We got back home a week ago, and all 4 of us tell each other every day "We wish we were back at the treehouse." My husband, our 6 1/2 year old twins and I loved everything about Popo's Treehouses. The treehouse itself was the perfect size for us, it was cool at night and we could see monkeys, birds, butterflies and geckos right from our balcony. Susie and Tad are amazing. Susie helped us with our Spanish, gave us a wonderful breakfast every morning (including the perfect cup of coffee), arranged our surf lessons and took action photos of us learning how to surf. The surf lessons were great -- patient teachers and we felt like rock stars because we stood up! Tad took us kayaking on a bird-filled estuary that led us to a gorgeous, jade and jasper strewn beach. He taught us about the local flora, fauna, and food with intelligence and humor. Playa Carillo is beyond beautiful -- everything you read about it is true, and then some. I realize that almost everything I've said has probably been said in all of the other glowing reviews. But a final note: One night while we were staying at Popo's, we went over to Samara (the next town). One of my daughters fell and split her head open. The only clinic in Samara was closed, and we were told we would have to go to the nearest hospital -- which was miles away. Not only did we not have a rental car, my daughter was hysterical from the pain and the thought of going to a hospital. We called Susie and Tad, and they told us to come on back. We did, and Susie walked us over to a doctor in the neighborhood. She stayed there and translated and kept everyone calm while the lovely doctor took care of our daughter. What could have been a nightmare turned into a relatively short doctor's visit, with stitches and a couple of prescriptions for our daughter. She was completely fine, and her stitches have healed beautifully. I kept thanking Susie, who kindly brushed me off and continued to pour affection on all 4 of us for the duration of the trip. We feel lucky to have been there, and we cannot wait to go back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Sallie and Brandon, I'm so glad you have such great memories of Carrillo, despite Jane's scary head wound. We're glad Doc Julio was able to take care of it and hopefully Jane will only have happy thoughts when she feels her scar! Come back soon, we'd love to see you again.

My fiance and I stayed for 6 nights at Popo's! We immediately felt very welcomed by hosts Suzie and Tad and their children. Upon our arrival Tad suggested a wonderful local restaurant for lunch (Soda Colocho's) where we had the best ceviche of our lives! Throughout our stay we felt very welcomed and although we were there during a busy time for Suzie and Tad, they we so sweet and they made us feel like we were part of the family. We went on a relaxing kayak trip with Tad to Isla Chora where we snorkeled and sunbathed. We took two great surfing lessons with Andreas (Tad and Suzie's son) we felt like pros! I took a Spanish class with Suzie (she is very, very good!) We went to a hidden tide pool where fish swam around us, we visited La Selva Wildlife Refuge a 5 min walk away. And we LOVED Playa Carrillo! It's the most beautiful beach I've ever visited! Every morning Suzie served us the freshest fruit, coffee and toast and who can forget the night we had pollo con chimichurri.... :-) The treehouses are soo fun! There was a Howler on our roof the first night which was so exhilarating! Bring ear plugs if the sounds of nature disturb you, and I recommend to bring a little bag with dried lavender buds in it to keep away any ants. This is rustic living of the best kind, but you have to be prepared for bugs and having a few mosquito bites while you're here, it's all part of the experience! You're in Costa Rica baby!!! The most beautiful, friendliest place on earth. Right now we are seriously depressed coming back to the harsh Winnipeg winter...but we're still smiling inside because we know one day (very soon) we'll be back!!! Love Caitlin and James <3Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you Caitlin, we all had a great time with you nice people! I hope we'll see you again---keep up with your Spanish and surfing[!!!]. Regards, Susie and Tad

The treehouse was just what we wanted for our CR vacation. It is definitely rustic, but comfortable. Susie and Tad make you feel like part of their family. The hikes and hidden beaches are magical and there is very good food to be found. I'm very happy we weren't in Samara as the crowds and noise were not what I prefer. Carrillo is just perfect in my mind. For sure take a kayak tour with Tad and learn from his amazing knowledge and hear good stories. I loved the unexpected treasures to be found on the beach. I also highly recommend a surf lesson from Blue Barrel - Christian was amazing. A beautiful family. We'll be back guys.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway.
Owner response: We're delighted you enjoyed your vacation so much and that you really appreciated the laid-back life style here in Carrillo. We hope you come visit us again, soon! Susie, Tad and the family

