Los Zacatitos house description

This gorgeous architectural dream home was completed in December 2012 when I rang in the New Year in my new home away from home.

If a true get-away is what you're after, you've come to the right place. Casa Jane is located in the small community of Zacatitos in Baja California Sur, Mexico. It is approximately 12 kilometers or 40 minutes by car along a partial dirt road. The drive itself is magnificent. Zacatitos hugs the Sea of Cortez's white sandy beaches and aqua blue waters to the south, and the mysterious dreamy desert to the north.

Inhabited primarily by Americans and Canadians, Zacatitos remains virtually untouched by the tourism that exists only miles away in Cabo San Lucas. The house runs 100% on solar power. There is no electricity in Zacatitos. That said, it has all the modern conveniences - a washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator with ice maker, barbecue, wireless internet, and iPod dock. There is no TV, but there are books, magazines, games, and a swimming pool.

Since the home was architecturally crafted, the lighting on the property is stunning. However, care must be taken with use of power. (Instructions are at the house with details on how to live with solar).

There are two bedrooms, each with a queen size bed. Blow-up air mattresses are available if you should require extra sleeping arrangements. There are two bathrooms upstairs and one full bathroom on the main floor that has an amazing outdoor shower. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking and entertaining.

It is a fifteen minute walk to the beach and a five or ten minute walk to Zac's Bar & Grill, where you can get great food and beverages. Halfway to San Jose along the coast road is Buzzards, another local eating establishment, Drunkin Sailor (great ceviche and fish tacos), and a little more pricy is Flora Farms and Tamarindos, both lovely restaurants that serve fresh food from their own farm and gardens. Zacatitos has a small Farmer's Market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings in front of Zac's Bar and Grill. There’s another larger market in San Jose on Saturday as well as the Art Walk every Thursday evening. A fish truck periodically drives through Zacatitos to sell fresh fish to local residents Saturday morning.

San Jose is the nearest town. It's small and quaint, and has many fine restaurants and shops. The area boasts fabulous fishing and surfing. Information on who to contact and where to go is listed in the house manual. Definitely check out Guacamaya and Hangman restaurants in San Jose. Grrreat food!

John and Stephanie Pepper are my house managers and will come by to clean the pool, check on the generator and solar and water plants. They are basically available to you if anything should go awry at the house. Stephanie's email is:
peppster@cabopepper.com
Her Mexican Cell Number: 624-171-4325 which you can dial just like that from your US phone when you arrive here to get a hold of her.
They live right up the road.

Airport or rental car pick up is recommended for your first trip out as Zacatitos is a distance from San Jose and is a bit tricky to find the first time you drive the road. You can rent a car (jeep or truck recommended) and my prop managers can take you out the first time so you know the way or you can use him for the entire vacation. Your choice. Contact them directly to make arrangements. They will also include a stop at the Mega grocery store so you can stock up, or do a pre-shop for a fee.

The best times to stay are from November to June, however, any time's a good time in the Baja.

Enjoy your stay at Casa Jane!

* The house was featured on the cover of the April 2013 issue of Canadian Architect Magazine and was also in Wallpaper Magazine. It was designed by Campos Leckie Architects in Vancouver, BC, and built by APA Arquitectura in San Jose del Cabo.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM CABO SAN JOSE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO CASA JANE:

