Taos house description
This home has three bedrooms, two full tiled baths, a large eat in kitchen, living room/dining room, a family room and separate laundry room. It has a big front deck with mountain views and flowering container plants everywhere. The deck is shaded by a big apricot tree, just delightful on a hot afternoon. There is also a back covered portal/patio with table and chairs, BBQ and fireplace and of course more plants. There is ample parking and soon many more surrounding garden spaces. A fun addition is big storage shed which is now 'The bunkhouse' a perfect spot for the young or young at heart.
The home is furnished with my antiques, consignment store and yard sale treasures, original art, folk art pieces and my whimsical style throughout. All bedding, towels, kitchen supplies and appliances are new and inviting.
If all this is not enough, my home is less than a five minute walk through a pleasant old neighborhood to the downtown Plaza area with shops, galleries and restaurants.
This home sleeps 2-6 guests in the three bedrooms. The family room sofa converts into a double bed and the bunkhouse sleeps 2. Soon there will be an additional one bedroom casita ready on the property (separate parking and fenced for privacy) which will sleep two. A truly perfect getaway for 2- 12 guests!
GREAT/FUN NEWS FLASH!!! This house and the little Casita Juliet (Vrbo 490376)on the property have been chosen to be on The Taos Home & Garden Tour this coming summer! From Foreclosure to Tour material is quite a compliment and very exciting!!! So often Tour homes, while often quite lovely have that 'professional designer' look. The architect is there, the Builder, the Landscaper and all the owner knows is that they wrote a lot of checks to make this happen. Believe me, I know ALL about these houses since I performed all above roles as well as laborer and general schlepper... My style, my time and now 800 people can see what I do!

Perfect home away from home
Perfect home away from home
In reviewing Casa Madre , I must start with Melissa ! She is an absolute gem and before we arrived in Taos , I felt like I was going to visit an old friend. Our family has stayed in many VRBO homes but I have never had a homeowner take care of us the way Melissa did ! She has thought of every amenity that one could possibly need to make your stay enjoyable and stress- free. Not only is the kitchen well stocked with dishes and cookware but with staples like coffee, teas, spices , snacks , even butter , and salad dressing were in the refrigerator ! Casa Madre truly has the feel that you have walked into a home , tenderly prepared by mother for your arrival . The home comfortably accommodated our family of 9 , including my 85 year old mother . The beds were very comfortable and attractively appointed with linens. We spent most of our time on the front porch amongst the hanging baskets filled with beautiful flowers. Casa Madre is located on a quiet street where you feel very safe and secluded . It took us about 9 minutes to walk to town . Everywhere you look , you find something interesting and fun amongst the eclectic furnishings and art work . Melissa's labor of love is evident in every room and corner. I highly recommend Casa Madre and with the nearby casita nearly completed , the property can accommodate a very large family and each couple their privacy and space. It was our first visit to Taos but we are looking forward to a return visit to Casa Madre.

Owner response: Sallie, thanks SO much for your wonderful review! I am so glad you chose Casa Madre for your family celebration in Taos. You were my first big group to stay there. It is a wonderful house and nice to know you were happy and comfortable there. My first guests were a couple who stayed for three weeks and loved the space and privacy. You were a group of nine and loved the same thing! I do pat myself on the back just a bit when I realize howI saw the potential of this home that had been in foreclosure for two years, bought it in February and had it all done and ready for guests by June! This is what I love to do and will send you photos of the little Casita Juliet on the property which should be done this week. So nice too to meet your lovely family and I'm glad all my Taos suggestions added to the enjoyment of your visit. Melissa

My first guests--a love note in my guestbook
We came from different states and cities and gathered in Taos to celebrate friendship, music and food in this wonderful little town. Our celebration crew were the "Guinea Pigs" for Melissa's new vacation rental Casa Madre. We initiated your house with good food, wine, dance and laughter! What a beautiful space filled with treasures and art that delighted our senses! Melissa, you did an incredible job- always paying attention to detail and filling your spaces with love and joy! We are all cooks and your kitchen was beyond perfect! The decor was perfect and beds so comfortable. Thank you SO much for allowing us to be the first to share your wonderful home! We'll be back!

Great house; Great location; Great art
Great house; Great location; Great art
We had the pleasure of a three week stay in this lovely home. We could not have been happier. It was roomy and “as advertised” there really was nothing missing. The beautiful plants on both front deck and back portal made both locations perfect for mornings or evenings enjoying the amazing Taos atmosphere. The street is quiet and super convenient whether going to the north or south ends of town. The kitchen is large and well equipped – the perfect size for a larger family or group. Plenty of seating for all in the living room and family room. The bunk house will be an instant hit with kids – so cool. The antiques and art are everywhere and totally fascinating. After three weeks, we were STILL finding more treasures. The owner is charming, genuine and honest. Everything promised was delivered and more.

About the owner: Some women collect shoes. Some collect husbands. I seem to collect houses! I am the VRBO Queen of Taos with two homes, a downtown apartment and now another house and soon (within the month) a little casita for guests. I so enjoy buying old adobes, remodeling and reviving and then furnishing them and renting them to visitors. My houses are always booked and I get great reviews. I am a busy Taos woman. Aside from my vacation rentals, I own a fun, eclectic downtown shop called Red Cat Melissiana. The name is a combination of my red cat Nellie and my name. Melissiana is a made up word and means 'anything I want since it's my shop'. I have unique gifts, flowers and lingerie in a wonderful old adobe building with great history on a street known as 'The Garden Street of Taos' planted of course by me. I am active in my community, on two board of directors and certainly never have a bored moment. I moved to Taos 8 years ago from the San Francisco Bay area after raising my three children as a successful landscaper. I wanted a small town with lots to do, real mountains and four seasons. I got all this and more. I can't imagine living anywhere else and love sharing my town with my guests.
Why the Owner Chose Taos:
I've known this home for years. A friend of mine owned it and I often went to garage sales at the house. It had a nice feel to it and I liked the location. It went into foreclosure two years ago and I honestly forgot about it. I had enough else going on. A real estate friend of mine mentioned it to me and we went to see it. I immediately saw the incredible potential as a wonderful vacation rental, but no longer had my 'California money or California mentality' My mom is 96 and talked about wanting to do something for me while she was still alive to enjoy it. She wrote a check and I had another house. I bought it in March and it was quite the challenge, but 4 months later I have an amazing showcase vacation rental! Thanks mom! I've named it 'Casa Madre' for you!!!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
This home has a wonderful feeling to it. Ok, part of it is my style and taste I know, but it is inviting and friendly with a spacious, yet cozy feeling. Floors are wood or mexican tile, there are lots of windows and it has a welcoming feel. The house is constructed of 'cross ties' which are railroad ties, but not treated with creosote so the walls are thick and it is cool on the warmest days. I splurged on two gas log stoves for that fireplace feel without the firewood chore. All rooms now have heat. It must have been quite chilly in the past, but will now be warm in the winter. The house has a nice layout and will be comfortable for one to three couples in the three bedrooms. The neighborhood is great. Nice homes, peaceful and quiet. Birdsong in the day, crickets at night and occasionally the intriguing sound of someone's peacock! (A peacock in Taos? I swear it is...) There are two homes on the property, but each have their own parking area, are separated by gardens and a fence so everyone maintains a sense of privscy. The property is completely fenced and I am a dog friendly lady who knows how many folks travel with their pet. This is a very special home and I am proud to offer it as a vacation rental.