What a great time we had in Playa Carillo! Thanks to Suzie, Tadd and their children for such a fun week! We were there during Christmas week with our 3 sons (8, 6 & 6 years old) and it will be memorable. The treehouse was a tight fit for us, but we really wanted to stay there so Suzie had an extra mattress and it worked out perfectly. The house has all the basics and the bedroom is all screened. It is simple but if you are used to camping, well this is even better because you have a stove and a small fridge and you sleep on a real mattress! Yes, there were some bugs, mostly at the end of the day, but there were bugs in all the other places we visited in Costa Rica. So bug spray and long clothes are a must when you visit a tropical forest. If you like to keep active, this is the place for you. You definitely have to surf! All 5 of us were standing up on a surf board on Christmas day... thanks to Chicho and Andre! We also went kayaking around Samara island with Tadd, a beautiful place to snorkel! You will love Tadd's stories, he is a character, lots of fun. Our children will never forget being invited to Noni's birthday party... its part of their travel stories now! Thank you Noni! You are a wonderful family! Thanks for making part of our trip a success!!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thanks for the great review! You were good sports, all 5 of you "squeezing in" the treehouse! Some guests are more susceptible to bugs than others, I'm sorry you were. Once you're acclimated, they never bite you. Hey "Dudes" I'll bet you miss the surfing-- back there in the cold! It was fun you could join in Noni's birthday party--I wonder what kind of "memorable stories " you have about it! Come back, again!

My 10 year old son and I travelled around Costa Rica for a month over the Christmas holidays and had a truly wonderful experience. We stayed at many different types of places along the way some real luxury resorts but Popo's stood out for us by miles from the rest. We began and ended our travels here in our great treehouse with the lovely tad,Susan and their family who really were fantastic hosts. waking up every morning surrounded by a panoramic view of the green trees, blue skies, nature and variety of wildlife is a truly unique experience that if possible everyone should experience at some time in there life! Popo's offers great kayaking tours (tad is a world of knowledge when it comes to the bird watching! you will see and learn so much!) and surfing lessons with andre were the stand out highlight for my son who fell in love with surfing and the whole adventure of the place and the unspoilt beautiful beach. He had never seen a beach like this before its stunning. I cannot recommend tad and susans whole treehouse living experience enough if you are looking for a great, good value for money and interesting holiday (a fabulous alternative to your standard big resort type holiday) with lots of activities for adults and children alike. I imagine it would be a lovely experience for those travelling as couples As well. Susan is wonderful she's taking care of the treehouses and making a nice breakfast every day for you, she was so welcoming to me. It was nice as I was travelling as a single mother with my son so to feel safe is an important factor to me. My son built a wonderful little friendship with tad's youngest son noni and we hope to be back again very soon. I know when Christmas comes around he will be asking me to go to popo's in Costa Rica!!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children.
Owner response: Thanks Rachel for your wonderfully written and complete review. It's reviews like this that give prospective guests such a clear view of what it's like here. We all hope you do visit us again, Noni really misses Zack--he says everytime he makes a good friend, he goes away again! They're all waiting at the beach ready to give him more surfing lessons.

Okay first off, you are supporting a hard working, amazing Costa Rican family when you stay at Popo's. As small lodging business owners ourselves, that is very important to us. The personal touches when you stay at a place like this are invaluable. From the recommendations to the stories that stick in your head long after you are back home. Popo doesn't wear a name tag....or for that matter a shirt. Upon arrival you will know who he is. The rest of the family is wonderful as well. Their 6 year old son joined us and our 3 year old daughter for lunch on a couple occasions and translated the menu! As many other guests have stated; this is not 5 star accommodations, nor is it 5 star prices. There are plenty of other places that will wait on you hand and foot if that is your style. However, if you are seeking a rustic, quiet place to sleep, shower and prepare meals you will find no better spot. The town of Carrillo is super mellow. The beach is spectacular. The people are great and there is cold beer for sale steps away. Samara is ten minutes away. A funky bigger town where you can grocery shop, dine and buy funny street items. Really liked it there but glad we stayed where we did. Especially with young children. We left an amazing place in Southern CR with a free house sitting offer on the table to see Carrillo and Popo's. So happy we did. It really filled out the trip and gave us introspection on different parts of the country. Did an amazing kayak trip, surfed perfect waves and best of all, made new friends. We have been thinking about Costa Rica a lot during the long Vermont Winter. Sweet visions of my daughter feeding the pet squirrel, fresh fruit hanging off trees and wildlife hanging from every jungle vine. Costa Rica is an unspoiled paradise and no more so then in Popo's back yard. I also get the feeling that no one there knows their back yard better then him. So pull up a chair, crack a cold Imperial and meet the Cantrell's. You'll be glad you did! -the O'Shea'sRecommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Hey Eamon, that was a memorable day of surfing! Remembering that should warm up some of those cold Vermont nights. As a fellow lodging owner, a good review from you and Shawna is high praise, indeed! I wonder if Quinn will remember feeding squirrels, etc. or if you will just have to keep coming back to visit us? We'd really enjoy that, Tad

