Costa Rica is a paradise for lovers of wildlife, adventure, blue skies, ocean waves lapping sandy shores and rivers winding through lush forests. It's a slower pace with a laid-back rhythm.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, are adventurous, self-sufficient, and in good condition [not appropriate for VERY small children]--- read on. If you want The Ritz, Hotel Marriot or a new concrete house or condo, you're at the wrong site. The tree houses are very basic.

Be sure to click on "Photos and More Information" for Tad's [Popo's]web site at the bottom of this listing------------------------------------

There are two "Treehouses" built of local woods and tree trunks, with upper and lower level porches with tables, chairs and hammocks. These are in a compound close to the main house.[The BEAUTIFUL beach is just several hundred yards down the back road]. All the windows are screened but you will rarely see any flying insects. The bedroom is on the upper level with the bath below in the midst of lush planting [the lushest time is after the green season kicks in,-- June until Jan./Feb.

Each treehouse sleeps four in one bedroom with an overhead fan, a bedside reading lamp, a double bed and twin bunks, plus a private bath with heated water. There is a cooler for the guests' convenience in the room.
The days are in the 70's [nights] and 80's[days] and the nights usually cool enough to use a light blanket. March, April, and May are the warmest months,[hi 80's] November, December and January the coolest.

IN SEASON,the howler monkeys arrive and the toucans and humming birds come to feast on the papayas left for them. There are also roosters and dogs in the distance. It's a different world, with more natural sounds than we are used to. Most people love it, but maybe it won't appeal to you.

Tad [Popo], Susie and the children [3,12,14 and 16 yrs.]are totally bilingual and love to interact with guests. They, naturally, can guide and advise you about everything there is to do. Tad's main businesses are teaching surfing [see his website at bottom of this page], river and sea kayaking in his 2-person, "sit-on-top" kayaks, float trips down the nearby ecologically diverse Rio Ora or out to the nearby islands in the ocean. There is also great, protected ocean swimming, and any adventure trips you might like to take.
There are also biking, snorkeling, horseback riding, waterfalls, hiking, canopy tours[fun!], Ultralight rides, and on and on - all nearby.
Rentals of bikes, horses, etc. are available nearby.

Carrillo is still a laid back little village, [but developing fast]! Within a 5 minute walk, there are funny little restaurants, a few upscale ones, and the Southland Guanamar Resort and Sport Fishing Hotel just 100 yards down the road. It has a bar, restaurant, casino, Internet access, and all the worldly conveniences you may go and use but won't find intruding on your peace at Popo's.

If you pine for funky little shops, bars, music and lots of activity, Samara is just three + miles away, on a great new road, and has been [by Costa Rican standards] heavily developed. At the many diverse restaurants there, and in Carrillo, you will find great meals for much lower prices than you are used to.

The local "casado" [rice and beans, salad, veg. and meat or fish, ---all on one plate] goes for $3.50 - $4.00 and the prices go up to $10.00-$18.00 for delicious steaks and jumbo shrimp. Soft drinks and juices are about $1.00, beer runs $1.50 to $2.50 and liquor is equally inexpensive. These prices may have gone up recently, as they have everywhere!

The beach, Playa Carrillo, is just several hundred yards down the dirt back road [4-5 minute walk],it's one of the most beautiful, unspoiled beaches in Central America. You will usually have it all to yourselves. Its white sand stretches for over a mile around a semi-circular bay rimmed by shady palms. The water is kept calm by a reef at the entrance to the bay which makes it ideal for swimming [great for children] and for water sports.

The surrounding exotic flora and fauna remain untouched. There is a grass airstrip nearby for a daily domestic flight from San Jose. At dusk, if you want a treat, stroll down to the beach and watch the flaming ball of the sun sink into the Pacific. Several times in the past few years, Salt Water Magazine has named Carrillo harbor as the top sport fishing spot in the WORLD!

Eco-tourists come to Costa Rica to get involved with the environment and to commune with nature. Carrillo is still Costa Rica as it was before all the developers moved in---but recently the developers have discovered it, too. Most eco-tourism places charge their guests highly for the privilege of living more basically than they would at home, but we just want everyone to have a chance to enjoy this before it's all gone.

Quite a few airlines fly into Liberia [about a 2 hour drive from Popo's] or to San Jose [about a 4-4 1/2 hour drive]. A RENTAL CAR TO ME IS A NECESSITY as the weather at the beach is hot during the day and distances to any places, other than the beach, are too far to walk, although bikes are an option. There is, however, FROM THE SAN JOSE AREA, a small plane which leaves very early AM and lands just next to your beach [about $150 round trip],and a shuttle service, which also leaves early AM from hotels in San Jose [about $60 round trip]. Both of these options require overnight stays in San Jose as they don't work with the available plane schedules.

LIBERIA does not have these services going to the southern Nicoya peninsula, where you will be. If there are more than 1 or 2 people, a shuttle service or taxi will cost about as much as a car rental.
