Halifax barn description
Our light-filled house and antique barn will provide you with a unique, inviting and cozy home away from your home that will lend a sense of history and character to your visit to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotian Artist Catherine McKinnon found this 150-year-old hand-hewn, post & beam barn in East Tracadie, Nova Scotia. She and her family purchased, dismantled, reconstructed and attached the barn to their home in Purcell's Cove, a 15-minute drive from downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia.
This open concept barn feels large, and yet intimate at the same time. With a south-facing wall of windows overlooking Halifax Harbour, guests can get a bird's eye view of all the shipping traffic coming in and out of this seabound city.
You will love the large, homey, farmhouse-style kitchen which is directly attached to the Barn.
The upper level of the house has 3 bedrooms (2 with stunning ocean views), a living room with a spectacular view, full bath and laundry area. A rustic deck adjoins the living room from which you will witness sunrises, moonrises and the vibrant nature of the wilderness backlands that surround our home.
The spacious loft in the barn provides additional flexible space to accommodate guests.
This one-of-a-kind home & barn easily accommodates 8-10 guests with plenty of room for movement.
There's a lobster fisherman who still fishes out of our cove and we are surrounded by wilderness trails that wind their way around three pristine swimming lakes. If you're a hiker, mountain biker or birder, this is your paradise.

- Our home is located on a quiet cul-de-sac that is surrounded by a peaceful wilderness area; it is located on the edge of the Purcell's Cove/William's Lake Backlands. For many generations, citizens of Halifax have enjoyed swimming, mountain biking and hiking in these Backlands. We are within hiking distance of 3 pristine, wilderness swimming lakes: Purcell's Pond, Colpitt Lake and Flat Lake. This area TEAMS with wildlife. The abundance and variety of bird species is mind-boggling. Purcell's Pond is home of the most industrious beaver we've ever witnessed. For the daringly adventurous, there are mountain-biking trails that wind their way through granite barrens, along stony 'whale-backs' and over bridges maintained by Halifax's mountain-biking elite. ...moreless

Urban Barn - A place you'll want to come back to time and time again
Urban Barn - A place you'll want to come back to time and time again
My family and I had a great time at "The Urban Barn". The place was a big part of us enjoying our vacation. The kids (7, 8 and 11) just loved the house as there was so much to do. Arts and crafts abound, a piano (my kids all take piano) and the acoustics are great in the house, along with them picking blueberries right outside. We even found old Etch a Sketch toys that the kids had never seen... We never heard the dreaded "I'm bored" while at the house. Of course they could be dead tired too as we kept them busy at all of the attractions nearby too. Catherine has done an amazing job with the layout of the place and the photos don't do it justice when you arrive. You will be amazed with the layout of the barn and by the amenities available. There was no TV there, but you shouldn't need one if you're here. The Urban Barn is close to downtown Halifax and other attractions around Halifax. I was able to get downtown to the harbour in about 15 minutes every day. I was also able to get to Peggy's Cove in about 45 minutes... Catherine was great at answering all of my questions before and during my visit! Some places we went: The Dingle (Sir Sanford Fleming Park) - water is a bit cold, but a lot warmer than Crystal Crescent Beach which we also went to. Murphy's Cable wharf for Deep Sea Fishing - pricey, but we had a great time catching our fish. You're in the harbour and don't actually head out into the Atlantic so boat was pretty stable. Close to a Sobey's so we didn't eat out for dinner or breakfast. Harbour Hopper - Need to take this if you don't know the history of Halifax and its landmarks Citadel - great place there... take a few hours to enjoy all of it... get there before noon so you can hear the noon day cannon. Atlantic playland - ok this is quite dated and the rides aren't that memorable (most are the same as those at a fall fair), but the park is empty and the kids can ride till they collapse :) there is a water slide as well which is great it if's hot.. Peggy's Cove as well as the Peggy's Cove boat tour... well worth the ride. Clay Cafe - If it is too hot or raining then go here and you and your kids will be enjoying making their own pottery for hours. Just make sure you have enough time so you can go back after they fire the pieces. and and and.... Great time and a great place! I will return...

a great place
a great place
We are two families with 5 little kids (3-8yr old) and we rented this beautiful barn house as our base to tour Nova Scotia. We absolutely loved our stay. The house was amazing and we couldn’t believe how big it was, very spacious for larger groups and perfect for kids. We had a wonderful rest at the home while the kids were running around us happily, playing and enjoying all the wonderful things this house have to offer for kids. While the weather is nice there are lots of exploring options around, and while it was raining we enjoyed the view of the ocean, the city and the surrounding natural beauty. Everything we needed was there at the house. Great trip -we all wished we had a longer stay and would definitely like to come again! Thanks Catherine for sharing your lovely home and being so nice and considerate.

I'll be back!
I'll be back!
The first thing I said when I entered the barn was (and still is)...I want one! The effort and attention to detail that has gone into the restoration by the owners is truly a labour of love. This is a great place for families. The view is gorgeous and the location is ideal - close to the city of Halifax and it's amenities, the ocean and cultural activities of various flavour. The owners were very helpful and accommodating. I would recommend this property to anyone and everyone. We really loved it and look forward to returning!

Unique in every way, with wonderful views, this property manages to be in the country yet minutes from the city. It is full of light, and offers everything for the family. No fear of rainy days if you're renting here. l can't imagine a better headquarters for a Halifax area holliday.

What a nice owner, and what a great place! Endless backyard with blueberry bushes. Amazing cool barn attached. Try a funky country feel of a place and skip the hotel!