Make no mistake; you’re not staying in a five star resort suite. However, what you are staying in is like five star camping; a kitchen with a sink, two burner propane stove and a fridge, a three piece bathroom, and a second floor with comfortable beds. As has been said, it’s rustic; and having been there, we wouldn’t want it any other way. The nights are comfortable for sleeping, and the fans upstairs and down along with the shade from the surrounding trees keep it quite livable in the daytime. Puerto Carrillo is a quiet, friendly town with numerous options in terms of eating and restaurants. Within a 5-minute walk you have at least seven options for restaurants and in terms of groceries the biggest store in town is 100 meters from Tad and Suzie’s front door. There is some very good food at these local restaurants, and the food quality is every bit as good if not better than at home. We ate everything and anything. And the beach…beautiful! Like…beautiful! White sand, not a stone, a band of palm trees tracing the curve of the beach, warm crystal clear water with foaming surf, spectacular sunsets… And perhaps the best part; no resort hotels lined up along the beach and few people. We took surfing lessons with Chicho, Tad and Suzie’s son, which was an absolute riot. You don’t come here without doing this; and if Chicho can’t get you up on a board nobody can. One of the cool things about Playa Carrillo is you have the amazing combination of great swimming and a diversity of waves for both novice and experienced surfers. We’re stuck now; we have to come back. We had a hard time leaving. And we count Tad and Suzie as our friends. Does a vacation get any better than that? Neil & Laurie (Petrolia, Ontario)Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Neil and Laurie, That is a magnificent review, anyone reading it would feel he/she had been transported to Carrillo for a brief visit. One of you MUST be a professional writer [or SHOULD be!]. I haven't been there in years, but through your review, feel it was only yesterday. Thank you! Betsy [Tad's Mom]

As of this writing, we are eleven days from Costa Rica. In the past, eleven days after a typical resort–type vacation life has gone back to normal and we’ve moved on; the experience and freshness of the memories fading like the tan. Not this time. We loved our 18 days in Costa Rica. We’ve never been there before and typically we don’t go back to where we’ve been; it’s a big world. But we will come back to Costa Rica. We spent 18 days experiencing Costa Rican culture unfiltered by a resort, and we have Tad and Suzie to thank for this. Tad and Suzie and their family are fantastic. The first member we met was 6 year old Noni (we un-wittedly had come to the back door), who Laurie fell in love with at first sight, and alternately talked our ears off and introduced us to dogs as he marched us up to meet his Dad. Tad has an encyclopedic knowledge of Costa Rican flora and fauna. His kayak tours are an absolute treat. And it doesn’t stop with the wildlife; he seems to know every nook and cranny of the coastline, the various towns and the local and broader history. Couple that with a great sense of humor and a laid-back personality and you have the formula for the ideal guide. Suzie is the picture of an earnest and conscientious host. She will bend over backwards to ensure your stay is enjoyable and problem-free. Fortunately for us, we were up early enough that at breakfast we had the coffee shop to ourselves, enabling us to enjoy Suzie’s company and conversation undistracted. The more we got to know her the more impressed we were. Laurie has a big interest in learning Spanish, and so took advantage of Suzie’s Spanish lessons. She is very good; Laurie had taken courses in the past at our local college and had been working through a CD course; her development in Spanish skills over the brief time we were in Costa Rica with Suzie was remarkable in comparison. The tree house is located in a grove of trees on the side of a hill. Lying in bed you’ll hear cicadas buzzing, geckos chirping, howler monkeys woofing and a myriad of birds from big green parrots to the pom-pom tailed mot-mots to the big Costa Rican version of blue jays. In the morning, we usually had the thump of an iguana landing on the roof and scratching his way up to the peak to catch some sun. Make no mistake; you’re not staying in a five star resort suite. However, what you are staying in is like five star camping; a kitchen with a sink, two burner propane stove and a fridge, a three piece bathrooRecommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for the GREAT review, it's beautifully written. We REALLY enjoyed YOU! I like the line about, "like 5 star camping" , very apt!

