Bay Star Cottage is a great place for a family vacation or weekend getaway. Here you can relax in the hot tub, curl up with a good book, play board games, or watch a movie. The cottage is walking distance to the beach, shops, and restaurants of Anchor Bay. It is centrally located to drive to art galleries, hiking trails, shopping, golfing, wine-tasting, and nearby coastal towns.
The cottage was recently remodeled with hardwood floors, granite countertops, and new kitchen appliances. The kitchen is open to the dining and living area to provide a relaxing area for guests to socialize. The cottage has central heat; however, guests are welcome to build a fire in the woodstove insert. The sunroom has skylights and large windows to take in the views of the redwood trees and a glimpse of the Pacific ocean.
The first bedroom has a queen size bed and a door out to the hot tub on the rear deck. The second bedroom has a king size bed and a door out to the side deck. The sunroom has a futon couch which can convert to a full-size bed; however, this room is not considered bedroom accommodation since the sunroom is not heated. A washing machine and dryer are in the utility room, accessed from the side deck.
The hot tub, charcoal BBQ, and patio dining set are located on the rear deck. An outdoor bench is located under the redwood trees in the front garden area. A flight of stairs lead to the front entrance from the driveway; or guests can avoid the stairs by taking the sidewalk to the front entrance (sidewalk is located just up the street from the driveway).
From the deck, sometimes you can hear the seals and sea lions off in the distance. On clear nights, Anchor Bay is one of the best places to see stars.
While no one can guarantee sunny skies, the weather in Anchor Bay is often clear when other parts of the coast are foggy. Anchor Bay Village lies in the heart of the 'banana belt' region. This part of the California coast has a unique microclimate: a warm column of air from inland spills over the protective coastal mountains, making the area warmer, with less fog and wind, than the surrounding area.
This cottage has 2 half bathrooms. One half-bathroom has a sink and toilet. The other half-bathroom has a sink and Tub/Shower. Bathrooms are located across the hall from each other....moreless
Famed for being at the heart of the area's banana-belt climate, Anchor Bay enjoys more sun during the fog days of summer. With unspoiled beauty, pristine bluffs, a white sandy beach, huge redwoods, cool/clean air, one doesn't come back to nature at Anchor Bay....one is enrobed in nature.
Considered an undiscovered gem along our coast, roughly a few hundred people call Anchor Bay home. Many others vacation here or weekend here, anxious to settle into its peaceful green surroundings, escape the brutal inland heat of summer, or finish that book you left last weekend.
South-facing Anchor Bay beach is sheltered by Haven's Neck promontory to the north. This allows for the accretion of soft sands along Anchor Bay beach during the summer and fall, with beachgoers and small craft being sheltered from the prevailing northwest winds. Sandcastle contests are held each year.
Property is locally managed by Coasting Home. Cleaning fee, reservation fee, pet fee, and local taxes apply. Refundable security deposit also applies. Please contact "Coasting Home" for a price quote.

A short walk down the hill from Bay Star Cottage is Anchor Bay Beach, which was listed as one of the top 10 beaches in the western United States by Sunset magazine in its July 2009 issue. It is a sandy beach with a year-round waterfall. During low tide, you can see starfish, urchins, and other tidepool critters. We have even seen dolphins and sea lions frolicking in the bay. There is good fishing and abalone diving when in season. The Anchor Bay campground charges a $3 per person entrance fee for access to the beach. Other charges apply for launching watercraft. Between the house and the beach is Anchor Bay Village which has two restaurants, a coffee shop, a grocery store, and more.
The cottage is located just off Highway 1; and there are dramatic ocean views as you travel to visit the nearby towns of Gualala, Point Arena, and Mendocino. It is located 5 miles north of downtown Gualala where you can find grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacy, medical clinic, vet, coffee shop, kitchen store, boutiques, post office, restaurants, art galleries, hiking trails, and more. The restaurants and shops of downtown Point Arena are 11 miles north of the house; however, if you go a little further, you can walk on the pier, climb to the top of a lighthouse, visit a casino, or hike ocean bluff trails. The charming coastal town of Mendocino is a little over an hour's drive from the cottage.

Year Purchased: 2008
About: We live and work in Sacramento. We have two children and love to ski, backpack, and go to the beach.
Why Gualala: Our dream was to own a house by the ocean. We have spent time on much of California's coast but when we stayed in Anchor Bay on our anniversary, we fell in love with the place. We love the small village and great protected beach. The cottage is a great place to get away.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: There's not many places where the redwoods are so close to the ocean. We like the way the cottage has a woodsy feel yet is within walking distance of the beach.