Distances will start from under the “Benvenidos” or “Welcome” sign, just past the Thrifty Car Rental building.
Exit the airport. Turn right and follow signs to route 1 south, towards San Jose del Cabo. You will be driving on a four lane highway headed south toward the ocean. After approximately 13.5 kilometers, get into the left lane and look for a tall bright yellow monument on your left. It is called the “La Flor del Desarrollo”, or “Monumental Sculpture”. It looks like a giant yellow flower. You will see the ocean in front on you. There is also a golf course on your left, the “Fonatur”.
Go left around the monument. Look to your right and cross route 1 north bound traffic. Go straight on Paseo De Los Cabos. If you miss this exit, don’t panic. Take the next exit left towards San Jose del Cabo. Turn left and go east on Paseo Malecon San Jose. If you continue right you will be heading west, incorrectly towards Cabo San Lucas. Turn around and go back towards San Jose del Cabo.
Go south east on Paseo De Los Cabos. Turn left onto Paseo Malecon San Jose. You will see the Hotel Royal Solaris on your right. After approximately 1.7 kilometers, turn left at the third or last traffic circle. The sign will read “Centro Historico” and “Puerto Los Cabos”, the new marina. “Puerto Los Cabos” will become a very familiar sign. Follow it and your trip will be simplified. If you miss the last traffic circle, don’t panic. You will see the Hotel Presidente Intercontinental on your right. Just make a U turn and go back to the last traffic circle and turn right towards “Centro Historico”.
From the above traffic circle go north on Boulevard Mijares. There will be a cemetery on your left. You will pass a Botanical Garden on your left or the “Jardin Botonica”. Stay in the right hand lane. You will go approximately 1.2 kilometers. You are looking for a road that turns right or east towards the beach, it is called “Benito Juarez.” There will be a Vantage Realty sign diagonally on your left, with a large map of the East Cape. The road sign will say, “Puerto Los Cabos”, “Publaco La Playa”, and “Zacatitos”. If you miss this right turn, don’t panic. Just follow the road into the Town Square or shopping district of San Jose del Cabo. Make a U turn when you’re able and go back to the traffic circle, go around it to the left and once again, exit east towards the beach or East Cape.
From the Vantage Realty sign above, you will be driving east toward the East Cape and “Puerto Los Cabos”. You will be on a new bridge that goes over an arroyo and estuary. You will come to your first of three traffic circles after approximately 1.6 kilometers. Look for the now familiar “Puerto Los Cabos Marina” sign. Go around the traffic circle and take the second right turn. The sign will say, “East Cape Road”, “Zacatitos”, “Laguna Hills”, “Buzzard’s”, and “El Encanto”. Drive carefully, there is no shoulder.
After approximately .8 kilometers you will come to your second of three traffic circles. Go around the traffic circle and take the second right turn. The sign will say, “Zacatitos”, “Buzzard’s”, and “El Encanto”, After approximately 5.3 kilometers, you will come to a third traffic circle. Again, drive carefully. You will turn right at the traffic circle and head toward the ocean.
From the above traffic circle, you will be headed toward the ocean. After approximately 1.8 kilometers, you will come to a T in the road. The pavement will end. Turn left toward Punta Gorda Point. The sign will point to Los Zacatitos. If you turn right you will go toward Buzzard’s on the left or Laguna Hills on the right.
You will now be traveling north east on a very bumpy dirt road for approximately 6 kilometers. The ocean - the breathtaking Sea of Cortez - will be on your right. You will see Punta Gorda Point straight ahead. Drive slowly. This is a rough road. You will pass several homestead sites. Drive up and around Punta Gorda Point very carefully. There are no guard rails! Once around the point you will overlook the community of Los Zacatitos on your right.
From Punta Gorda Point, the road will curve around to the left and then veer right. On your left you will see a commercial building site, or empty dirt lot. On your right, you will see a large concrete structure with “Santa Cruz de Los Zacatitos” painted on it. Next, you will come to a Y in the road. Stay to your left, following what looks like a main road. Do not pass through the entryway to “Los Zacatitos” (even though you are still entering Los Zacatitos).
Follow straight along this road until you reach another Y in the road. There will be a surfboard stuck in the dirt that tells you that Zac’s Bar & Grill is up ahead. You will stay left and veer off on the FIRST LEFT past the surfboard. It will not look like a road but it is. It will dip down and up around and you will come out on a more obvious road.
Keep following this road. You will come to a T crossing. Go through it. There will be a trailer on your right and straight ahead you will see Casa Jane, the big, white modern house on the knoll. Keep going, veering left and turn into the parking space in front of the aluminum doors (which are the electrical rooms for the house)
Congratulations! You made it. Enjoy your stay.

                          Car: Recommended

Casa Jane is located off the grid. It has all the amenities but is away from the fray in a quiet community approximately 40 minutes east of San Jose.

There are many good restaurants in the area, but only one out in Zacatitos - Zac's Bar & Grill. Zac's offers good food and grrreat margaritas, as well as a community atmosphere. It's the place locals gather.

There is a Farmer's Market in front of Zac's every Wednesday and Saturday morning, and a larger market in San Jose on Saturday morning till about 2 pm. During high season, the art district of San Jose has it's Art Walk every Thursday evening, which is a must do.

There is golf, fishing, paddle boarding, and surfing all at your fingertips, as well as miles of white sandy beaches. You can check in town for rentals or ask at Zac's and someone may be able to help you out.

Todos Santos is a great day trip. If you have the time, La Paz is a two hour drive but to do it right, you should plan to stay one or two nights.

Guacamaya's and Hangman are two great authentic restaurants right in San Jose, and Cynthia's serves delicious organic fare. I also like The Drunken Sailor, which is by La Playita. Flora Farms and Tamarindo's serve food direct from farm to table, as well as local fish and meat. They are more high-end and will require a reservation.

There is so much to do in the area, and it's also the perfect place to do nothing. Grab a good book and sit by the pool, or pack a snack and take it to the beach and enjoy hours of surf, sand and Baja breezes. There's nothing like it.