There are screens on the windows, but large gaping cracks in the doorway and floor boards. The treehouses are built just uphill from a creek. I counted 41 mosquito bites on one of my children's legs--most coming at night while asleep. The downstairs area is worse as it isn't screened in at all and very uncomfortable to sit and relax in at any time. Things got a little better after we doused ourselves with bugspray, but before we woke it had worn off and we were subject to more bites. When I brought this up to Susie, she said she'd bring over some citronella candles and some plug-in thing - but several days went by and I never saw her again. Other notes, the hot water did not work at all. I did not complain about this because I prefer cold showers in hot climates. The very little that Susie talked to me, it was complaining about how much work she has to do. It made me sympathetic to her, so I made little requests for her - in fact I even offered to do most of the cleaning. When I did ask for the sheets to be changed after 6 days of sand she agreed to do it the next day. Yet we never saw her that day. Lastly, the compound is not beautiful or remote or isolated or anything like that. It was ugly compared to most of Carrillo. A walk down the road showed me how much more beautiful it could be. I booked online, sight unseen, for two weeks. Don't do this!!! After several days there it was all but obvious that it was rip off. It is one step up from camping, but at hotel rates. There are lots of places in the area that are not online that you can rent from. We were going to stay out our two weeks anyway, figuring it was a lesson. Despite our love for Playa Carrillo, after constant neglect we decided to leave because of the intense itching my son had from the multiplying bites. I had paid up front for one week (at the weekly rate) and then enough for another 1 1/2 nights. I intended to tell Susie the night before that we had to leave, but again she was not around. We walked to the busstop to return to San Jose at 8am - Susie ran after us and told me I owed her money. When I said I did not, she said I could not have the weekly rate anymore because I was leaving early (despite staying for 8 nights). Then she said she'd call the police on me if I didn't pay for 1/2 day that was supposed to be free in the weekly rate. I am a single mother traveling with kids ages 8 and 9 - and can not pay for two places, yet couldn't stay there.Owner response: What a disastrous review! PLEASE READ OUR OTHER REVIEWS BELOW Our VRBO write-up makes it clear--this is a TREEHOUSE, not a HOTEL. We are offering a unique natural experience. We have NEVER had any complaints of mosquitos, I don't know to what her kids were so susceptible! Two weeks in a small treehouse, with no car to savor some of the wonderful experiences to be had in Costa Rica, sounds like just asking for dissatisfaction. Always be sure you understand ALL the info provided, before booking.

If it adventure you are looking for POPO's treehouse is the perfect please to start from. After an long day of travel We arrived at POPO's to a warm welcoming with a tour of our treehouse and grounds by Tad... Felt right at home instantly! Straight to bed with dreams of sunny beaches in the morning! Early morning wakeup call (Local Roster so no need for an alarm clocks) and off we went to start expolring! Spectaclar! Playa Carrillo!!! What an amazing spot. We had rented a 4x4 and a GPS... turned out to be ideal! Note:If this does not fit your budget the cab service is cheap. My wife and I recieved solid surf lessons and Amy was rideing the waves for the very first time... Thanks Blue Barrel surf school! Tad and Sara accomidated all our requests for local information and set up most of our adventures: SURFING lessons and beach guide, FISHING (we caught 26 fish what a blast), DIVING, SNORKLING and TOURING. They shared tons of loacl information including great spots to visit and eat (the steakhouse just across from the Popo's entrance is to die for! Fantastic local food! We found the POPO's discription of their accomadations and the life style of the Corillo / Samara to be bang on! Read all details prior to booking and I ensure you will not be disapointed. Clean, Rustic and beautiful exotic wood construction! Popo's is a uniquic experiance that i will remember and enjoy for ever... it is definatly on my list of places to return to... Next time my kids are coming as well! We have already recomened this spot to our close friends and family. At $65 an night you can't go wrong! Just a note we headed to the Arenal Volcano and stayed at the Springs Resort for a few days... A the perfect way to finsh off the Honeymoon befor the flight home.(Tad you were so right! Amy loved the hot springs!) Tad and Sara have become friends and I know we will cross plaths again! Thanks for the fantasic experance and recomendations! Our family had the pleasure of staying at Popo's Treehouse over the Christmas vacation and had the greatest experience. I read the one poor review as I went to type in this one and couldn't disagree more. As Popo's description clearly states it is not a 5 star resort so if you are looking for the typical (boring) all inclusive resort vacation then this is not your place! If you are looking for a fun and safe way (as we were) to have a off-the-beaten-track Costa Rican adventure then we highly recommend Popo's! We have two kids (age 9 and 6) and they loved it and will remember this vacation forever. Susie was an amazing host - she included us in family events, lined up tours with the locals, acted as our translator, and made sure we had a wonderful experience. We highly recommend taking a surf lesson from Tad and Susie's wonderful children! We are Canadians with absolutely no experience and they got us all up and surfing like pros (okay "pros" is definitely an exaggeration). We also loved our kayak tour with Tad and Lily. They have amazing knowledge and appreciation for the area and environment. The local beach (5 minute walk) is stunning. We didn't have any problems with bugs. I would recommend to have a car. We didn't have a car the first 5 days of our stay so just walked and took the local bus which worked fine, but driving in that area is very easy and allows you to explore the area. Thanks Tad and Susie for such a wonderful adventure!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, pet owners, sightseeing.

