dinners! Each room has its own bathroom and shower and the pool is divine. There is music and a wonderful kitchen large enough for everyone to move around. Everything is open air, so there is a feeling of being outside even though you are tucked away behind thick wooden doors. Little birds come to visit and you can see the dome of the local church from the different parts of the house - - truly a breathtaking home! Then just out your door are tons of amazing resturants, shops, art classes, site seeing adventure tours, crafts, music... it was amazing! Enjoy!

Owner response: Hi Jennifer, I am very glad that you and your family enjoyed Thanksgiving at Casa Blanca. We have never been in Granada at the same time as guests; we were jealous that you'd booked the place before we decided to go down ourselves - us staying in a hotel for those 4 days made us appreciate Casa Blanca even more. That aside, we were very happy that you liked the house and that we were able to help point you in the direction of some of the special things to discover around Granada and Nicragua. You and your family were wonderful. Guillermo & Melanie
Tranquility in the heart of busy Granada
Tranquility in the heart of busy Granada
We had the most wonderful stay at Casa Blanca. The home provides the best of both worlds – it feels like a peaceful sanctuary but it's located amid the hustle and bustle of downtown Granada. The home itself has been lovingly restored to its former glory with every aspect of the original features are reflected in the design and layout. We have a large family, nine in total, but there was ample space for all of us and we could comfortably have had about four more guests. Although the house is located amidst some of the best restaurants, we cooked in a lot and particularly enjoyed the kitchen and wonderful dining table that seats 14 people. Given the heat and humidity we enjoyed the indoor/outdoor aspect of the house – where else would you find a swimming pool literally in your living room? Although there is so much to do and see in Nicaragua there were days we opted to just stay home and enjoy the tranquility of Casa Blanca. And of course having a daily maid service was a blessing as the property was kept beautifully all the time. All in all, I don't think I could rate this home more highly enough. We had a wonderful vacation and have memories that will last us a lifetime.

Owner response: We are so happy you and your family enjoyed the house so much. A couple years ago for Christmas, Melanie and I brought both our parents, our brother & sister plus their better halves. Between both our families we had 10 adults. We stayed almost a month and we had a fantastic time. When we originally bought and refurbished the home it was our dream to have a special place where we could go to spend time with friends and family. I am glad that Casa Blanca was that special place for your family too.

Casa Blanca has been restored with extremely good taste and with every comfort in mind. The rooms are elegant and the beds extremely comfortable. I appreciated the fully equipped kitchen as well! The courtyard with a lovely pool is secluded and romantic. The location couldn't better with more than a dozen really good restaurants within a few blocks. Highly recommended.

Why the Owner Chose Granada:
This is really a special place. It was built in the 1750s and is one of the oldest buildings in Granada. It underwent a 3-year restoration to bring it back to it's original splendor. The house has original floors, ceilings and doors dating back to it's construction along with all the modern amenities one would need.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Centrally located. Just one block off the main park. Casa Blanca is tucked in behind the town's main cathedral and on Granada's main pedestrian street and restaurant row, Calle Calzada. The house has the traditional colonial design with a central courtyard full of beautiful tropical plants and a deep and cool 40 ft long swimming pool. Once you step into the house, you're in your own little private paradise.