My girlfriend and I were a bit skeptical about booking a "treehouse" in costa rica via VRBO, but decided to give it a shot... Long story short, BEST decision we've made in a long time!!! Tad and Susan and the family are absolutely the kindest people you will ever meet. The treehouses are AWESOME, the people in and around Carrillo are AWESOME, the beaches are AWESOME... starting to notice a trend? The location is pretty central to anywhere you want to go in Costa and the roads getting here are perfect year-round. Susan teaches spanish lessons right there on the property and the kids operate a really nice surf school for everyone from beginners to experts. Carrillo has a few great little restaurants and some fun adventure tours, etc. Samara is just a few miles away and offers a few more options for dining and shopping - but don't take my word for it, do a Saturday night drive down mainstreet Samara on your way to pablitos boca bar/house and see for yourself. We were fortunate enough to have stumbled upon this place and because of it, we now have some new life-long friends, a TON of great pictures and more than a few priceless memories. We can't wait to get back and can't recommend this place highly enough. Ask Tad about the Noni tree out front... he'd love to tell you all about it ;)Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I stayed in the tree house and loved it. While it is rustic, it definitely had all the needed amenities like a clean shower, small refrigerator, good size bedroom, ceiling fan, etc. The highlights of our stay were Yahtzee at sunset on beautiful Playa de Carillo and going to the traditional bull riding festival. Tad was really helpful with ideas in the area, including a great tip on driving to Mal Pais on the beach road (including a few exhilarating river crossings!) We also kayaked with Tad through the river and appreciated all of his knowledge of local wildlife. There are several restaurants on the area, but it was generally a very quiet town. For us, we needed a little bit more of a social scene. But, if you are looking to chill out in a nice Costa Rican beach town, this could work for you!Recommended for: Adventure seekers
Owner response: As of July 2011--there is now a small kitchen in each treehouse, not just a refrigerator.

The treehouses are delightful in their simplicity and very comfortable. You will not believe the sense of life you get around 5:00 a.m., as you awaken surrounded by the sounds of howler monkeys, parrots and other exotic birds in the trees overhead and nearby, mingled with the sounds of roosters and other livestock in the village. This is why you come to Costa Rica!! Even better yet is the chance to meet Tad and his family. They are lovely people, and knowledgable and generous about sharing their love for the village of Carillo and its surrounding natural world. Tad led us on expeditions we could not have attempted on our own, safe for our two children (8 and 5) but helped make us feel the thrill of being explorers. He is also immensely experienced in leading more rigorous expeditions for those so inclined. Don't miss a chance to go adventuring with Tad. We stumbled over this accommodation by chance but will make it the focal point of our visit next time we are in Costa Rica. We will also add some Spanish language instruction at Susie's new language school.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway.

I would definetly recommend Popo's to anyone wanting to experience Costa Rica. The area is a little off the beaten path, but is a beautiful little piece of paradise. If you're used to staying at an all-inclusive resort, you may want to look elsewhere, as it's definetly "rustic". We talked to Tad before we went, and were under no illusions about what we were booking. He's very honest, and knowledgeable about the area, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there and getting to know Tad and his great family as well! One of our hilites (and low lites!) were the resident howler monkeys that came and visited the first 3 days we were there, something we'll never forget. Pretty awesome. Thanks for the hospitality guys!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2
